The first match was a masterclass performance by Armenian King. At a time where almost every single match among competitive players involves Barbarian Rush builds with a maximum of 2 cavalry units, Armenian King brings 5 heavy horse, and 2 celtic slingers!! With Arverni, which is the weaker of the barbarian factions at the moment. Rushing in for a frontal charge with any cavalry is a VERY tricky tactic to master, because you need to time it with the rest of your main line just right, so your opponent's infantry don't throw a lot of their javelins at your cav while also giving your cav enough time and space to kite back, negating both your opponent's charge and enhancing the effects of your charge by weakening the enemy units right off the bat. That is why those Celtic Warriors did as well as they did against Rome's finest. In my opinion, the game was won in the first minute, when Chagatay got rear charged with his cav by the heavy horse, while also getting gen-sniped by Celtic slingers and more heavy horse. You just cannot let your enemy's cav get into your rear, because after that, even if a couple cav units slip by and hit your units in the rear, the morale penalty for attacked in the rear is the same, and it could very easily lead to a chain rout, ESPECIALLY after your general died. Sorry for the wall of text, but its very easy to get excited when someone plays so efficiently. This is exactly why I hold the player in such high regard. The battle was quick and clean and decided by the time it began. GG Not much to say about the second game, with 6 naked warriors, Chagatay lost the game before it began.

Hehe, efficient gameplay where everything is timed and works is what makes high level play so fun! The difference between an epic YOLO-charge that disorganizes and is followed up by an infantry charge and giving your opponent the victory by wasting your cavalry is measured in seconds. You can see if a player is desparately doing it, or if it's the blow to the body before the knockout. The great players in this game, when they're "on" have beautiful timing - I've seen things from Llewelin, Panda Warrior and Armenian that only can be described as computer game art in the way they're able to synchronize their units and make them enhance eachother.

Well played. When the micro is a good as yours, cavalry is essential. I rarely see good players bring only 2 cavalry, 3-5 being more the norm to back up the swords.

Haha! You massacre Chagatay Kagan's name the same way I do. Something about that combination that makes it impossible to get right. I really liked your commentary on this. Really cool of you commenting on some tournament battles, insightful comments and above all a fun commentary! I hope alot of people will enroll in tournaments after watching this and going "hm, I think I could have beaten those guys, that looked like fun". :D Oh, and by the way - the Roman infantry will get massacred by most Barbarians on flat maps, while they will do great in more dofficult terrain like on Athenai and forest maps because the devastating charge that the barbarians need will have less impact, but the units that counter sword rushes will also struggle on those maps - skrimishers, shock cavalry, elephants and chariots.

Cool! The level of competitive play in Rome 2 is nowhere near that of the more popular games, so new players can do really well if they know their basics.

Armenian king is definitely the better of the two here. Taking the initiative in both games and coming up with better builds. No surprise in the end the better player wins.

I got Rome 2 today, but I don't think I'll be joining the online battles any time soon since my strategy would be based on Zapp Brannigans Art of War. Let my naked men get surrounded so they can strike in all directions! For some reason Rome 2 doesn't favour that kind of tactic.

Chagatay Kagan (the historic) is the second son on Chengiz Khan and the eventual heir. It is spelled: CHA (like in change) GATAY (just as you do). And Kagan is the actual title of Chengiz Khan. Kagan is ruler of all khans.

thechosenonenumber Check the patch Armenian King posted. That's the location, you can also find Saves and Screenshots in this path. One trick with this path and replays is... if you forget to save a replay after the battle, you can go to that path and rename the autoseve.replay file to whateveryouwant.replay. This autosave always saves the replay of the last played battle and get's overwritten every time.

Since the factions were given, and in one round they were Polybian Rome vs Carthage and another Marian Rome vs Arverni, the players didn't have much of a choice. There is often a pick and ban system in place, so there's a good chance a player will be able to stop his opponent from using Rome if he really wants to.
