Toy Story 4 Changed Everything

Pixar has made loads of great films and the Toy Story movies are certainly up there. In this video, I go over some of my thoughts on each of the films, including Toy Story 4, and discuss what I see as the most compelling and interesting part of that film. Thank you for watching. I hope you enjoy the video :)

    This is a really optimistic look at the film. Watching the director's commentary reveals that they had no idea what they were doing and actively laughed in the face of fans at all their theories. The creators of TS4 (specifically the writers and directors) had no real respect for the first three films, and it shows when you listen to them.

    Woody can do way better than being with a porcelain feminist who chastises and chews him out for information about rescue plans she didn’t bother telling him more about and treating him as incompetent out in the open in front of him and to others. Woody should’ve moved on from Bo and not become a simp. There’s plenty of fish, or toy fish in the sea. Also, this doesn’t factor into anything from TS4, since it’s not addressed at all, but Andy’s gonna literally murder Bonnie for losing his only sentimental childhood toy after not playing with him for 3 days.

Toy Story 3 was a film I regret not seeing on its release date due to me being older. But when finally watching it you can't help but shed tears at the end. Toy Story 4 was something I wasn't expecting to happen, and yet again it was a great film with sudden twists and again had me weeping on the inside.

    Totally agree with this. While the series could have ended easily with the third one, now that the fourth one exists I see why it’s being continued. Simply going from kid to kid would only imply a sad end. Seeing toys like Woody find a new purpose feels much more satisfying. And this does open up a lot of possibilities for the series as well, if they do decide to continue it. We can follow Woody on a whole new style of adventures, or we could follow Buzz and the rest of the toys in more traditional adventures.

    Great analysis! But I still feel like completely changing Woody's motivations and moral code, in effect his entire identity at the end of 4 felt very unearned and abrupt. Thanks to your explanation I can see better the message they might have been going for, but I don't think they pulled it off in practice at all. In fact I think the ending of 4 felt extremely forced and unsatisfying, like they had an idea of the moral they wanted to go with but without an effective game plan to let the characters reach it organically. This is why I see Toy Story 4 as an artistic failure, just as many worried it would be.

    Spartan Jameson Locke 1. I find the ending was satisfying. Why should Woody stay when Bonnie clearly outgrew him? Bonnie didn't even notice him gone so he had no reason to stay with her. 2.I'm gonna assume that the reason the ending of 3 was ruined for you because Bonnie ended up outgrowing woody. Well since Bonnie was in daycare in 3, and she's going to kindergarten in 4 that means it was 2 years after 3, plenty of time for a kid to outgrow a toy, especially an old one like Woody. 3. Woody stood for loyalty. That was his flaw in the third movie. He convinced the toys to go to the attic because they had to be there for Andy towards the end of the movie. Only then does he realize that the toys would be happier with Bonnie than Andy. Toy story 4 is a continuation of that. He realizes he'll be happier without Bonnie since she outgrew him and he could do good for other toys and kids by helping toys find a kid at the carnival

    I really appreciate your analysis of this movie not being so one-sided. You did acknowledge what they did to Buzz's character, which got under a lot of people's skin. But overall your tone and diction provides an unbiased view of this film in a way that I haven't seen done yet. It acknowledges the writing, and while that is questionable, there are some real gems hidden in what could be considered a flop for this amazing franchise. So thank you for that, it really means a lot to see the good side of things.

    Very good thesis. I'd correct one point, though. Bo Peep's life was not child-free. Remember that she was eager to get to the sandbox to be played with by the children of visiting families. The difference is that she could go from child-to-child on her own terms rather than being left to fate. Plus she had the satisfaction of helping other toys find their own permanent children.

    The three previous movies are about how toys only fullfil their purpose when they are played by a kid; in Woody's case, to be played by Andy. In the fourth, the idea of being played by a kid is not discarded. After all, Woody and Bo meet again when being played by a kid. Toy Story 4 is about Woody realising his place is no longer with his owner, but with Bo. Not that he doesn't need a kid or that kids don't need him, but that he doesn't need an owner, Bonnie, and Bonnie doesn't need him.

    I felt that Toy Story 4 made Bonnie pretty unlikeable, at least to me. I mean I get that she's a little kid, but her treatment of Woody really rubbed me the wrong way. And for what? A toy that probably won't last that long anyway, we all know how durable Forky isn't. And it really trashes on what Andy told Bonnie, that Woody was special to him. And it just generally goes against what Woody has held dear to him, his family. I just can't see them apart I really can't. This film makes me think "you know, maybe they should have gone in the attic, or stayed at Sunnyside." either option would have been better than Bonnie.

