Toyota 4Runner Overlanding and Camping With My Dog

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I bought this 2004 Toyota 4Runner with the express intention of doing a 4Runner camping build and getting out on some 4runner overlanding and camping adventure with my dog, Starbuck. After spending a bunch of time (and a little money) getting the 4runner camper build ready, I was finally ready to take it out and put it to the test on one of the hardest parts of the Oregon BDR, ORBDR Section 5 near Sisters, Oregon. We spent the night camping in the 4runner with our friend Ducfan in his 1985 4Runner before heading out to tackle the sandy, rocky goodness that is Oregon BDR section 5. Wheeling in the 4runner was so much easier than I expected and Starbuck was an amazing adventure dog throughout the entire trip. I can't wait to get out on more Oregon BDR 4x4 camping and overlanding adventures very soon!

I traded in my 2019 overlanding 4Runner for a Tundra for the road trip comfort and ability to tow a larger RV. I loved my 4Runner! I also added the Bilstein 5100s and had mine pretty well set up for camping. I also slept in the back on an air mattress and found it to be OK, but not as good as a tent with a cot and air mattress. In regards to your tires... I am bestowing upon you rare wisdom in regards to when it is time to replace the current tires. I am a tire nut. I love evaluating tires and have ran at least a dozen different brands and tread patterns in search of the ultimate tire for the Pacific Northwest. I finally reached the holy grail of AT tires a couple of years ago with my 4Runner. The absolute best tire you can run is the Goodyear Wrangler Ultra Terrain AT. I installed a set from Discount Tire on my 4Runner and put 40k miles on them in everything from hard packed snow going over Snoqualmie Pass, to jagged rocks in 90 degree temps on the Mexico/Arizona border. I have ran them as a daily driver, and on a 3700-mile road trip. They grip incredibly well on all surfaces and wear like iron. No hydroplaning, no chipping on gravel, low noise, and run true to size. I was so impressed with them that I installed a set on my new Tundra. They are very, very good. Here is a link to my review of them... kzread.info/dash/bejne/X5t30q6IYJCpkdY.html

Love the Overlander camping video w/Starbuck! Makes me miss my 1985 4-Runner, same color, as Ducfan’s that I used to have 😢. Watching this makes me want to convert my 2014 GMC Sierra 2500HD with a shell into a cool camping rig.

I have a 2005 4Runner but I don't use it for overlanding, so I don't call it "muh rig". It's more of a zombie apocalypse SHTFmobile. The back end is filled with recovery stuff. I need to lift it 2" and put more off road tires on it. I'm also going to paint it with black Monstaliner polyurethane bed liner so it's immune to bushwhacking trail rash. My camping focus lately is ultralight motorcycle camping on my baby GS.

If I wanted to try overlanding, instead of my 2005 4Runner, I'd build a little foamy (fiberglass over construction foam insulation) camper that drops into the bed of my 4WD Hijet mini truck. It doesn't have much articulation and it has small wheels so it doesn't do rock trawling or rolling over downed trees, but it's a little billy goat on steep hills. It only weighs 1600 pounds so it climbs well and it's very narrow and turns on a dime. See @Mikefestiva and @OlympicOverland for examples of homemade 4WD mini truck campers in action.

Welcome to the 4runner gang! great intro song by Matt, lol! Edit: also, when it comes time to buy new tires, I would suggest the Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires. They are designed for colder climates(like yours) and keep good traction in the snow, even when aired down.

4th gen is my 2nd favorite, 1st gen being my all time favorite. I have a 5th gen, and it’s been an awesome truck up until just lately. I have some crazy electrical issues going on within the dashboard. It’s obviously a common issue, since it’s been given a name, the “Christmas tree dash”, but unfortunately, no one has been able to give me a solution as to how to rectify the problem yet... I have the 2.5” lift, front and back with the 5150’s, and it fits 33’s. I just had to do a little trimming to the plastic wheel wells in the front. I also have off set rims. I just think that yours has less unnecessary technology that you really don’t need, which is a good thing for you.

Maaaaan I miss my old 1st gen 4runner! I sold my 1986 with 305k miles and got a one owner 1999 4runner limited with an e-locker. Also, if you want 33s with less work, you can fit 255/85r16 or 255/80r17. You'll have better clearance with the upper control arms and less unsprung weight making it easier on your steering, suspension, and brakes.

Great edit!! I dunno man your crossing lines but it’s not a foul by any means……I think it’s cool and you never claimed riding buddy only pertains to moto riding buddy!! I think it’s cool and have a Jeep Cherokee and ya know what’s even the issue with enjoying the outdoors in some comfort. If you didn’t post this who knows if you would post a moto vid. You don’t push the content hard and it’s a great sprinkle of change.

Kinda toll platform. I wonder how soon you'll start to hate that in/out procedure :) I tried similar setup twice using two different SUVs and ended up buying a truck with a high roof shell and built a sleeper inside. Night and day, I must admit. Now there is no workout for in/out, the truck (lifted, triple-locked, on 35s) is damn capable offroad and gives me more storage space than I really need. Good luck with you 4Runner but don't dich an idea to use your Tundra for overlanding ;)

Regarding your “wandering” K9… there are wireless dog fences that can be setup anywhere. The configuration of the restricted area for your dog is setup through your smartphone and utilizing gps technology. Your dog then wears an electronic collar and it activates (progressively increasing in intensity)when it approaches the gps defined boundary. Your dog can then be off leash and be safely within the boundary you set. Your video was a nice departure from adventure MC riding. Is it possible to do a separate channel for overlanding.

Separate channel is possible but a lot of effort. I'd rather get 4,000 views here than 40 on a brand new channel nobody is watching, lol.
