I remember a quote similar to this comes to mind of a hero mentioned in the fantasy books for Warriors of Chaos. Anyone know who said it? I remember it vaguely but it was one of my favorite quotes because I could just imagine Khorne shedding a single bloody tear at such a wonderful statement, because Khorne immediately granted him an additional torso with 2 arms and another head.

If i remember correctly Ogres were also created by the Old Ones to fight Chaos, but haven't been "finished". So they should have a very strong resilience against chaos taint.

On the other hand, Chaos Warriors do have their own societies. So it wouldn't be strange to see a band of Warriors going around with their women and kids. Even Khornates have their kids. Khorne has to get new Warriors somewhere if they kill each other daily so to not make a day wasted and not everyone killy ends up worshipping Khorne. Also Chaos Dwarfs are actually somewhat of allies of theirs.

chaos-bonded armor reminds me of that episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, where Billy gets cursed armor at a renaissance fair and is desperately trying to win (or lose) different contests because he can't remove the cursed armor, which is bad because he has to use the restroom and there's no zipper.

to worship the changer of ways one only needs to change things. The greater the change the more powerful your sacrifice to the many faced god. changes like life to death or war to peace or love to hate or loathing to friendship.

interesting how close you were to the money of how chaos plays and happens. Where they just appear with full-fledged armies at certain turns. I like how they play as well with the horde being the city.

Reminder that of all the Chaos Warriors, none is as manly as Egil Styrbjorn. A Norscan so manly that even other Chaos Warriors can only dream of being this manly (he's visible on the Warriors of Chaos Army Book at the very beginning of this video).

There is just something about Anamalie and Warhammer Lore that combine to make something beautiful.

Arch, while your newest videos have of course a much better production value, I must say that I almost prefer the old ones. The old mic, the very layback feel, the music, damn I love it. Nothing better to chill out after a very long day.

A cool mechanic to have, in my opinion is that if they have a piety system, if a character have very low piety they, and their units have a chance of turning to chaos and if they do, they can go around killing and pillaging your settlements until either they or you are destroyed.

+blaster23456 They KIND of do that, but probably not in such an awesome way. As you go aorund and conquer as Chaos, Warp corruption will start to take place, which seemingly will afflict people as they start to riot more and more frequently in areas tainted by Chaos. I would imagine a Chaos cultist undercover being able to tets the faith of the people, and if you succed, they might join your army either as fellow cultists or other.

Definitely. And maybe as your generals and their armies fight and level up, they can select a Chaos God to serve and gain buffs depending, and maybe some cosmetic changes as well. Those two systems would add in so much more army customization.

+John Erlwanger Really easy question to answer. The insane murder hobos you mentioned actually help the nations and churches of the "civilized" places. The Brettonian Knight's are literally the Lord's and Nobles of Brettonia. The Warrior Priest's of Sigmar are some of the greatest defenders of the Empire, bringing some level of security to the Empire by killing the Empires foes. The Witch Hunters assist the Empire by getting rid of insane cultists, Vampires, and other assorted horrifying creatures and people. These forces are actually required to just have order in this universe.

So Varg and Skaeling murdering the Empire in Total War Warhammer is definitely not working for Chaos

You know, an open world 3rd person ARPG that blends well the PvP and PvE based on Chaos Warriors sound like an awesome idea to me, tbh. Instead of typical leveling, the game could have, for lack of the better term, 'fait points' which you distribute among the 4 gods (which you should gain trough achieving feats instead of simply grinding). How you distribute them will determine how your character will be like, so you should worship your gods properly in order to gain powers from them and watch out not to anger them because then they'll mess up your little face a bit more than you might want to. About the loot system... well, the 'economy' you described kinda fits the bill. :D I also see possible ways of allowing the player to become a daemon prince, but I wrote enough as it is. This would need to be worked on a lot, but that's the basic idea of it.

Awesome and informative video! I remember the first time I saw my first Warrior of Chaos in Heroquest. Also what are your thoughts on Warhammer: Mark of Chaos? Perhaps a brief video on it could be a project in the future?

