Just got around to doing my repair, 2009 sienna, after ordering the replacement part 2 months ago. Everything works now, thank you. A handful of things not called out in the video - you'll need a 10mm socket and a T15 & T20 for the various screws. There's a decent amount of that white sealant holding the mirror to the mount as well, so keep that in mind. As far as the door panel, there's actually a ton of clips in there and what worked for me was just gently prying the top portion back. That gave enough room to disconnect the nuts holding the mirror to the door and access the wire coupling underneath. There's 2 indents in the door frame you can use as leverage to get the top of the door panel back on. Its worth saying, lower the window fully on the door you're working with.

Wow! Thanks so much for your clear and detailed video! I repaired the mirror on a 2008 Sienna using your excellent instructions! It took me 2 1/2 hours using your video! A helpful trick is to lay out a strip of broad masking tape sticky side up, with the ends rolled under to hold the strip in place on the work area. As you take the screws out, place them in a line on the strip of tape. It is very easy to reassemble a complex item if you know what order the screws were taken out in and have that order maintained with the tape. Great video and thanks a lot!

I bought the metal replacement gear offered online. I was able to replace the plastic gear that was split in half. When I first mounted it back onto the door and tried it, it didn't operate at all.....no motor sound whether the button was in the "in" or "out" position. It was then that I realized that the black shaft coupling between the fold-motor and the prime worm-gear shaft probably did not mesh up correctly, thus causing the moter to bind up. While the mirror housing was still attached, i used a screwdriver to partially lift up the motor housing and then tried cycling the fold-in/fold-out button while lifting the motor housing top up about 1/4 inch above the main gear/ motor housing. The motor began to operate a little, then it caught and began to work normally. I pushed the motor housing top back down on the main motor/gear housing and everything was cool. Thank You for putting this video up and for selling the gear to repair this Toyota shortcoming!!

I think I have the same problem like you in a Toyota Vitz 2011. My right mirror is not adjusting or folding via the motor. Only manually. Why is it so hard to find a replacement genuine mirror? And this mechanism is a bit overcomplicated I think.

I am NOT mechanically-inclined & I am SO thrilled that this worked, even for me. Joseph Wu, your gear arrived in 6 days & your video instruction was almost good enough by itself. My 2006 Sienna mirror works like new now in 2023, nothing rattles, and my self-confidence got a boost. Also: I briefly needed another person to hold/push a couple things. Also: It turns out I needed to loosen the entire inner door panel in order to re-install it so that the top ridge could fit over that long strip of steel (I needed another video for that). Then it all came together perfectly. Also: Pay attn. to the comments that tell you which star bits you'll need - 2 of them. Thanks Joseph!

Just replaced mine on the 2010 Sienna Limited driver's side. Took 4 hours. Great video. I hope I don't have to replace the other side. Mine stopped working and the folding motor in the mirror would turn on randomly occasionally. Then it turned on and would not go off for anything. Now it folds and no motor noise. I had to buy door panel tools to get the clips unfastened and to put the door panel back on.

Life Saver! I ordered these a couple of weeks ago for a 2010 Sienna that has had the power folding mirrors flopping in the wind for 5+ years. I was ready to order complete manual folding replacements when I came across this video. Both sides had the plastic gear split in half but after about 90 minutes of repair they work again! Thank you for taking the time to offer the video and metal gear!

I don’t care for the mirror function, just need a mirror. If the wiring is not connected would it have any issue with anything about the car? @@jackkruschev3925 hmmm maybe the turn signals might not work. Since the blinkers are built into the mirror. Also rear defrosters might not work since mirrors are heated.

Great video and fix. The only thing I would add is when taking off the door panel, you have to pull out the sides and bottom first and then you lift it up. Thanks for the part and video.

Thanks for posting this. Used the part to fix a 2009 Toyota Sienna XLE however it took me three tries. Here's what to lookout for: 1. Consider removing the mirror assembly when the mirror housing is still attached to the car (there are a couple of videos on KZread). My mirror broke as I removed it. 2. When pulling apart the motor housing, ensure the electric motor stays attached to the upper part of the housing. In my first attempt, the motor came loose and lost contact with the two metal clips which provide power. 3. Ensure the vertically mounted screw stays in place. I took mine out to fit the new gear wheel and ended up putting it back in upside down. The vertical screw has one end that is rounded (which should be mounted down) and one end that is flat (which should be mounted up). After the third try, the mirror retracted as shown.

