Total War Warhammer - The Wood Elves Lore, Army, Units and Tactics

Ойындар

The Wood Elves, also known as the Asrai of Athel Loren, are a race in Warhammer fantasy who will very likely be the next DLC race for Total War Warhammer. This video will cover the lore, army compositions, units, and tactics of the Wood Elves / Wood Elf race.
We also cover the legendary lord choices, and possible mechanics like the World Roots and Wild Hunt that could make the Wood Elves campaign so interesting.

    I would love if Athel Loren would be a map inside the map. Like made out of two provinces, but each province is made up of smaller provinces, which get accessable once you send an army inside. Inside the unit sizes would be smaller, to showcase how much of a maze the forest is, and to make it very difficult for foreign armies to seize it. Give a big boost for raiding parties though, to give armies reason to raid the forest, without trying to conquer it. This would make the WE focuse on clearing out intruders of their realm, making them very self centered and selfish. Give them also a debuff when sending armies outside the forest, like constant attrition to dryads and spirits to showcase the magic of the firest fading. Give them the option to conquer the world though, through something like "forest corruption", essentially havjng the forest expand, so goreign armies will dispatch troops to deal with WE troops who spread it. Make the entire faction fight and defend in small skirmish battles essentially, with smaller units and dpecial mission types, like "Hunt down the herd", "drive off dwarven lumberers". Would be unique and fun I think

    Micro Crysis the Skaven will definitely need an own map, I mean their whole gimmick is having a city beneath every big human settlement, how can you accomplish that without having a two layered map? Let's hope they don't make them another horde

    I mean one example is with Karak eight peaks, that in its self would be an awesome separate campaign, with 3 factions multiple levels of underground and ground battlefield. Skarsnik, head taker and Belgar all going at each other I would be in love if they did something like that. And then they could work of the game mechanics from that.

I don't mind paying for dlc's as long as the quality of the new contents is great, and I think they will have to prove it especially with the wood elves. Btw, for the archers it made me think of the good old monk bowmen of shogun 2, great unit and i think that missile balance was very well done in that game. For the seasons, I was thinking that maybe they will use something like the moon calendar of the beastmen. Let me know what you think about this

    I really want to like the dark elves, they look awesome and have great units, but I hate their lore, they just come across as pouty emo teenagers and I don't get how there civilisation would work, with murder not only being legal but a part of day to day society and the greatest act of worship. At least chaos dwarf lore works as a dread causing, industrial slaving civilisation with political intrigue, and dark God worship as there not trying to constantly kill each other.

    I know this is a really old video, but I just found your channel a week ago or less, and have been steadily working my way back through most of them. Just felt like I had to say that I really want the Shadowdancer hero in the game, and I was really hoping for more agile animations for the Wardancers. Almost all of their animations, in my opinion, just end up with them spinning around like big leafy tops, rather than... dancing. Their Shadow Dances seem pretty bleh overall in my opinion too. The lack of agility there is kind of making me very worried for Death Hags/Witch Elves/Hellebron too. Really loved your idea of how to use the Worldroots though, would've loved that so much more than copy/paste Underway mechanic. Hope you're doing well.

    I really hope CA would implement even half of your suggestions, but at the same time my hopes are really low. I predict that seasons would be a simple event thing a-la Beastmen moon phases, without visual changes to the map. World roots idea is way more complicated than anything CA implemented so far. I think CA will make Wood Elves a half-horde faction with Athil Loren as a main hub with huge building chain, and self-sufficient armies that roam around the world. it's a cheap and easy to implement idea that also kinda works for Dark Elves wwith their Black Arks. Of course, i would like to have something more fleshed out than that.

  • @isaacsorrels4077

    With how much stuff they have planned for this trilogy it actually seems logical that the more that is added the more complex it will get. That way they can still streamline it for the young'ns who can learn the complexities slowly as the DLC's come out; or by starting with the base game and working their way through the DLC's after that if they jump in late. Seeing as how most teens and kids wouldn't be able to afford $100+ of DLC a year and a half from now I wouldn't worry about CA not adding complexity down the line if they have the work ethic for it. I feel the more worrying aspect is whether they will even have the desire to put in the work necessary for the complex mechanics many of these factions will require.

