Tour This French Chateau - Part One
My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.
Help me to keep making videos and restoring this building by visiting my patreon page.

I discovered these Chateau channels a few days ago when it popped up in the list of the "Recommended" videos after I watched some of the bizarre "80mil beverly hills mansion" videos by one of the real-estate agents. To give you some perspective: Stephanie (the lady on the phone) made a video about how much it costs to live in such a chateau. It varies (obviously), but you can squeeze within EUR4000 monthly fixed costs to make it livable+whatever you dedicate to restoration and building, and get one of these beauties for anything in the 500k-3mil (the upper range would probably be fully renovated). Yes, it's still out of reach for most people, but if you get along with your family, have a bit of savings and will to take up a lot of mortgage...it's not that bad actually ;)
Missed opportunity to call this a 'Chatour' 😏

Just consult the older generations who learned (along with the three 'Rs') practical arts and crafts, and trades, as well as the fine arts. We even used to memorize poetry, can you imagine!? ...like Emily Dickinson, or in 5th grade we read Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's very Long poem about an 'Indian' Fellow called "Hiawatha" (along with Minnehaha his bride, soul mate, and love). We even studied the Irish and English poets ...like William Butler Yeats and his poem about Ballylee Castle called "The Tower" (in 10th grade), But we loved Thomas Moore best, whose poems are best heard sung, ie. " Believe me, if all those endearing young charms" (all throughout grade school and in choir). And the English poets are endless, the greatest of course being William Shakespeare and his beautiful, eternal, and profound Sonnets. One of my favorites is #54 about the Rose and her true virtue and beauty that comes from within (her scent), as each person's true beauty and virtue comes from within ... ie. one's true or highest nature. Or who hasn't learned "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? ...& the darling buds of May, #18. And although John Keat's poem "Ode To A Grecian Urn" taught us...“Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know” ...I rather fancied "Fancy" the best. Lastly, there is the most mystic poet of all, whom one might say was Lord Byron who gave his young life for an ideal of an ever-illusive Democracy in Greece. But no, there is another greater still and my favorite mystic of all time ...the mysterious and profound William Blake... who can forget "Jerusalem"? Isn't it sung every year at the 'Last Night at The Proms'? And, although I am an American it always gives me chills up my spine... because I suspect that Blake was on to something. Did Joseph of Arimathea indeed, bring his nephew, a young boy named Jesus to England's shores??? And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green: And was the holy Lamb of God, On England's pleasant pastures seen! And did the Countenance Divine, Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here, Among these dark Satanic Mills? Bring me my Bow of burning gold: Bring me my arrows of desire: Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my Chariot of Fire! I will not cease from Mental Fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand: Till we have built Jerusalem, In England's green & pleasant Land. And btw, Americans can make curtains too!! 🤠🧐🤓🤯 @@jennifergarvin-sanchez4335

I could stay up all night listening to you Michael 😍☺️
I just started watching you and the first thing I noticed that you do differently from the other vlogs about re storing a chateau is I can tell you love the history of the house. You point out the features and explain the artists and where they come from and you haven't ripped it all out to "make it your own". You let the house live, not re-birth it. That is wonderful. I love hearing about the bees in the fireplace and the art work above the other fireplace. This is obviously a labor of love for all of you and the house is in the right hands. You said that everything was gone when you got it and you have had to buy all the furniture. But you've obviously chose things that fit this place. Maybe even some of them were there at one time and were sold and you might have brought them back. I wish I were young again and could do something like this. I love that your whole family have moved there and are sharing the joys and hardships together. There is nothing better than that. I look forward to watching all of your vlogs. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I absolutely love the skits you and Stephanie have! Too cute and too wonderful! Also, Micheal definitely has the best room/best view EVER!! Ugh so awesome! It makes me daydream of living in a Chateau!