I cracked mine too. It's not as easy as the video shows. There is glue on the bottom and when you apply a bit of force to unclip it, the mirror cracks and leaks the liquid in the mirror. Where do you find a cheap replacement with a signal and heated? My motor is not spinning too. probably the contact pins are not connecting. Also, taking out the panel is challenging if you don't have a pry tool. Take the side and bottom clips first before pushing up.

Thanks again for this. I just did both mirrors on my 2006. A couple extras I might throw in while the door panel is off. 1- Replace all damaged or even slightly loose panel fasteners. They’re cheap on Amazon. I used hot glue to secure the foam blocks that were secured but loose and rattle. Used hot glue to re-attach the pillowy insulation things that were partially detached. Re-taped the wire harness to the panel with new Gorilla duct tape as the original clear tape had all detached. Any wire bundles with the electrical tape falling off, I re-wrap with rubber electrical tape. It will never come undone or leave sticky residue. Lastly, you may want to replace the puddle lamp with an LED bulb while it’s open and easy to do. All this to make sure nothing in the panel moves and rattles.

Those are great thoughts…. I would go with Toyota factory panel fasteners. The ones are amazon don’t last in the heat and are way cheaper. Also hot glue should not be used for automotive applications. The car heats up too hot in the sun and hot glue melts. So I like to use RTV for sealing engine gaskets. But there might be something better. RTV cannot be exposed to UV light so use appropriately. But awesome advice. Its a great car! Mine is close to 300k miles.

2006 limited XLT. Drivers was bad. Passengers was fine. Whomever disabled the motor previously cut the purple wire in the wire bundle just outside the rubber gasket. So had to repair that with spade connectors. But other wise the gear replacement went flawlessly. Very happy. I do notice that the drivers mirror folds slower by maybe a second. But whatever. It works.

What I missed is I assume, especially with a metal gear, there is a tooth alignment that's a critical match up so that the mirror swings out and back in without trying to go to far? Also any suggestions on where I order the replacement gear?

Use the land cruiser link. They share the same gear for certain years. Best thing to do is open it up first and count the number of teeth on the broken gear and/or send a photo to me.

Any tips if you don't even hear the motor running? Is there a fuse to check? I had the mirror closed and when iI tried to open it one side opened and the other didn't. I tried to push it back open and it went back around 95% and it's loose now. It's for a 2008 Toyota Sequioa. The driver's side opens and closes with no issues. Thanks

The sequoias have a problem where the base of the motor breaks and causes it to free spin. Only way is to disassemble it and check. Usually not the gear.

Broke the Mirror....grrrrr.......The video made it look real easy to remove the glass mirror. There is strong double sided tape adhesive on the back of the mirror. I pulled as gently as I could but the glass cracked and some sort of fluid came out of the mirror part.

You need to pull the plastic part. Not the glass itself. The plastic part clips into the mechanism and it releases from the bottom

Thanks for the video, do you know if any of the gears you supply would fit a 2010 Alphard? Its a jap import. Mine did work intermitantly but now makes no sound. And a bit loose compared to the other mirror. Cheers

I just cleaned the gear very well, scratched up the sides thoroughly, and filled both side with JB Weld. Time will tell how well this lasts.

Good luck. I already tried the glue thing. Its a very high torque gear. And should of been made with metal to begin with. This metal gear is a good solution for a bad design though

My 2007 sienna on driver’s side, the plastic gear cracked 8 years ago, I used metal washers super glue both sides of the plastic gear until now there is no problem. Today (2023/8/30)the plastic gear on the passenger’s side is also cracked..I used metal washers and glue on both sides of the plastic gear. It's easy to fix and saves money.

Inflation and suppy issues

'09 Sienna passenger side mirror stopped folding (drivers side works great), but NO sound when button is pressed. I tried to maneuver the mirror manually and heard something break. Now the mirror is loose. Since I don't hear the motor on that side, is the motor broken? If so, where can I get a new motor?

The motor runs silent…. Its the gear that you need.

You have to remove the black cable that runs thru the hole. There is bracket holding the wire in the base of the mirror unit behind the rubber gasket.

My mirror got bumped and now extends beyond 90o. It does retract though. Is their a limiting stop that is broken?

The bottom of the mirror has a spring loaded bracket. It usually gives and you can just turn it back. But this is different than the motor gear.

