Toy Documentary - Mattel Dream Car - 1953
Ойын-сауық
The 1953 Mattel Dream Car was the first toy car made by Mattel. It was designed by Elliot Handler one of the founders of Mattel and Joseph Kossoff. We will also be looking at the Mattel XP-1960 which was released in 1954. Lastly i will briefly talk about The 1960 Dart, i was not able to find a model of this car but i will go over what i know about it with pictures and backgrounds.
It was just recently announced that the Dream Car will be made into a 1:64th Scale Hot Wheels diecast Car, and inspired me to dig a little deeper into the history of this car.

I have just found the XP 1960. It was my wife's as a child. Steering wheel missing, windsheild broken and foil peeling. Works fine. Going to sell it
That is awesome I have the Hot Wheels version! Very accurate!

Great video! Bought the hotwheels version of the original design. It is nice design and I hope that hotwheels follows the Mattel original colours used on the 1953 on the new hotwheels recolours as they normally do. It nice to see Mattel/ hotwheels bring back this design to see the 75th anniversary of the company.

It would great to see the others as well. Put in a word to Mattel to see where it goes. Also I would like the designers do a bit of work on this to create a batmobile from this car. It would need a lot of work in regards to legal needs from all parties involved be it would interesting if done right.

I got it yesterday
Got the hw version. Got to track down family fotos. I'm almost positive I made dad envious. Nice video, will sub. Good day
‘53 in red is definitely the best looking, great choice and very enjoyable viewing. Keep em coming! 🚀
Very beautiful car. Glad to own an Aqua colored model. Its marvelous.
I was unaware of this. Thanks for the insightful stuff.
Never seen a friction drive without the housing before. Makes it look even older than it is, which is actually cool. That chromed green on the third one actually looks awesome too, too bad they downgraded the design so much. Woulda been great if they'd had that on an original.
Nice video presentation!
Excellent work! Mr. Grooves sent me 👨🚀 #racegrooves I want to see my Major Matt Mason sitting in one of these with Colorforms’ Terra Firma, out on an atom bomb date.

cool! if your on instagram you can always tag or message me there to show pics.
It reminds me of a pre-war car from fallout.
Hi! Excellent pieces & vídeo! Do You have the scans of The box? I'd like yo make a little box for my hot Wheels...
This reminds me of the Golden Sahara custom car: kustomrama.com/wiki/The_Golden_Sahara
Picked up a xp1960 turquoise about a year ago. No missing or broken pieces. Chrome tape in great shape, windshield scratched slightly. Never saw them before I bought it. Still gotta find the 1953 version
Where is the drawing at 1:16 from? Was that in a book somewhere?
It is too bad it can not be removed but child safety rules that Mattel must follow are strict. I am happy that it is made at all is great.
I see your Dream Car has blue/grey tail lights. Was that common, or did it vary depending on the body color? My Chartreuse has Red tail lights(only 1 actually) and of course its missing the top and steering wheel. Great video and knowledge base-thanks

I'm sorry i couldn't say, from what I've seen and understood there was so many variations in this toy there could be a number of different configurations. Things were not made like they are today. When a factory worker ran out of one color they could have just used another color until the correct color got refilled. You could try asking skphile (link in the video description) he actually has collected quite a few of these cars.

the modelers are converting them to a rear-hinged setup so they can flip open. the doors are also cut free and open by sliding out, then back. i'm currently creating a half-size (about 1/144 scale) dream mobile and its going slowly- carving it from a laminated thin-ply box i made with the right sizes/tapers. it will use racing champions wheelsets and i have to make a mold to create the bubble. the chassis, front bumper and grille will be integral just like the HW car. not sure about the interior- maybe a cut-up racing champions micro piece. for the drive-in on my train layout.

Funny you say that brother first thing I did was go check my hotwheels version to see lol that would have bin cool
Interesting! I just picked up a Dream Car at a flea market. It 's front bumper and subframe are white plastic as are the wheels. It has no motor (It clearly wasn't meant to have one) There is no makers name on it. Could it be a knock-off? Or something that Mattel made for Sears or the like? I'd be happy to send you pictures.
How many Dream Cars were made in 1953?
Use plastic weld and it will never pop off again
I have dream mobile but hot wheels car
