How to convert fiber to ethernet using an optical fiber. In this video I introduce a pair of devices that convert electrical cable signals to fiber optic signals. It helps you to extend the network to distant points that electrical signal cables cannot meet. The feature of this pair of converters is that only one measles is used

Error. Do not insert the SC / APC adapter into the converter with the SC / PC socket. The green color is the SC / APC adapter. At 100 meters it will work, but at 10 kilometers it may not work anymore. And the equipment is for 25 kilometers.

APC has a angled cut and a green plug. UPC has the blue plug and a straight cut. The green connector is often used with fiber to the home. The blue connector is used for indoor fiber optic connections.

@@LoganAddisMusic Those sockets on the media converter are intended to receive an SC connector and a PC ferrule end he uses SC/APC on one side (Denoted by the green plug) this is wrong. Inside the cable is the fibre line otherwise known as a core, to protect the end of this core it sits inside of a ceramic sheath known as a ferrule, this part goes into the media converter (It's the white piece sticking out the end of the cable) this can have a different finish on it and is denoted by a colour on the connector, when you put this inside of a socket you have to ensure you use a socket which is compatible with that ferrule as it won't extrude the fibre optic cable correctly into the socket and can even damage the ferrule and the core, in any case there will be an air gap as a result where the ends of the fibre don't line up and that can cause signal degradation. Note UPC and PC are compatible so one end of the cable is correct. Hope that explains it 👍

Hi thanks for posting this, very useful. I've got this same fibre optic cable. It goes into a little LAN box device (not sure what it is, but says LAN on it) and then this LAN box connects to my router via ethernet cable acting as a bridge. When there is a thunderstorm, of course I will disconnect the ethernet from the 'LAN box' to prevent damage to the router, but do I have to disconnect the fibre optic cable to prevent damage to the 'LAN box', or should I not worry about that? And yes, of course all plugs out of sockets (receptacles as you say :D)

  • @s2000.

    @s2000.

    3 жыл бұрын

You don't need to disconnect anything, because electricity (lightning strike) cannot be transmitted over the fiber optic cable. Only light can travel via the fiber optic cable. Plugs out of the socket is enough for both the router and modem (the lan box thing you are talking about is a fiber optic modem). The fiber optic cables are very fragile so I wouldn't recommend disconnecting them.

@Positron In my Country nobody uses "non a" cables, i guess you are from North America. If you want to be future proof you should use cat 7a or cat 8. Cat 7a cables are the same price as household OM2 cables. But if you want to go 10G fiber is less expensive then 10G RJ45 switch are like 500+€ and 100+€ for Networking cards. With fiber you have less expensive sfp/sfp+ switches with tranceivers and cheap sfp+ networking cards. You could go 10G with RJ45 using a sfp+ tranceiver but then you pay a premium for the RJ45-SFP+ Tranceivers and should switch to fiber

Just check for the Plug and fibertype. Then you can pretty much choose any cable (OM1,OM2,OM3,OM4,OS1,OS2) But for higher speeds (>10Gb/s) You should choose anything above OM2

Well, SC-APC is usually used in video applications where small reflection is required. The major difference between SC-APC/UPC connectors is the polishing style: APC is angled whereas UPC is flat. Therefore you cannot mix and match these connector types because it will introduce loss and reflection and also in worst case you will destroy the connector. Read into this good summary for more details: www.fiber-optic-cable-sale.com/fiber-connector-type-sc-apc-vs-sc-upc.html

A believe that a fiber jumper was used just for demonstration purposes, to show how it works. The practical use for this is to extend a network beyond the range of cat5/cat6 using a long run of fiber between the convertors. Cat5/6 the maximum run cannot exceed 100 meters or 328 feet. This includes the cable run plus patch cables. Single mode fiber can be run up to around 200 KM' (about 125 miles!). It's primarily a function of increased distance without diminished speeds or signal degradation.