This is a different problem. The base unit has a broken mount. You can take it apart and try to glue it back together

For 20 bucks more than what the gear is listed for, you could just buy the new heated mirror assembly. I could see this making sense if the gear were 2 dollars, but not at nearly the same price as the entire premium unit.

But the new unit is cheap aftermarket. It shakes when you drive down the road. Also it does not have power folding. The genuine Toyota mirror is over $800.

Hi, we ordered and replaced the driver's side mirror with the metal gear and now the passenger and driver's side fold in when the button is pressed but the passenger doesn't fold back out. Is something out of sync or do you think the passenger side is partially cracked?

My mirror's motors suffered extensive damage and I was inspired by this video to get a salvage mirror assembly albeit in a different color and swap the mechanisms. Unfortunately, I now see that the harness goes through what appears to be motor to fold the mirror and the connectors at both ends are too large to pass through the cylindrical opening in the center of that motor @DebtFreeCars, any suggestions?

What year and model of car? You can disconnect the other end of the wire harness to get it through the motor unit. But honestly extensive work like this is difficult because the item has been baking in the hot sun and all plastic parts are pretty crisp and easily broken. Soo…

@@DebtFreeCars Which end were you thinking would allow the housing to be separated? The vehicle is a 2006 Toyota Sienna Limited MCL20L-PFAQKA and the salvage mirror is from a 2007 and not in bad shape. The 18 pin connector on the door side seems too large to go through the passage and at least one of the connectors on the other side seem to large to go through the motor. I'm going to try and just swap the subassembly that tilts the mirror.

@@DebtFreeCars After further inspection, I realized that the older folding motor was still working and that the mirror adjusting subassembly could be separated from the former. I was therefore able to swap the mirror adjusting part and now have a fully working unit! I will still buy one of those pin release tools and try it out on the parts I still have, for science :-) Thanks

I bought the metal replacement gear and installed it last fall, but the folding mechanism still wouldn't work. It stopped the grinding sound, but the housing flopped fore and aft. Then it got too cold to try it again for the year. A couple of weeks ago, the whirring sound started again, though weakly, and it got warm enough today to take everything apart. The replacement gear is still intact, and everything looks like it's supposed to, but upon putting everything back together, it's exactly like it was when we put it back together last year, except now it's not whirring/grinding again. Still flopping. I'm stymied. Any ideas? Could the folding mechanism motor be too weak after a couple years of it grinding and it's just too weak to actuate now? But then why the flop? Ugh.

I think your mirror was damaged by an impact. Someone must of hit it and broke the base. I don’t think it’s the gear.

This happened to me at first. Took the whole thing apart three times. Finally I noticed that if I manually folded the mirror all the way closed, it would click and lock in place. Then it started working.

Motor could be bad/weak

I just bought a Sienna limited and I have this problem on my passenger side, the signal light doesn’t work. It says in the out position but doesn’t move at all. Is this what I need to fix it, I was wondering if I needed the entire motor or the gear is fine?

What year is your Sienna? Is it the same model as the video? What happens when you push the folding button? If one mirror folds but the other makes clicking noise, then this is the fix. However, if your mirror does not fold or is loose. Other issues may cause it. Without knowing the previous owners history it’s hard to determine without opening up the mirror. The previous owner might have modified it or tried to keep it from folding... feel free to reply back when you remove the mirror.

Also the turn signal issue is prob just a broken wire connector. When you take off the mirror glass part you can check if it’s still connected.

What is it when you do all of this and the gear is fine? Bought the gears, took it all apart only to find the gear was in perfect shape. Mirrors flip around. Will not fold but they do move. Will not lock in place.

Thanks for posting. Quick question on a 2010 Sequoia-when I press the fold button, the passenger side mirror folds without issue, the drivers side does nothing as if its not getting power. I'm assuming a mirror with a cracked gear like yours would try to fold, but grind indicating the cracked gear. Is that correct? Any ideas on what the issue may be before I go tearing into this thing?

When you move the mirror with your hand. Is it loose? If so most likely a cracked gear. What’s the history on the car? You owned since new? Someone might of disconnect the power? See if the turn signals work? If the heating element work, etc. does it tilt left right? Up down?

My ls460 passenger side just stop working doesn't click or anything driver side works as should are there fuses for these?

@@nova_squad_bossx1818 not sure but both sides should work off one one switch and one circuit. Some most likely bad motor.

$59 for a metal gear. What a rip-off. Should be less than $10. Seriously 😮
