Toyota Pickup / 4Runner Front Brakes & Wheel Bearing Replacement How To!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to replace the front brake rotors, pads, and wheel bearings on a Toyota Pickup and 4Runner from this generation.
There are some slight variations in this job depending on your vehicle (e.g. 4x4 vs 2WD, pre-86/post-86) but the process is similar - see the torque specs below.
Important note! If you have a 4x4 vehicle, you will need the special 54mm lock nut socket to do this job.
Torque Specs:
Brake caliper-to-steering knuckle:
1983 and earlier 2WD, '84 and earlier 4WD.................. 68-86 ft/lbs
1984 to '85 4WD............................................................. 55-75 ft/lbs
1986 and later 4WD........................................................ 90 ft/lbs
Brake caliper-to-torque plate:

1989 and later 2WD......................................................... 47 ft/lbs
1989 and later 4WD......................................................... 90 ft/lbs
Torque plate-to-steering knuckle:

Watched/read about 8 other tutorials on this process before starting and this was the FIRST one to mention the 2WD has the 30mm nut instead of the 54mm...and then comprehensive torque specs in the description?!?! Well done! Cannot thank you enough for finally making that very important distinction. As someone who makes automotive installation videos for a living your thoroughness does not go unnoticed!

By far the most helpful tutorial for Toyota pickup/4runner brakes. I'm doing this job today and I love how clear your instructions and camera angles are. Thanks for the tutorial!

You do a good job with all the details in the description and on video, but you leave out one key thing that is very necessary for noobs who like to read the description before watching the video: "Car Model/Version Shown." You don't "type" if you are working on a 2WD or a 4X4.

Great video! The only thing I would like to comment on is how you put grease in the bearings. You should palm the grease and press the edge of the bearing in the grease so it goes thru the bearing grooves. If you just do it on the outside and try to rub it in the bearing does not have enough grease or any at all where it should be. Or you can use a bearing tool that properly greases the bearing. Other then that your video is the best out of all the rest.

All in all good video, only issue is that is not how to pack a bearing. You cup the bearing into your other hand with grease between the inner outer cage till grease comes through the rollers. This fills the bearing from the inside to out. I imagine you only got a few thousand miles on that bearing.

Thank you for the advice - I did pack more grease into the bearing off camera, but you are right, the correct was to do it is the way you described or with a bearing packer. I've put about 5k miles on the truck since and the bearing are still running smoothly, but I may pull them off again in the future to re-do the job. Thanks again!

That's the first thing I noticed. He didn't use the widely accepted method of packing a bearing. but I think that won't impact longevity much. He seemed to do an ok job of packing the grease in there. I wouldn't redo the job. Leave it as is.

I like to use a stick to hold the brake pedal down. Makes it a hell of a lot easier breaking those 14 mm bolts loose on the hub if you don't have the use of an impact handy