Recently i applied for bsnl FTTH (they provide only connection and we have to buy the router). As in amazon/market prices, the GPON/EPON ONT routers are too bit costly to purchase though they have less specs. I still didn't buy the SYROTECH GPON ONT ROUTER so, my queston is... can i connect the optic cable directly to the media converter and convert this optic signal to LAN RJ45.From that converted LAN cable, can we able to connect other routers like TPLINK which supports LAN RJ 45. pls... I need some answers really need to save some bucks

this is sc/upc mediaconverters, you have wrong cable, should use sc/upc to sc/upc = blue to blue connectors, thats 90 dagree cut, using this green connector (sc/apc) can demage the port and also have lower dBi count, thats poor transmition. Another thing its only base100tx/rx thats 100 mbit speed. If anybody wants to use something like that, better to thing about buy two tplinks mc220l, two sfp conwerters 1.25g 3km one should be 1310 another 1550 and use only blue to blue cable, another thing there is single mode fieber, on market we can buy mm (multimode fieber) always watch beceose the mm cable dont work with sm converters. I know this video is from 2018 but my friend send me this with question is this is good choice. Have nice day.

You seem to know about this... I want to share the internet between building that are 150 Mt , 500 ft apart of each other... Can I use something like this? I can't use wifi bridge because there are a lot of threes and stuff between the line of sight ... Can you help me?

  • @KukiDot

@@ijiopu Yes, of course you can, the most important thing is that you buy a set of media converters that will be marked, one 1550, another 1310, these are wave transmitting beams for transmission, there cannot be two the same media converters because it will not work, it is about rx-tx transmission, a lot of translation , it's best to read about it yourself, there are many types of mediaconverters, let's start by discussing the fact that they are single-mode and multi-mode, i.e. SM and MM, I recommend SM because they are cheaper, longer distances and a cheaper cable for them, i.e. single-mode media converter, then it is worth paying attention to the fact that they have inputs, SC-APC, SC-UPC, LC-APC, LC-UPC or simply SFP port, for media converters with SFP port you have to buy inserts separately, the selection of which applies to the same compatibility, type of plug, etc. SC- UPC / APC are plugs with green or blue tips, it is important to choose the color of the plug in the media converter, the most common are blue, i.e. large plugs, i.e. SC-UPC, they are cut off by 90 degrees. You need to buy a suitable cable for this, preferably with such a plug at both ends, i.e. 200 meters single-mode SC-UPC to SC-UPC fiber optic patch cord. Also pay attention to whether the mediaconverter is simplex or duplex, simplex requires only a single cable, duplex already two alternately crossed. There is a possibility of wireless transmission despite trees, the solution is the purchase of Mikrotik SXT which operate in the 2.4 GHz band, the standard band we currently encounter is 5 GHz, it cannot cope with obstacles, in addition, the windows themselves suppress radio signals very much, so you should install such radio outside. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a private message or to my email admin@phxn.net

  • @KukiDot

In addition, you have a detailed description on media converters or SFP inserts, it is worth paying attention to whether they are 100 mbit or 1.25 g (gigabit), in addition, the range to which the transmission will be transmitted, 100m, 500m, 1km, 5km, 20km, 40km etc. In your case, you need to buy inserts / media converters that will operate above 100m but not more than 40km because below 100m the transmission will not pass, above 40km they will heat up and eventually burn due to too strong signal, it is worth being careful when choosing not to buy more than you need it.

@@rosseitto One option is to buy media converters with an SFP port, then buy an SFP module for the SC/APC cable, or just buy media converters with SC/UPC ports and a SC/UPC > SC/APC patchcord, I have not seen a media converter with a SC/APC module, but we always deal with SC/UPC to SC/APC patch cord

  • @KukiDot

@@rosseitto Today I checked the configuration in the work for you, SC/UPC > SC/APC plugged into an adapter with a SC/APC pigtail, welded to a 400m fiber optic cable, terminated with a SC/APC pigtail in the adapter, then in a SC/APC > SC/UPC patchcord. The OTDR shows me 0.18db then on adapter 0.08db, splice 0.11db, cable 0.03db, splice 0.09db, adapter 0.12db and termination 0.13db. In total, the entire route is 0.74db, sometimes we have such values on one connector or sometimes routers attenuate 3dbi. Pigtails and patchcords from medium, OTDR EXFO reflectometer and Fujikura 90s welder. If I find a moment tomorrow I will present it on my channel and tag you in the video how it should look like.
