I can not believe they have a hatch at the rear, the split tail gate of the 100's and 200's was one of their best features. Big step backwards IMO.

Toyota can reinforce its structure with light high tensile carbon fiber, but at what cost? is it repairable in every corner of the world? Many people said that LC is overpriced already. Split gate can't use the usual alloy and aluminium because you will sit on it. Toyota knows it. any idea?

Great review mate. Best one out there. Good to see that Toyota have used significant Australian input into the design process and haven’t messed too much with a winning formula. Smaller fuel tank is a backward step. Carrying capacity is still terrible though. With 7 passengers on board and a piddly amount of luggage, you would exceed the load limit. Further deduct a Bullbar, towbar, roof rack, long range tank and the ball weight of the van you’re pulling and you’re overweight before you even pack anything. Something needs to change in Australia’s weight limit allowances because most people who will use these things for what they’re designed for, will technically be illegal and uninsured because they’re too heavy. The footage of the van being towed, assuming a 10% ball weight (290kg), plus the weight of the towbar itself, leaves an effective carrying capacity of under 300kg, before passengers! This is not a Toyota problem, but still needs pointing out. The GR Sports KDSS and double diff locks need to be offered as an optional package for the GX or GXL version, because most people who are really going to put their car through the wringer off road, don’t want to be paying for a sunroof etc. Great to see the off road ability actually improve compared to its predecessor. Will be interesting to see how that hot-v engine design engine holds up to running at max load in hot temperatures. If it does, then they’ve done well to coax so much grunt from that size engine.

When I was asked what I would like in a new Cruiser, I asked for (1) 8 Cylinders twin turbo diesel, say up to 5 litres capacity; (2) 800nm torque and (3) 4000kg towing capacity. Zero out of three for me means my 200 Series will be working for me for a very long time.

The base GX spec 300 Series has some features which makes it nicer than 200 Series GXL - leather wrapped steering wheel, automatic dipping headlights, radar cruise control, electronic park brake, power folding mirrors, lane keep assist (although this feature seems to be universally unliked). The significant key differentiators like more power/torque/gears is a huge plus, as well as the 17" diameter wheels. However the somewhat cramped interior, unnecessary hump on the floor and curiously narrow cargo bay area are unexpected detractors. It's got the same wheel base as the 200 Series, so where exactly did all that volume of space disappear to? No doubt Toyota will use this same TNG-A platform for the next Prado, so I think it means that there is hope the next gen Prado will be good buying as it will likely have near identical interior space, but at a more affordable price point.

You can't plug a hair dryer into the 100W - 240VAC Outlet in the back. Hair Dryers usually require at least 2000W.

When describing the vehicle dimensions you say “bigger is not always better.” If you guys at Chasing cars actually believe that why to you give points to vehicles, namely SUV’s pushing their size outside of their class? A good example is probably the medium class SUV’s, those things are seriously big. Look at the Tucson and RAV4 pushing into large. You are right, not everyone wants bigger. Great review of the 300 btw !

It’s a fair question. The reason is we have to take size into account with all the other factors that make a car good or bad.

Good overall review, the GR look certainly has changed my initial thoughts on the 300 and if they did a base version looking blacked out even if more plastic with more mechanical rather than electronic aids vinyl interior, washable etc throughout and a split rear door like the 80s had, Id consider it, but 140k Id rather buy the base VX strip it back do the AFM replacement build my own GR. Way I’d go anyways. Though the Sway bar disconnects tech is cool, I’d just be concerned with long term reliability of all that electronic wizardry, never getting rid of the 80 but this def is looking more interesting, just feel they missed an opportunity with a real mechanical base variant. Like the LT (Troopy) vs the LX ( 5 seater) in the 70 series. GR did look good off road how it was so composed, don’t doubt it will be a hit, a home run would have been even better. Cheers 🤘

My stock 4runner has a better approach and departure angle and higher clearance. Now that I have upgraded it with 3 inch lift and bigger tire, it can do even more. Of course power to weight ratio, land cruiser will kill it. But for $37K it is not too bad. Oh and it has 3 rows and narrower to fit in tight places.

No one will buy it. The population of the U.S is more than 10 times bigger than Australia, but they 5x more Land Cruisers in Australia. It doesn't make sence for Toyota to sell such a low volume vehicle in a show room with Camry's and Rav4s

The $139k excludes on road costs. Toyota lists this at $150,966 on the road...! But consider this: When it comes to price you need to bare in mind that these vehicles have the best resale value of anything on the Australian market bar none. So despite what you pay you'll get it all back when you sell it if you look after it. Buy a Mercedes for $200k and it drops $30k after the 1st year and keeps dropping after that. Just price a 2nd hand 200 series for further proof of this. Most people talk price only without talking about cost of ownership.

A nice vehicle but has a payload the same as my Pajero Sport which cost half the price. By the time you fill the large fuel tank and put in the family your not going to have much left for towball download etc in the payload range so for towing and adding gear you then have to go aftermarket and spend more cash
