I think it is nice looking when I first saw that model of Prius in a book at elementary school I was amazed at how good looking it was especially for 1995

i owned a 2003. rode about as well as a camry of the same year, namely absorbent of cratered pavement and generally smooth and level enough over all the roads i drove it over, even railroad crossings with naked tracks. acceleration from a stop was glacial for about two seconds until the engine kicked in with gus. wind noise was nicely suppressed, adding to the electric calm. skinny tires led to occasional squeal on winding freeway ramps. traction in the rain was undistinguished. standard radio had good reception in general but subpar sound due to tiny speakers in doors, no guts [no bass] from it. front seats flat and unsupportive, lacked adjustment for height and tilt and lumbar. needed better seats, definitely. for this 6'3" driver, legroom and headroom were barely adequate. backseat was surprisingly comfy and roomy, though, with the front seats advanced. engine a bit rough and vocal whenever it piped up which in contrast to the electric calm was a bit galling. that and the road noise over coarse pavement needed additional NVH work. hadda sell it when my insurance guy majorly increased my premiums, explaining this auto's low threshold for totaling in any serious accident.

@Robert James you were fortunate to get one with better speakers, the ones in mine crackled at high volume and had no bass below 60 hz.

@@BruceTheSillyGoose I have a 2002 and I disagree with your comment on the acceleration. The engine kicks in absolutely instantly, and there's quite a lot of torque off the line. 0-25 is very quick and then it tapers off. 0.60 is about 12 seconds, but 0-30 is only 4 seconds.

@@BruceTheSillyGoose You must have had a weak battery. I've had about 20 of these cars, and its funny how each one is a little different. In both accel and particularly braking. Some want to throw you through the windshield when hit the brakes needing some time to get use to them, others not like that. Still have 3 right now. The cat thieves are taking them all off the road the last few years, when replacements are $2000, a lot for a 20 year old car.

@@nikolanikola8543 It's a little bit outdated these days with the Camry hybrid's combined average being 2% better than the Prius. The Prius was certainly a great first step, but it just isn't relevant anymore. The (currently) 10% higher MSRP of the Camry can easily be overcome by getting a very lightly-used version, so even including the cost difference doesn't give the Prius much standing anymore outside of those that outright want a hatchback function and/or Prius enthusiasts. Either of those are valid, I'm simply stating the Prius isn't the "default option" for people who want ≥50 mpg anymore.

That's awesome, I'm just looking at one to buy now from 2001. I currently drive a 2009 (58 plate) Toyota Avensis tourer 2.0D-D T4, which is on 193k and drives lovely still, but rising costs are driving me towards alternative solutions for getting around. Is there anything I should look for if I road test the one I'm considering? 🧐