  • @Rhinopotamus
    @Rhinopotamus7 жыл бұрын

    My belief is that we will be seeing Wood Elves (with 3 LL Lords) next w/ Life Wizard as FLC for the Empire. Followed by Starsnik v.s. Belegar Ironhammer Lord Pack (maybe Campaign!?) w/ Wurrzag FLC, and then followed up Morghur v.s. Ariel Campaign pack that will include Bretonnia as FLC (also playing a heavy roll in the DLC) in December. Lastly (maybe who knows I am just speculating) Markus v.s. Taurox Heroes v.s. Monsters DLC which will bring both of those characters as Lords (putting each faction besides Chaos and Dawi at 4) and a host of monsters and monster slayers and heroes. Things like (Savage) Orc Big Bosses, River Trolls, Wolf-Priests of Ulric, Wargor, Jabberslythe, Norscan Berserker, some chaos beast maybe the Vortex Beast, Dragon Slayer, Bolt Thrower, ect w/ Grey Wizard as FLC for the Empire. Now. Some people are gonna say, well they have said they won't make DLC for DLC, and that is true. However, that doesn't mean they can't sell the Beastmen or even Wood Elf Units again under another pack. Lets say I am right, and you buy a Markus v.s. Taurox then you're Beastmen would start in Talabecland and you would be unable to get Malagor or Khazrak without CotB, and the same would go for Ariel v.s. Morghur who might start... well anywhere he gets rebirthed all the time. Creepy bastard.

I'm not sure dlc are meant to implement new game mechanics each time... this would meant more development so more time and higher price for it... and I think they planned 3 different game extensions exactly for that ;) My guess is that they might re-use the corruption mechanics indeed but in a different way.. maybe won't affect other armies so badly and just slow them down and make it easier to ambush for elves or something... On my part, i'd love to expend Athel Loren and other forest on the old world to make a sweet green map ^^ Thx again, keep up the good work ;)

    Thanks glad you enjoyed it! This next DLC seems like it will take at least a month and a half, possibly longer, before its ready to release. So I think they do have time to get a bit more creative than rehashing corruption mechanics for another race. New mechanics dont have to be complex to make a race feel different from others. And Wood Elves dont spread forest or corrupt things, its just not what they do as a race, so I'd prefer not to see it again. But we shall see soon!

    u had very good ideas in this video concerning mechanics, i think they should really play differently both on the campaign map and on the battlefield, considering there is nothing like them yet in this game. I think a way for them to sell this with great depth would be to sell it, just like the beastmen dlc at a rather high price, but maybe do the vlad von carstein trick and add a free new lord to a faction for everyone, i think lore wise, this would work best if they were to make morgur skull master a new lord for beastmen. Beastmen can definitely use another lord and the connection to wood elves would be very strong, also he has no mounts and his model can be worked off of already existing beastmen, just like vlad. (and the fact that youre lord never really dies makes a lot of sense with him aswell :D)

    more lords without mounts? hell no thats shid :( ( if malagor could use his wings for some flying or at least interrupting jumpability that would be very fine... but malagors wings are ... broke?.. or an illusion?) they could do so much with malagor ( y i know the animations would be a bit tricky...) but imagine a malagor that got the ability to jump in an infantry fight and knockdown everything around him, wouldnt that be cool? and legit... doe to his wings, which would have a reason to exist, finally

    well having a lord without a mount doesnt nessecarily have to be bad, it just depends on how interesting the character is, vlad for example is quite boring imo, but if done right i think they could make morghur quite interesting.

    Hey Indy :) Unfortunately you've got your Sundering and War of Vengeance lore timelines mixed up. The Sundering happened well before the events of the War of Vengeance, and the events that caused it. Caledor, formerly Imrik (not to be confused with Caledor II - Imrik's son and ALSO not to be confused with Caledor Dragontamer - Imrik's Grandfather) was the Phoenix King during the time of the Sundering, after Bel Shanaar was assassinated by Malekith. The Dark Elf raids on Dwarven Caravans was close to 800 years later. Caledor died during this time (he actually drowned himself, to avoid capture by Malekith), and his arrogant son (Caledor II) become Phoenix King. It's also expected that during this time the former Dwarf High King Snorri Whitebeard (old friend to Malekith before he turned evil), died, and Gotrek Starbreaker became High King. The elves did indeed get called back at the end of the war with the Dwarves, but it was not for the Sundering, but a new invasion from Malekith entirely. (one that is not well documented mind you.) In essence The Sundering had very little if nothing 'directly' to do with the Wood Elves. Other than that point, you're pretty well on point. Loved this video. :)

