TOTO - Rosanna (Guitar Cover)

If you've followed my channel for a while, you'll know that I'm a big fan of the Joseph Williams era, and also love Isolation, and want to mainly focus on learning those albums. But I cannot start delving into such 'deep cuts' without touching something from the masterpiece that is TOTO IV. My favourite from the album is I think Make Believe, but Waiting for Your Love is a killer groove and I like It's a Feeling and Good For You also. Rosanna has been requested and is naturally the one to start with and may just be THE best song to represent the band and Luke's work.
Years and years ago I watched the Steve Lukather star licks video and spent a long long time learning this solo. However, Luke plays it slightly different there to what's on the record (the isolated guitar tracks are available these days on KZread). This isn't too surprising as Luke seems to be more of a 'in the moment' player and may play it different every time, but I had to relearn some pretty ingrained muscle memory, but it was fun to do. The end solo is also incredibly tricky and I think I know exactly what Luke plays, however, trying to play it up to speed at the end of a full take is something I think only a prime Lukather can do haha.

I use a Jackson DK2 Dinky from 2004 (I removed the tone pot and moved the volume over) into a Boss Me50 (where I get my tone) into a Palmer Pdi-09 (which simulated a mic'd up cab) into a Focusrite Scarlett into my computer running Logic Pro X (where I add a little EQ and Reverb).

That second guitar solo is one of the best rock guitar solos ever. Totally improvised which is why it's so good.

Agreed ! By chance would you throw in “Hot for Teacher” in the top 10 as well ? Eddie is all over that flat 5 and the way he builds the solo is masterful. His is feel in incredible …

Why does nobody really want to do the first solo but everybody wants to do the second solo?
Why can I only like this ONCE!! Probably my favorite Toto song ever! Lukather is a guitar god. He has played on so many hit records/songs inside and outside of Toto it's really insane his scope of work over the years.
Takes some balls to play over Luke's outro. Superb.
After watching your fingers when you play up-close, make me realize how great a guitarist Steve Lukather really is to be able to write such great chord and single note passages!

something I really like about watching your covers is your emphasis on stylistics, technique, and tone, without the Guitar Hero swagger and arrogant stage posturing. I mean you obviously are passionate about playing the guitar, and playing these cover songs. Lukather is definitely a guitar god but it’s exponentially easier to be that great when you have a Jeff Porcaro pocket like this to play in. If having a kick ass shuffle like that doesn’t bring the best out of everyone then what would!! The isolated drum track for this song is absolutely insane. The ghost notes and every little nuance in Jeff’s percussion work in this song are incredible. Until you hear it by itself, you have no clue just how busy he was in this song. Damn shame he died so young!

Love this song! You always do them justice. Bravo. Check out a 70s 80s British punk band called 999. They did a song called homicide and it's like the stones playing ac/dc, but with a punk-ish twist. It's catchy as hell. Again, fantastic playing my guy.👏👏👏