I have always wondered about why The Vampire Counts and Chaos would be enemies. It seems like the Vamps are compatible with Slaanesh. Possibly Nurgle... but I guess the difference is, the Vampires are still rather orderly, and do seek a sort of stasis. I suppose that vampires drink their fill, and then tend to stop until they thirst again. A vampire turning to Slaanesh would quickly exhaust his supply of blood, and be bad for all the other vampires. Therefore, I can see vampires having a vested interest in stamping out Chaos.

I am a complete newcomer to the Warhammer lore, after watching this video about the chaos, it lasted me with one great question: If beastmen "are" chaos, how come they don't grow weird mutations out of their body the more they kill and please the gods? Forgive me if Arch pointed it out, but i can't see to find it in the video.

they kind of have from what I've learned. Most are already mutated since most were humans way back when the first or second chaos winds blew and they have just kind have stayed that way.

The way I see it, beastmen don't tend to get rewarded so much by Chaos because they're already horrible chaotic degenerates. Unlike humans, elves, dwarfs and the like, they don't need enticing. They're already powerful mutants, they're already filled with hate and insanity, and they'll already fight anything at the drop of a hat. That's not to say they never get rewarded though. One example is Taurox, the Brass Bull. This was a doombull who had killed hundreds, if not thousands, and made it a habit of eating anyone or anything that looked it in the eye. This pleased Khorne so much that he sent one of his heralds to offer a boon to Taurox... This herald then proceeded to make eye contact. No points for guessing what happened next. Having bitten the head off the herald however, Taurox flew into a year-long rampage across the old world, after which its body became encased in magickal brass that was near indestructible (save a weakspot in its throat, thanks to Khorne's displeasure at having killed his herald). A beastman who gains the favour of the dark gods is fucking scary.

One of the tabletop units I love is "The Khorngor". Dog like faces with magnificent hornes in khornes rune, Red armor and reddiesh brown fur :) one with a curved dragon horn ( I think it is called ) It is led by a Sharman of Khorne that nullifed magic. I painted the Shaman in brown robes with black fur and red spots on the forhead he has the mark of Khorne as he has no hornes of his own.

Could you accidentally become a Chaos warrior? Like if you were a Berserker and over did it one battle. Would that Berserker be forced to wear such armor or gain mutations?

***** Providing you are in an area with sufficient warp saturation the chaos gods can "bless" whom ever they chose, and ofc there is always the creeping corruption of chaos fks if said berserker started the enjoy the act of killing he could very easily be tempted down the path of corruption.

However the processes is often slow and agonizing as the forces of chaos manipulate your life and mind to force the fall. However that is still no. The change will not happen just from one battle. It would take time.

im a fan of khorne blood for the blood god so i would love to play as chaos but what u said about the event of the storm of chaos is cool but they did both way were chaos is a playable faction when u want to play them but make the a horde that instead of currency the get divine favor that u spend on stuff and earn by killing and pillaging and if u don't play as them they are like bandits in medieval that spawn if instability or too much chaos influence is present in ur settlement a specific time they get the storm of chaos event that may or may not fuck ur shit up depends on u and this applies if your playing as chaos so chaos stacks will span that u have to fight in place that u pillaged so u always have something to fight and keep the feeling of a chaos warrior is trying to take ur warband oh the to balance the divine favor ur troops have and upkeep cost of divine favor so u have to kill and pillage to get more to feed ur warband or warbands so thats my take blood for the blood god and skulls for the skull throne

Question: Can an individual be worshipping/pleasing the chaos gods unknowingly? Using your example of the Imperial Noble worshipping Khorne. Does the Imperial Noble have to knowingly kill in the name of Khorne, or is it all the same to Khorne, no matter who he kills in the name of?

They're unlikely to find a non-worshipper worthy of their gifts.

With the new preview of The Last Roman campaign DLC, which showed off playing as romans. Their system was that when you took a town it went to the Eastern Roman Empire (ESR) for them to manage. You would continue onwards as a more military style horde, granted your money by your benefactor ESR. Do you think that system could be applied to the Chaos and "work" for them lore wise in Total War?

Interestingly there are another race immune to the lure of chaos, according to a few lorebooks. This being the halflings. They were created just for that purpose as they cannot mutate or use magic. The winds do not "stick" so to speak. That did make them rather small and useless for combat though.

Wait I have a question. If the warriors of chaos are usually stronger faster and have better gear than the regular humans of The Empire then how is The Empire able to hold the chaos warriors back? Because you talk about Kislev being able to defeat a chaos warband even though the chaos warriors are superior in nearly every way.

There is a particularly interesting mention of "Vampires sworn to the cause of Chaos". Could anyone point me to further sources expanding on the idea? If someone happens to read comments under over 3 year old video, that is.

Maybe too, if an army of mercenaries/adventurers/knights and lords charge up north to "combat" chaos they could spawn a whole bunch of medium stacks to constantly harass an army until they are killed? So like if you send an army up there they just keep getting attacked by stacks that may not defeat them, but wear them down enough to where there are too weak to keep fighting and are destroyed. This could be used to represent the smaller war bands that roam up north?

TheBigChinaGamer If it works in Medieval, I think it will work in Warhammer. Although the best strategy against hordes is always stockpiling a fat defense in your fortressess and have a large cavalry army at your disposal.

#Arch warhammer can you do a video on sea monsters of the warhammer world,and the kraken sea?

I think the WoC settlement capture could work if there was a set goal of the champion of choas a la Archaon, to force people into choas. If chaos itself is changing that's pretty Tzeentch, right? The goal of warp across the world? The early game could be you start as a leader of a small warband, maybe of just marauders and you go around doing things to gain favor and winning battles to eventually take up the mantle of chosen champion of the gods. Your early game "buildings" are mobile marks of favor in terms of recruitment, more favor better units; working like medieval 2 pope, completely unpredictable. Then you wouldn't have enough power units to touch the south for anything more than a raid for a while. Though I like your idea of chaos being an AI faction, I also want to have my Juggernauts.

This is a good listen while painting my Warriors of Chaos. Read "Riders of the Dead" by Dan Abnet.

It's probably good to mention that while people in the Empire can, and do from time to time, worship Chaos, they mainly worship Grandfather Nurgle because of his promise of prolonged life and feeling no pain.

So Arch, or anybody else versed in the lore of Warhammer, i have a question about the depiction of chaos warriors in the total war battle against the empire. Like you said here, I was operating under the assumption that chaos armour was gifted to you by the chaos gods or looted from another slain warrior and would then bond to your flesh like a second layer of skin like the black carapace of space marines. In the battle however there were chaos warriors, proper chaos-plate wearing warriors, WITHOUT HELMETS. I can understand a marauder or something possibly missing a helmet or a brettonian levy but a chaos warrior? Is there any lore justification for this or just CA being CA?

+toetapanter9 There's possible justification for that, yeah. Particularly proud chaos warriors can detest the idea of having their head covered, because then they can't tear into people, and do... other things. Pride and inconvenience.

+toetapanter9 Well there are named heroes in the tabletop that appear to be Chaos Warriors and they certainly don't have helmets. Much like other things the bonded armour is probably non-canon for the most recent versions of Chaos Warriors. (Not the MOST recent though, as they don't exist at all :I )

This is 7 years ago and goes to show they’ve done a perfect job at reworking the warriors of chaos.

What are your thoughts on how they work in the game now that it is released?

Could it possible that they act as a horde army in the game, similar to the Mongols in medieval 2 for example

Do the lore of some canceled armies, like dogs of war, amazon woman, femirs, chaos dwarfs, etc.

for the chaos army they could make the general simple your created hero that would be interesting

Shame Norsca never became it's own faction, there was an Army List for them in White Dwarf years back... And they Do have a Blood Bowl Team... But a Norse, viking style army would be pretty awesome.

I do not think I have ever seen a single image or cinematic of regular human soldiers(not sigmar champions, etc) EVER defeating standard Chaos Warriors, like ever. Could someone explain to me how standard Empire armies are ever able to defeat chaos warbands without like a 10:1 advantage? It just seems silly to assume what is effectively a standard 1500s human army ever having a chance against an enemy whose standard unit is the Mountain from GoT inside magical armor.

Well, for starters the Empire is more technologically advanced than the Warriors of Chaos and Norscans by and large, having access to fire arms and cannons and the like. The Warriors do have those Hellcannons that fire souls, but those are rather... unstable. If we look at the historical examples the main reason things like plate armor stopped being used was due to gunpowder technology, as a single musketball could easily just go through plate armor. Granted, Chaos Plate is different from your standard steel, but the same rules probably do apply at least to a degree. Also, Chaos tends to do some rather... funny things to your head. Depending on what Chaos God you worship, it can make you mentally or emotionally unstable in a variety of ways. A Khornate Chaos Warrior may get too caught up in killing to notice the guys aiming a cannon for his face, or a Slaaneshi may be too engrossed in his hookers and blow to notice the dude with the warhammer sneaking up behind him, stuff like that.

