Total Solar Eclipse - 11th August 1999 (BBC Radio 1 Commentary)
Ғылым және технология
For some time I've had this clip of audio lying around which I recorded from Radio 1 from when the total solar eclipse happened back on the 11th August, 1999 and thought I'd share it. The audio features commentary from eclipse specialist Duncan Steel who describes both the "diamond ring" and corona as well as an exclusive track called "Casting A Shadow" composed and written by the Pet Shop Boys for Radio 1.
The video is there for illustrative purposes but I managed to get it synced with the audio perfectly (listen for the cheer for the first diamond ring).
I believe both the audio and video were recorded from Marazion, Penzance in Cornwall, South East England.

I have been waiting for this recording for 13 years!!!! I took a trip from Madrid, by car to Cornwall to watch the total eclipse of the sun, and I recorded partially this broadcast with a tape recorder within the speaker of our car.... I have listened my recording thousand of times...
The scream of the crowd, the fantastic trance soundtrack, the scientific narration and one of natures greatest spectacles. You get chills even now.

I was 2,5 years old but I remember a bit of it, we were watching it from our balcony and they told me I asked my father back then, when will this come again. And he told me like, well in 2135. Doesn't matter, I'm going to Spain in 2026.

I remember this well , they let us out of work so we could watch it from the car park , no cloud cover , day turned to night , it went cool and all the birds stopped tweeting , was pretty eerie , I envy those in the U.S today

i was born 1990. I saw this with 9y in 1999 in germany. The next total solar eclipse is in 2081 in germany. I'm 91 years old in 2081. I still have a chance!
I remember this so well! We weren't far away from Penzance, unfortunately didn't see the corona but we saw the shadow that they mention, and the flashes! Incredible experience. I think we will have this on the VHS we made at the time.
Got chills from this. It's an incredible experience to see it in person.
God bless those pet shop boys! can't have a proper eclipse without pet shop boys!

A great event made even better by the Pet Shop Boys' music. Just watched the partial eclipse in the UK this morning.

I got to watch this standing on the roof of the trophy factory myself, my brother and my colleagues worked at. It was a surreal experience. Over so quickly though! It's lovely to recreate that experience thanks to this wonderful video!

thanks for this! i was in wales on a campsite about 11 years old listening to this with the car windows down, and i remember all the sheep and cows on the hills thinking it was night and going to sleep! can't believe it was 13 years ago now, radio 1 was so much better back then too.
Was a special time for sure. Solar Eclipse, millennium approaching. Being a late teen / early 20's then felt very special. Was like a turning point in life. We knew it was special. Mobile phones were around but not everyone had one yet. No social media so you just lived the moment. Don't get me wrong, social media then would have meant this event was further documented but 1999/2000 was an amazing time to be a young adult.
We have a partial solar eclipse coming up in 2026 for the UK! Only 90-97% in England but 100% in Iberia. I'm 14 and I am definitely going Zaragoza, Spain to watch it. Once in a lifetime opportunity for most. My UK town, Hinckley, is only getting 91-92%.

What it was a very very very very very crazy total solar eclipse! In NO other total solar eclipse, there was a noise like this!
I was working at an Army Barracks and we were allowed to go out side and watch it! What an amazing Birthday gift! Everything went dark and The light started to come back. The light shown on a £1 coin. I was so skint! And I really fancied chocolate! That £1 coin bought me the best two choco bars of my life! I probs should have kept that pound lol
That 90s music though..:p
The 90’s really did have it all. The 90’s was the peak of humanity for me. People looked more chilled out and relaxed. Now everyone looks rushed and stressed out.
Huge earthquake hit İstanbul/Turkey after 6 days of eclipse
For those complaining on Reddit about the audio, the point of this video is the audio as it was a recording from BBC Radio 1 at the time of the eclipse in 1999. If they stayed quiet for the event, it'd make pretty poor radio! If you want to view the original footage I used, with the original TV audio, you can find that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmpmuMGHeZDIfJM.html
