I'd rather they give us slightly more emissions with a vehicle that lasts 200K miles than a vehicle that give us slightly less emissions but needs a new engine head after 50K miles. When a vehicle lasts longer, there is less waste to have to replace the vehicle and benefits the consumer having lower cost of repairs.

I would also prefer a more reliable car. But depending on how much you drive, multiplied by the difference in fuel efficiency, you might be polluting more by keeping the old car. Cars can be recycled either for spare parts or materials. But it's probably much cheaper to keep the older vehicule

The Japanese manufacturers are building the best cars in the world, leading the rankings in reliability, low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), longevity etc. This "scandal" (that didn't affect at all customers' safety) is tiny vs. the ones that involved the European, Korean and Chinese groups. Lexus is #1 in reliability (according to Consumer Reports annual reliability surveys for the last few years) and #3 in low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership)!!! While Toyota is #2 in reliability and #1 in low TCO, Mazda is #3 in reliability and #6 in low TCO, Honda is #4 in reliability and #5 in low TCO, Acura #5 in reliability and #8 in low TCO, Subaru #6 in reliability and #7 in low TCO etc. These rankings and their longevity are reflected in their top resale values, far above Chinese, Indian, Korean clunkers. But there are many that didn't read or/and didn't understand the news: the small tricks played by these Japanese manufacturers didn't affect customers' safety at all, they just avoided stupid "green" limitations placed by the governments (pretending to save the planet, but actually being pushed down our throats - to lead us to poverty and tighter control).

Also Nissan was able to produce a new VQ 3.8 DI motor for the Frontier which has no turbos and based off proven VQ reliability. Also GM's 2.7T is overbuilt like a diesel. Its been used for years and is bullet proof. In short, only ones to blame are the bone head engineers at Yota that don't know what they are doing. Facts. The 3.4 is a shitty motor with design defects. They tried to copy Ford's ecoboost tech and even shared some of that technolgy with them in return for Yota's hybrid tech. The stricter you push emission controls (and they get stricter every year), the more unreliable the the vehicle will be (causing vehicle to run lean) or have worse performance (see what Euro 4 and 5 did to motorcycles). This ridiculous green push is to destroy ICE industry and control the population with E vehicles which will not save the environment because E vehicles will not be fixed or used when the warranty expires compared to much more affordable maintainable ICE vehicles. That's why you don't see early Teslas driven anymore. Also, we can force this anti-freedom, anti-human, anti-free market green push onto all Western nations and the global emissions will still not be reduced much due to China and India polluting the most. Fact is most cars and bikes are clean as they ever been. We still need oil to power factories, lubricate vehicles, use in trucks, ships, planes for the next 100+ years. You will not see a battery powered plane anytime soon. So, stop supporting this societal self destructive green agenda which isn't about saving the environment but about controlling ppl. Do not accept a worse vehicle caused by politicians that hate ppl's freedoms and want to lock us down again.

Toyota conducted crash tests using an 1800kg standard, which meets US requirements. However, the issue arose because Japan's requirement for the test is only 1100kg. As Toyota did not adhere to the Japanese standard, they had to announce the discrepancy as fraudulent. The truth will soon be revealed by the media. Well done, Toyota.

Glad they all came forward, but in the end, overtesting at Toyota is just that except for the tuning on the 2015 Lexus RX and the airbag timer ignition on 2014 Crown/2015 Isis. Mazda is interesting about the crash tests, because according to the IiHS in the USA, Mazda for example when the made the side crash test harder in 2023, only one model across the industry passed with the highest rating in the small SUV class - the CX-5 received the plus rating when no other car in that class achieved it. It seems while interesting none of these cheating really impacts anyone in the USA and only some of them impact those in Japan.

The affected vehicles are only for the Japanese market because this is a Japanese government agency requesting investigations on products sold under their jurisdiction. The Japanese government cannot issue a no-sell order on, say, a Daihatsu product made in Indonesia or a Toyota truck made in Mexico. These investigations do not necessarily mean non-JDM models are trouble-free. It's up to the country these vehicles are sold in to do their due diligence to make sure products sold there comply with local regulations. We can only know whether a USDM product is safe if NHTSA conducts random qualification tests for that product sold in the US.