Organized formation fighting. Even when brought toghether as a warband, warriors of chaos fight as individuals, as solitary champions each for his own glory and gain, while the empire state troops are drilled and trained to cover eachother and to never fight alone.1 to 1 of course they will loose, the problem is state troops never fight 1 to 1 with chaos warriors. Sure one dude with a spear isn't much of a threat, but 5 dudes fighting you toghether and covering eachother? You might be surprised. And the elite human regiments (like the greatswords or the knightly orders) can take on chaos warriros with decent chances at beating them in a straight up fight. Couple that with the fact chaos warriors are not exactly the pinacle of intelligence and tactics (grunt warriors not the champions and warband leaders) AND they are so arogant as to not even consider the posibility of dying to the weak southerners, and you get a recipe for weaker but disciplined troops beating the viking supermen. And then of course there's the tech. Sure miste fancy full plate with glowy rune axe of murder and rape, you are imposing as fuck. Here, eat this cannonball and these volleys of musket fire to the brain, see how tough you are with your skull vented and it's contents deposited on the dude behind you. Or blown up by rockets. Or blown up by mortars and grenades.

I have yet to play the Huns in Attila but don't they not have the ability to technically settle? Couldn't they do something similar to that with Chaos?

But the beastmen and the warriors of chaos still can work together, since they worship the same gods it would only make sence for them to at least tolerate eachother within battle, right?

The perfect chaos warrior: A noble who loves to kill enemies as much as he likes to have orgies and constantly shuffles around and purges administrative personnel causing mass squalor and thus huge plagues The gods would be very pleased

so I'm new to Warhammer so a quick question. Is a Chaos God inherently evil (or alteast darker traits, war, blood, pleasure etc etc) or could there possibly be a Chaos God of Sunshine of enough people worship the idea? I think I'm asking if a Chaos God is a name for any God created by the Warp or just the 'Evil' gods?

D Birt A chaos god is not truly evil. They present things that effect humane life like for example Slaanesh's values are perfection, pleasure an desire. Being super perfectionistic attracts Slaanesh and he/she/it will tell you how to gain power in turn for servitude.

D Birt chaos is one particular pantheon of warhammer in which there are 4 gods khorne God of violence battle war and anger (often saught by particularly warrior type chaos warriors ) then there is nurgle God of immortality and disease (often saught by those chaos followers trying to cheat death ) slaneesh God of corrupt pleasure vanity and ill delights ( an example of such things slaneesh is God of is sexuality and sadism ) slanesh folowers are typically well let's just leave that up to what you get from the idea (sorry if It's hard to explain slanesh ) as for tzeench he is God of cunning witchcraft sorcery and trickery (a norscan thief might want to join a tzeench warband ) only 4 chaos gods exist in warhammer which embody the darker traits of life and death and often bring lots of evil however there are many non chaos related Gods in warhammer chaos is just a rather more destructive pantheon that is also EVIL AND DEMONIC INHERITATLY CHAOS IS ALSO EVIL SO THATS WORTH NOTING TOO WHEN IT COMES TO LORE hence why chaos warriors bring death among the world the chaos gods are also evil as are there demons and warbands in warhammer lore

So... chos warriores are basically playing the hellish version of "Notice me senpai!" With there gods to try and get immortality...well.... Slaanesh must get plenty of attention

Youre idea about chaos warriors in TW games is really good and I agree it would have made things much more interesting. Shame that money talks and we got the stupid Chaos warrior race pack for pre-order.

What about how they did the Hun faction that never settles and gets unique "mobile" buildings.

thinking of the chaos being AI topic, could it not be both ways? have chaos as actually balanced factions, unless your are playing the campaign as any other faction, then just have them spawn insane stacks as an end game? and send everything they have south?

Pretty much the Mongols from Medieval II: Total War. It's AI and goes around conquering everything in its path. That would be the best way to use them in the game.
