A shadow of what it used to be. I lived in Long Eaton and used to go there in the late 70's, it was really busy with lots of different wagons, shunters and other loco's, it was a spotters paradise with everything from Class 03's up to the Peaks. This lad I know went into the yard, nicked a uniform + cap and rode trains all day clipping passengers tickets, riding trains for free. Anyhoo, AFAIK Toton is due to be redeveloped, it'll all be gone soon.

I drove my first diesel there, my Dad knew a worker there and he took me and my Dad around for a tour. Class 47, a little 2 min into the sheds. I was only about 13! Best day. Shame about all the dead locos :(

@@terrytracey1393 Yes, I remember ATI! I joined the railway service as a CO.1 parcels sheeting clerk at Edinburgh Waverley. After about 9 month's service I applied for and got a CO.2 post as "Traffic Monitoring Clerk" at Cadder Yard (on the Edinburgh & Glasgow main line between Lenzie and Bishopbriggs). The Lenzie Area Manager expressed surprise that I had survived even nine months of parcels sheeting. He had started his own railway career doing parcels sheeting at Newcastle Forth. (Parcels sheeting means writing out the delivery sheets for the delivery motor drivers, who were supposed to obtain a signature for each parcel delivered.) Traffic Monitoring and ATI were both forerunners of the TOPS system, intended to improve the monitoring and control of the railway's resources. The truth is that in 1970 the railway hadn't a clue where most of its wagons were, and in fact barely knew where its locomotives were. As Traffic Monitoring Clerk I was located in the ATI room in Cadder Yard, adjacent to the Yard Master's (officially the "Yard Assistant's") office. As a CO.2 (Clerical Officer Grade 1), I was nominally in charge of the CO.1 ATI Clerk, although I wasn't yet twenty. "Traffic Monitoring", at least at Cadder Yard, turned out to be a bit of a disaster. The yard staff, from the Yard Master downward really weren't interested and gave minimal co-operation, and Regional management, having invested a lot of resources in starting the scheme, didn't seem to care whether it worked or not in practice. I found my job very frustrating: if senior management didn't care, I didn't feel justified in "shopping" hard-working shunters and inspectors. ATI on the other hand was a little bit more popular with the yard inspectors and shunters as it gave them some idea of what traffic was coming into the yard. There were ATI (Advanced Traffic Information) offices in all the major marshalling yards. ATI used the G.P.O. Telex system to send the "Consist" of departing trains to the ATI office at destination yard. A telex machine was basically a teleprinter with a dial allowing you to dial other telex machines. By the standards of the time the Telex machines in ATI offices were modern. The ATI clerk would type the consist off-line using a punched paper tape. This tape would then be used to transmit the consist to the receiving yard at a faster speed than anyone could reasonably be expected to type at. The faster the message was sent, the cheaper the telex bill. AFAIK "consist" is originally an American railroading term. It would be a fairly concise list of everything on the train. It would give the locomotive number(s) and then for each wagon on the train a code for the wagon type, the wagon number, a route code, station from, station to, contents (and maybe some other information that, 50 years later I can't remember). A very few years later ATI was replaced by TOPS (Total Operations Processing System), which was much more comprehensive. For the first time in its history it let the railway know where all its wagons were. Then, having got a system that could allow good control of wagon-load services, senior management threw all the less-than-trainload traffic away, leaving the sadly depleted freight railway that we have in Britain today. For myself I grew rapidly disenchanted with my role as "Traffic Monitoring Clerk". The local management were interested only in saving money, and they decided that an ATI Clerk was not needed on the dayshift as there were only 2 or 3 trains departing Cadder Yard requiring consists on that shift. As a result I did type quite a few ATI consists myself, despite never having been trained to touch type as the ATI clerks could. My consists were therefore all typed with one finger, something I became reasonably proficient at. (I wish I could touch type now though!!) Thoroughly disillusioned with my work in "Traffic Monitoring", I decided I wanted to become a "real" railwayman. I applied to transfer to the Wages Grades and become a Goods Guard at Cadder Yard. This was technically a demotion, but was far more satisfying than "Traffic Monitoring"! After about a year I transferred from Cadder to Glasgow Sighthill, where after about seven years as a Guard I became Staff Clerk. I eventually left the railway service in 1982, after about twelve and a half years service, to go to Glasgow University. All in all I believe I enjoyed my time with British Rail. I have to admit that I don't even know where Toton is. I think it's somewhere in the Midlands. London Midland Region to my way of thinking!! Definitely a long way south of Carlisle, which was the furthest South I ever worked! When I left the railway the newest diesels were the Class 56s, but they weren't in Scotland so I had no connection with them. I haven't really kept in touch with traction developments since. Clearly lots of diesels have come and gone since. Looking at the video I must say I'm a bit surprised that the railway still has so many diesels! There doesn't seem to be much traffic for them to haul!

Nice video isn't dominated by sheds and such a pitty all them class 60s are sat there rotting away that probably ain't moved + been started up since around 2006 onwards hopefully some of the 60s could possibly be put back into service as they hardly seen a decade and a half's worth of mainline use in the UK + a few still plod about but they was the very last brush built locomotives in the UK in the late 1980s so from 1989 to 1993 what a waste of millions of pounds worth of potential revenue earning very powerfull locos that have plenty of life left in them that could be re-engineered or used as standard and possibly overhauled and sold abroad! To say India and other third world countries as it's a lot cheaper to refurbish older loco's than build new!!!
