Manfred, Lord of the Von Carstein Bloodline

Vlad sired many "children" but none so sneaky nor as successful as Manfred.

Mannfred was originally brought back at castle Drakenhof by a necromancer that had dragged Mannfred's bones out of the swamp. The necromancer was going to sacrifice a maiden to ressurect Mannfred, but then Gotrek and Felix showed up. Felix is annoyed, so Gotrek sliced the necromancer in half, but the ritual was powered by the necromancers own blood instead of the maidens. Mannfred is ressurected and stands naked in front of a dwarf slayer with a magical weapon. So he turns to mist and hides until Gotrek and Felix leaves.

Manfred was the second vampire fostered by Vlad von Carstein. The first was Isabella van Drak; Vlad's wife and the only thing he ever truly loved.

I prefer the story in the 5th edition Undead army book about Manfred's revival which was delivered by a necromancer servant who's family had been rounding up all of Manfred's severed body parts & some what intact corpse and then performing a specific ritual to revive him at drakenhof castle which was crash by Gotrek & Felix, killing the necromancer and freeing the young virgin girl from being sacrificed which was the final part of the ritual needed, they did not how ever stop the resurrection of Manfred as all the ritual needed to finish working was virgin blood never specifying that it needed to be from a woman and the poor necromancer had died on the ritual circle and you can see where this is going but spoilers no Gotrek doesn't get to kill Manfred in this short story

Ah Mannfred, the Darth Malak of the Vampire Counts. So cunning, so highly esteemed, and yet primarily damages his own side. A genius savant, he may know Necromancy like few others, but he is also more than a bit of an idiot. He has a gift for sabotaging his own best interests via untimely backstabbing and impulsive decisions. Who else could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, literally days before Vlad brought the Empire under the Von Carsteins' rule? Who else could eliminate most of his own bloodline, only to realize "oh shit, I'm running things by myself and have no lieutenants to back me up?" Who else could raise a legion of zombies and think "yep, the Empire and the Dwarfs will never be able to deal with these!" Pompous twit. Your informative (as usual) and entertaining (as always) video was awesome! That said, I wanted to add a bit to your lore, since I love this stuff. First off, it's "Castle Dra-ken-hof." Three syllables. Secondly, the Liber Mortis is most definitely NOT something from the hand of a Morrite. During the Black Death and Skaven invasion of the Empire, one Prince Vladimir (not the most cunning alias, but no one knew who Vlad was at that time) came to Sylvania and spoke to it's ruler, Frederick van Hal. He brought him a copy of the books of Nagash. Now Nagash's works are too advanced for almost any Necromancer to use, and only the most skilled can even understand them. Fortunately, with Vlad(imir)'s help, van Hal became exactly that. He then distilled the Nine books into one volume he called the "Liber Mortis." For a true master like Wsoran or Arkhan, this was "Necromancy for Dummies," but for anyone else it was one of the greatest works of Necromancy ever written. The Sigmarites kept a copy when they tried to stamp out the book's distribution, which is how brave Kurt III had such a thing handy. Thirdly, Mannfred's resurrection is a lot more palatable in the original Gotrek and Felix. A Necromancer named Schtillman was in the midst of the ritual to revive Mannfred. He had reached the part where he had to sacrifice a life (incidentally, the girl he chose for his victim would become Ariette Von Carstein not long afterwards) when Gotrek killed the bastard. Unfortunately, that just meant Schtillman was the sacrifice and Mannfred was restored. The story makes a lot more sense that way. Thanks for the video, and for hearing me out! (If you didn't hear me out, please disregard this message...which you already did, since you didn't hear me out.)

+SuperSonyer Short version? It did three really lousy things. 1. It killed a wonderful fantasy universe. 2. It replaced it with a boring fantasy universe. 3. It did so through a terribly written series of events, mostly built off of deus ex machinas and retcons. So many, many retcons. Characters had their personalities shift. History was re-written, and people made choices that made zero sense in light of who they are. If you are familiar with his previous work, you will be able to guess one of the key writers involved via his trademark style...

I am a bit confused now, because in Steven Saviles books it is written that Felix Mann survives Manfreds assault (or to be precise, Manfred just doesnt bother killing him). Plus he cant have taken Nagashs book, because several years later, the next grand theogonist uses that very book to drive Manfred off Altdorfs walls (book 3). Is that some kind of fluff-thing, where the author goes against the official lore by game workshop or your mistake? Though its not that important, to be honest, but im curious about wether or not Saviles books are authentic.^^"

Have you ever considered making a lore video about some of the things that was in Warhammer Online? Though I feel not everything in that game was a 100% lore friendly, there was some interesting things in that game. It was also kinda strange that everyone got a familiar character as their faction leader except the greenskins and chaos. The greenskins got this Masterblaster leader with a huge Orc and cunning goblin, while chaos got Tchar'zanek who as far as I know haven't made an appearance before that game.

I know torch and pitchforks are going to come my way in my opinion Mannfred is actually being developed well story wise in AOS in a good way. Honestly the undead from a lore stand point have been developed well in my opinion. *Begins running away from the mob* Actually according to liber necris the book written by mannfred its states vampires can come back from the dead. During the time of Neferata and Vashanesh aka vlad when vampires were first created. Vampires died many times due to rivalries etc and their servants bought them back to life to do it... again and again. Until Khemri got tried of vampire shit and decided to kill them since they were monsters.

I suspect that the book has enough risks of its own that using it is an act of desperation rather than something to be done casually. That would also explain why there aren't a bunch of copies of the book, and would also fit with the dangerous nature of magic in the Warhammer universe.

Ben Colecliffe well this is a book made to counter Nagash's books of necromancy so it would stand to reason that it takes a large amount of warp energy, however the book dose seem to have a limit on how many bodies you can send back into the ground.

I don't think this is a good representation of Mannfred, he was more cunning, backstabbing, an excellent spellcaster(the best of the Vampire Counts) and more machiavellian then Vlad. I love Vlad to, but he was more of an inspiring and charismatic leader while Mannfred was the perfect example of how a Vampire should be and act. I don't understand why plebs in the comments hate Mannfred, he's one of the greatest characters in Warhammer fantasy.
