TOTAL Crash and BURN | London Marathon 2024

Спорт

The 2024 London Marathon was supposed to be my A road race for the year. I was going to train hard for 12 weeks and bang out another sub 3 hour run and hopefully get a PB. But life doesn't always follow the script and I was unwell for weeks at the beginning of the year.
So this year's London Marathon would be the best I could do under the circumstances. It still doesn't make it any easier and the regret of those lost weeks is painful and real in the final analysis.

'I got out exactly what I put in.' You know what? I think it's actually very refreshing that you didn't sugarcoat it. No positivity running guru hubris, no dressing up a race that simply sucked to fit a certain narrative for KZread... you just gave it to us the way it was. People need to see what it means to fail, because we will all dissapoint ourselves at some point. It's about what you do with that, how it motivates you, how you hold yourself accountable. We know what you can do and we know you will be back at it. That motivates me to work harder as well. Thanks!

Great video! I can't believe how close we were along the course. I see myself several times and recognize people that I saw as well, but I didn't recognize you. But now I know who you are! Well done in the end, marathons are so tough, as we know. I'm going to watch your Brighton vlog now.😂

Great video! I ran it in 3h37m. Was comfortably on course for sub 3h30m but hit that wall hard around the 20mile/32km mark. It was an amazing experience, awesome crowds and have come away with some fantastic memories. This has only made me more determined to get that sub 3h30m next time and ultimately work towards that sub 3h target.

Well done on gritting your teeth and carrying on. Oh I know how you feel, my training block was hampered with illness, then sprained my ankle, then my groin. I had about 9 weeks of hardly any running. I did bike, swim and use the elliptical to keep the fitness up. I nearly didn’t do the marathon at all, but my partner convinced me to go but just to enjoy it with no time in mind. I had to be like you and go out conservatively as I had no clue on my actual fitness level. In the end I ran well but the groin strain came back and had cramp at 25 miles, I just missed out on a GFA time which is a shame but I’m super proud I finished it. It’s my first ever marathon and I absolutely loved the atmosphere, it spurs you on all the way.

Nice video. I completed the London marathon for the first time last weekend. I was aiming to finally hit sub 4 hours after my previous Brighton and Manchester attempts. I had been getting PB on my half-marathons and stuck to my game plan. I took almost 25 minutes off my previous PB and got 3:36. I felt good, no wall, no pains, blisters, etc. Felt like I had prepared properly and learned from other runs. I actually felt I could have gone faster as I was doing a lot of weaving in and out and met a few bottlenecks and crowded, narrow parts of the course which threw me off my stride. I loved London, the crowds really do push you through, so loud, and seeing my biggest fan (fiancee) 3 times around the course in places I didn't expect to see her really got the adrenaline going. Great video and hopefully next year you get to run your perfect race.

We must have been very close, yellow start, wave 2. And I finished in 3:19. Not sure I agree with ‘you get out what you put in’. I had a brilliant training block but on the day it just didn’t work. My first London and I’m not sure I would go back. I had a far more enjoyable time at the North Dorset Village Marathon last year. Great video though, you really summed up London and running.

Well done Stephen. You may have run out of steam but you did better than I did at pacing. I got a half marathon PB which is never a good sign on a marathon and then slowed far more than you on the second half. Still got the marathon PB I was after by 5 mins so I'm very happy with that (and also finished 1 minute faster than you so I'm happy with that too 😉). I do wonder what I could have done if I got my pacing better. The first half was just so easy where as the second half was agony.

Really enjoyed that Stephen. I’ve been ultra training with very little speed work. 2 weeks illness in December and 4 weeks off with injury February / March meant my 4:27 was a lot more tiring than I’d planned. But wow! @FilmMyRun so. Tip number 1) find the sports drink that agrees with you. Get one of those 500ml soft flasks. Put triple concentrate of the sports drink powder or tables into the flask and fill with water. Then when you approach every aid station...take a small mouthful of the energy drink, and grab a cup of water and drink that back. This way you always have your tried and tested sports drink. Tip 2 you are running so fast you don't need many gels but you absolutely have to use them. A banana is no good in an actual fast marathon run. You and I are the same age. We loved school dinners. Try torq apple crumble and rhubarb and custard gels. They honestly taste great. So have your porridge or bagel 2 hours before race time. Then have a gel 5 mins before the start. Then every 45 mins. 5 gels for you max. Do the last one with caffeine. I promise you. You will kill your next race doing this. A man of your experience and talent should never be hotting the wall. Good luck

meh, woulda, coulda, shoulda. You did what you could on the day and be proud of that. I feel the same way about Strava as you do about gels. Not required and pointless unless , I've never been on it. I know what I have and haven't done. I have not been right since Arc and wasn't stellar before that. It's been a crap year so for but SDW100 in 6wks is looming. No doubt I'll get what I deserve, so at least I'll be in good company 😁

Hi Vanessa, no I don’t take gels. I usually have something like half a banana at 17-20 miles and a swig or two of cola. But I feel like it hindered me this time more than helped. Gels would make me puke. It’s just a lack of training Vanessa that’s all.

@@FilmMyRun .I'm not a great lovers of them .but I have taken Dextro Energy liquid gel.that has a screw cap.. So you can take as much or little as you want. I took just one on a marathon once that was enough for me.