    For the moment toy story 4 was annonced, unlike everyone else, I trusted Pixar. Pixar knew that they couldn't qpoil their best franchise And that they must have something to tell. And to me, TS4 is essential. I see this as Toy story 1: the fear of beeing abandonned Toy story 2: accepting that you will be abandonned Toy story 3: beeing abandonned Toy story 4 : how to move on After beeing abandonned. So yeah, TS4 matter a lot. And especially if you already felt the Woody situation. If you already have to Say goodbye to someone you deeply loved And was your reason to be alive. Moving on isn't an easy thing to do. And I 'm happy to see theses themes exposed in toy story. Now, how well it was handled. We Can talk about it. You Can dislike the movie but to me, you can't Say that the movie is useless. Even if ts3 sounded like a Real ending

    Oh yeah, leaving your entire family who you've been for décadas and faced the most dificult of obstacles a toy could even had, you will leave them all behind just because you haven't been played with for 3 DAYS, even tho it doesn't matter how much your played with, but you will always have your spot, and woody abandones all of them just to be with his love interets who has bullied you around others, seems like a very good life lesson to me, definitly nothing wrong here.

    In my opinion toy story 4 was a good woody film just not a good toy story film At the end of 3 woody didnt leave andy for bonnie He left andy for his family Buzz was telling woody “whats most important is that we stick together” It took awhile for woody to realize this in 3 but then they just discarded the idea In the beginning of 4 woody was the person to calm his family down not dolly Dolly didnt seem to understand what was going on Also i didnt like how malicious Gabby gabby its true she turned out to be misguided but the way she manipulated woody to get to his voice box was just a wrong message It felt more of woodys character to show her that she didnt need a voice box to be play with That even if your not perfect you could be loved

    Toy Story is one of those franchises that is near and dear to my heart. They are not just some of my favorite animated movies, they are just some of my favorite movies, and luckily, I didn't feel like this one ruined the streak they have like I thought it would. I've seen it three times in the theater, and I have actually liked it more and more every time I've watched it. I found myself connecting with a lot of the messages in it at this point in my life, just as I did with the others at their release times.

    Toy Story 4 really did change everything. I mean, come on, they introduced toys that have no life (the racoon and the truck that Woody uses to get away from the kids). How do you explain the universe now knowing that some toys have life and others don't?

  • @eoincampbell1584

    @eoincampbell1584

    I did find that weird, but the toys always did have "accessories" that weren't alive. Perhaps the Skunk car (or racoon as you are calling it) was the accessory for some rodent-themed action figure or something, and that's why it opens up.

    I always thought that toys gained life because a human directed a feeling towards them, or they had in some way a facial expression that resembled that of human (like the remote controle car). This worked until Toy Story 3, but with 4, i don't know.

    My only criticism is that Andy was going to take Woody to college. That love is still there clearly. Imagine if Andy comes home to visit, decides, "Maybe I'll stop over at Bonnie's and see how she's doing" and discovers Woody is permanently gone. I'd hate for there to be a 5th film, but only if it meant Andy and woody reuniting, and discussing that love, from a toy's perspective, doesn't always mean playtime. Hell, Andy could have gotten married and has his own child, and passed Woody down that way. I was fine with Toy Story 3's ending, but there really was no need for TS4 to exist. It's clearly a cashgrab.

    I would've preferred you discuss how Toy Story 4 isn't logically consistent with the previous films rather than the thematic tether. That argument can be made regardless of the quality of the story, such as with the Last Jedi or Game of Thrones. Woody's ideals of family, loyalty that he learnt throughout the whole trilogy are completely contradicted in TS4 and is even worse than Buzz's intelligence. The arguments you make to rationalise Woody's decision don't work when compared to the last three movies. His entire motivation by the end of the trilogy is sticking with his family. You make an argument that would've worked if the story had consistency and kept to the course TS1-3 was taking, if the groundwork was there to justify the 'themes'. It doesn't stack up when you try to compare the character progression: 'I'll have ol' Buzz Lightyear there with me, to infinity and beyond' at the end of TS2, 'what's important now is that we stick together' after coming back for his friends in TS3. Straight from the horses mouth. That was his mindset at the end of TS3 and The changes made to the characters at the start of TS4 are a complete 180. All of a sudden Woody's feeling left out again, which is weird considering how Bonnie was so attached to him at the end of TS3. By what TS3 showed us, she's going to get back home in TS4 and ask 'where's Woody?' Andy asked her to take care of him, it's such an obvious contradiction. All of a sudden he's more in love with Bo Peep than he cares for his family. He cared for her obviously, as was shown in TS3 when he is reminded that she's gone, but knows that his place (where he wants to be) is with his family. He doesn't want to go to College with Andy, get lost at the Dinoco gas station, be stuck in Sid's room or a museum in Japan. He wants to be with Buzz, Jesse, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Slinky, Rex and Hamm. Whether that's in Bonnie's room or at the garbage dump, he won't leave his friends. His family. And oh my god, Gabby Gabby is a villain. Kidnapping Forky, intimidation towards the other toys in the store and around the carnival, forcing Woody to ransom his voicebox. Her redemption comes at the expense of her and Bo Peep gaslighting Woody; he's made to feel guilty because he wants to keep his voicebox and get himself and Forky back to their family in one piece. Somehow that's seen as selfish. It's so incredibly contrived