  • @milkandcookiesTW

    The forest began the long process of healing, Ariel realized her mistakes and allowed Orion to be reborn. Wood Elf society moved on from those dark days, and continued their millenia long existence. In the End Times, Malekith the Witch King becomes the true Phoenix King, uniting the Dark Elves, High Elves, and Wood Elves against Chaos, and after losing Naggaroth to a Khorne Daemon Invasion, sets up his new base in Athel Loren. All the remaining Elves band together to fight Archaon in Middenheim, and then the world is consumed when a Chaotic portal is opened under the city and Chaos wins. Everyone important gets teleported to Age of Sigmar, and Warhammer fantasy battle ends forever. Lileath the Wood Elf Goddess is I believe the Goddess responsible for creating Age of Sigmar, or at least plays a big part, because she realizes the world is doomed and sends Araloth and some other major characters through a portal to the new universe to start setting up.

    my hope remains that they will go back at some point for the older factions and release more content for them, either in DLC or FLC. but to be honest the Wood Elves have gotten more love than most, their army roster in TW Warhammer is as close to the corresponding armybook as any race has gotten. theyre in pretty good shape IMO, and there are tons of mods that change how they play significantly. Would be great to see the Sisters of Twilight or Drycha get added as a lord choice

More over the top, bizzare events are in all the 8th edition elf books and they over did lore of some units, a high elf example being swordmasters went from being superior scholar warriors to those who can kill by whistling a note.... etc. Glad there are lore videos, hoping CA holds more to pre 8th lore for the elves. Its not like a Bright Wizard who uses his powers alot automatically warps into a follower of the Chaos Gods

    milkandcookiesTW both are true... the warp is where magic winds come from, but its also where chaos gods live... the entire age of sigmar takes place in the warp, it is a realm made by sigmar (a god who also lives inside the warp), after the warp destroys the real world... the only way to destroy the chaos gods is to destroy the warp and get rid of magic... magic = warp, and a bright wizard is changed by the fire winds, so he kinda is a human warped slightly by the warp, we don't have to call it chaos but it is the same thing to me :P

  • @milkandcookiesTW

    @milkandcookiesTW

    7 жыл бұрын

    #1. Creative Assembly doesnt really give a shit about multiplayer campaigns and never have. Their balancing of factions does not revolve around MPC in the slightest. Which is a shame of course because I would love for MPC to get more content, but even more than regular Multiplayer its definitely on the backburner in terms of priorities over at CA. #2. I think you might have missed big parts of my arguments. Remember how I said you'd have to deploy a Spellweaver in a region for 5-10 turns to bring the World Roots online in that location? That gives an opponent plenty of time to deal with the Wood Elf agent, or set up an ambush at the site. There are additional ways they could balance it. As for taking cities, I also covered that pretty thoroughly in the video. Wood Elves dont have to be an expansionist race, they dont have to be about building an empire. By tying the Wood Elf economy to the world roots and bringing them back online, you wouldnt need to occupy settlements to build your economy. The Wild Hunt and World Roots mechanics, when tied into Objectives that encouraged you to attack different factions throughout the Warhammer world, would give you reason to explore and raze/sack different cities, and make for a really unique and fun playstyle I think, that isnt tied to Regional Occupation at all. You certainly dont have to agree. In contrast to your opinion, I actually care much more about having entertaining gameplay than about the lore. I think my ideas in this video would make for a very fun campaign first and foremost, and happen to tie in to the Warhammer lore very well, which is what a Warhammer game should strive for. Whether CA could or even wants to implement any of those ideas is a different matter entirely. But ultimately, What would you rather have? A truly unique race with a truly unique playstyle that isnt like any other faction in the game, or one that is perfectly balanced for an MPC campaign but regurgitates the same mechanics from Orcs and Beastmen? I know which one I'd choose.

    milkandcookiesTW i did not not agree with ur opinion about rehashing like orcs n beastman U r totaly right with that I didnt agree with the campagnemechanics you offered The teleporting of armys just seems too op, beastman and dwarfen-orcish movement is alrdy very powerfull on campagne That d be 2 much in my opinion

    This is totally unnecessary, let me do it for you. *ahem*. Lore? Boring. Army? Pitiful. Units? Weak. Tactics? Cowardly. Done.

    Wood Elves don't fight fair in battle, because their enemies don't fight fair either. When your enemy's intention is to burn your home down, kill or enslave your people, fighting fair is the last thing you want.
