About the test:
3 years ago we did a review with the Toyota RAV4. Back then it was an impressive car capable of doing excellent terrain work as well as being a good drive on asphalt. And now there is big news for the car: its here as a hybrid. And this hybrid also comes with a CVT-transmission. And for anyone who has ever driven in the terrain it comes as no surprise that that combination performs outstanding under rough circumstances. No struggling with a clutch pedal and the wrong gear, that is completely taken over by the car. Aside from good handling on muddy and other slippery surfaces it can also tow in excess of 1.600 kilograms; that’s quite unique for a hybrid car. Other changes made are an updated exterior for the 2016 model including new headlamps and rear lights alongside a lot of new safety features with Toyotas Safety Sense package. It combines several safety features that are standard on the car and raise its safety to a high level, who doesn’t want that? On the inside the changes are quite minimal and include some practical improvements and materials now have a higher quality-feel. With a 2.5 litre engine and 2 electric motors it has quite some power: total output is 197 hp. With an output just shy of 200 hp it is also the most powerful version on sale (in the Netherlands). We take a look to see what ‘hybrid’ means for the new RAV4.

    Great detailed review - also different to other reviews with some interesting camera work. Appreciate the English subtitles too. Based on this review and a couple of others I had a test drive of the 2WD version and... ordered a new MY17 version!!! By the way, could I ask what the intro music is please? Thanks again.

    I’m expecting a new redesign 5th generation RAV4 2019 or RAV4 2020 will be a bit sportier and more aggressive, more eco, bigger, nicer, safer, stronger, and higher than this 4th generation . The front of the vehicle shall be semi- AUDI Q8 2018, and the rear of the vehicle shall be semi- BMW X7 2018 .

    Dumb question: if you are cruising at constant speed, and you suddenly lift your right foot from the accelerator pedal, does the car behaves like a free-wheeling vehicle or does the regen phase begin (you feel some sort of braking)?

    I don't have a good answer to that question, it is a very technical issue. It can be that it slows the car a bit down through the CVT also. But there are regenerative braking systems that slow the car down. For example the BMW i3 that brakes when you lift your foot off the throttle so that it can catch more energy.