    Thanks for making this, as it seriously helped me reframe how I viewed the 4th movie. I still enjoyed the movie a lot, as the Toy Story movies have always had a certain standard of quality, being the franchise that helped put Pixar on the map. However, the one aspect that still doesn't sit very well with me, is the fact that Andy emphasized so greatly how important Woody was to him at the end of 3. It makes sense that she gets more attached to Jessie over time, but it's just sad to think that Andy's favorite toy growing up was neglected by Bonnie and lost on a road trip. But hey, she's still got Forky, I guess...

    I enjoyed Toy Story 4, but I'm in the camp of those who think it was unnecessary. It tarnishes the legacy of the previous 3 films. I hate that they dumbed down Buzz, and that we barely see the other toys. Originally, TS4 was supposed to be a romantic comedy? If that was the goal, they failed. There was barely any development or exploring of Woody & Bo Peep's relationship. There were interesting themes to be explored with the characters of Bo, Duke Kaboom, Gabby Gabby, and even Bunny & Ducky. They all suffer from longing and abandonment, but the film barely scratched the surface. Gabby Gabby got somewhat of an arc, but I felt so much pain for her. Because I can't help but think that the little girl she ended up with will quickly abandon her. She was crying because she was lost. She's not lost anymore. She found her parents. Lastly, I thought one of the central themes of Toy Story, is that no matter what, we try our best to stick together as a family. TS4 betrays that. I did not like Woody separating from his family, especially when there is not enough to tie him to Bo. They should have all stuck together. But even then, I would have been disappointed. Because now we know that Woody wasn't really fulfilled with Bonnie. It would have been better to end it at 3, by allowing us to believe that he had a happy ending. To me TS4 is tragic for everyone one involved, including Gabby Gabby. I pray they never make TS5.

  • @Mic-Mak

    @Mic-Mak

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@LuigiFan04 I'm not denying they were in love. I am saying that throughout the Toy Story films, we didn't see much of their relationship, unlike Woody's relationship with Buzz, Jesse, and even Bullseye & Slinky. Things can't just happen off screen, we need to see it. I am sure that you have met people that you've know for less time but have grown closer to than people you've known for over a decade. It happens all the time. Woody has been with Buzz and the rest of the Andy's toys longer, than he has been with Bo Peep. They've gone through more trials and tribulations together, which naturally strengthens their bonds. Bo has never been on any adventure outside Andy's room like the rest of Andy's toys. If TS4 was supposed to be a love story, we needed to see more between Bo & Woody. I am sure you've seen romantic comedies, or films that are about love stories. The romantic relationship between the love interests is at the center of the story. This is absolutely not the case in TS4. TS4 is about Woody's search for meaning more than anything else. It's not about Bo at all.

Ty4´s villain is very much like ty1 woody: they love one specific child and would do everything for them. They stick to the rules (gaby gaby literally goes by the book) and are willing to use others to achieve their ends. But she isn’t a villain. She doesn’t screw over woody with her deal. And woody helping her is a proof of how far he’s gone. Suffice to say, I dearly loved that movie. I don’t think we’re gonna get another movie in this series, but I’ve been wrong before sooo... who knows? It just makes me want to play the tabletop rpg tiny even more now x)

    The biggest argument everyone has about TS4s ending was that it goes against TS3s ending, where he chose staying with his fellow toys. But what everyone is forgetting in their arguments is Bopeep. He didn’t just abandon them, they were safe and happy. Woody chose to be with the woman he loved and lost, as well as found a new purpose for himself after Bonnie lost interest in him. Just ending with him continuously being a hand-me-down toy left too much room for a sad ending.

    That's what I got out of the 4th movie. Sometimes you have find a bigger and better purpose that will give you the power to do more than you thought you could.

    Wow this was a good video. I already enjoyed Toy Story 4 for what it was, but now I REALLY appreciate it! Thank you! It pains me to see how many people thought it was a bad movie. If you look at the user reviews on IMDB it's almost nothing but negative feedback. Some people are even claiming this movie was a cash grab.....sigh. 😔😔

    @@Lowart thanks for replying! I do enjoy animation a lot and hope to one day make my own videos discussing my thoughts on cartoons and movies (AND anime). Maybe one day be an animator myself?! That'd be cool. 😊

    @@saraykaty23TOTALLY. I don't understand anyone on IMDB anymore. They praise mediocre movies and trash the good ones. It's actually quite upsetting.....
