All these years later, this performance still brings tears to my eyes. It was the most beautiful performance in ice dancing then and it still is now. Beautiful.

It's truly incredible

They changed the sport forever. Ice dancing before them was considered old fashioned and quaint and was largely ignored, with audiences going more for the athleticism and spectacle of figure skating.Then came Torville and Dean with this astounding, daring, sensual, and highly artistic routine. No one had ever seen anything like that before 1984, and they made headlines all across the world. Their routine was replayed on TV countless times-- WAY before the age of the internet. I was a young girl in 84, and I was completely blown away, as was my mom when we watched it together. I haven't seen this in decades, and it's still as mesmerizing as the first time I saw it.

I don't know if it was considered "old fashioned and quaint" before Torville and Dean. My mom and I have followed skating all my life and I was in my last year of High School when this happened, so I'd seen a LOT of skating prior. There were always fun, interesting ice dancing interpretations, but these two took it to a whole 'nother level. The repetitive nature of the music, "Bolero", required them to know their routine w/o listening to the music, only acknowledging the beat. That takes a TON of mental skill as well as the elements that require physical skill. Their perfect execution of an intricate and difficult program was what catapulted them into the stratosphere for which they are still remembered today.

We knew this was special when we first saw its as a family. My mother, when ill, hallucinated Torvill & Dean dancing along the room wall. I am amazed seeing this again how elegant, smooth and frankly superb and perfect it was, and I had remembered many of the moves and elegance of it. Such trust and bond between them, it's a wonder they didn't marry. Jolly well done to them, gave a lot of pleasure.

No pointless skating around the ring; every second is filled with beautifully choreographed and flawlessly executed moves. It was emotional perfection. 👍

I remember being amazed when I saw this in 1984, but I'd forgotten just how breathtaking it was. So glad to have seen it again.

Wasn't born then, and comparing this to 2022, it's still absolutely stunning. Even with all the tricks today, I haven't seen a couple so perfectly in sync and what they did does not appear that easy in comparison to today's standard either. Well deserved.

@nikkif4706 i wasn't born in 84 either but my mum remembers Torvill and Dean winning for bolero. Shes a ice skating fan anyway and they've got new fans all thanks to dancing on ice. My mum watched Robin Cousins Karen Barber and Nicky Slater skating then i watched them on DOI

Fun fact: they cheated a wee bit with the music. The segment from Bolero (4 mins 28) was too long to fit the time allowed for the skate (4 minutes), but neither could it be abridged successfully and keep the tempo. So they trawled the rule book and found when the clock officially started, which was when the blades touch the ice. So for the first 30 seconds, the actual blades are kept clear. The judging and the clock start the moment Torvill's lowered onto her feet, giving them 4 minutes to skate and blow the world away.

It's still iconic. Anyone who doesn't get it or doesn't appreciate it need to be on their way. These two put so much heart, creativity, grace and depth into this performance

I agree, Jayne and Chris were and still are the best ice dancers the world has ever had and will ever have. Others have been good but nobody, absolutely NOBODY will ever beat them and this routine. Watching it in 2024 I feel as emotional as I did watching it live in 1984. This I'm sure 🎉will still be getting watched in another 40 years and will still be fantastic then.

2024...brings me back to when I was 15 and my mom, a dance instructor, said she would kill us (my brother also) if we spoke during this performance. No chance dear mom, we were equally captivated. ❤

No matter how many times I have watched this performance it still gives me chills ! While todays skaters are extremely talented I’ve yet to see anyone come close to the beauty, elegance, interpretation, and perfection that Torvill and Dean brought to the ice so many years ago.

I have never, ever seen two people so in sync. In dance, in skating, in anything.

I loved watching this. What you have to remember is how different it was at the time. Nobody skated to just one piece of music or told a story. It really changed ice dancing. It was a masterpiece.

I remember watching this in 1984 and still today I found myself holding my breath. WOW

I agree with you. I think I held my breath for the 4-minute performances well. And you noticed that no one clapped during the performance because it was just so captivating it took you on a ride emotional ride and told a story.

2022 and this performance is outstanding-perfection.

I had the IMMENSE pleasure and privilege of watching this play out live as it was happening. I was awestruck and it made me cry! To this day I cannot hear Bolero without thinking of Torvill and Dean!

I remember seeing this on TV when it happened 39 years ago. I will never forget it as the finest example of 2 people being in perfect sync. Two people acting as one. I will always think of Jane and Dean being the best of the best for all this time. Fantastic. I was a pleasure that will be never be replaced. Thank you.

I remember watching this and thinking that no one would ever top this performance, and all these years later I don't believe anyone has....absolute magic .

38 years ago you would think it was yesterday

Just turned 64. I was 24 when I saw this performance during the Olympics. 40 years later, I still sit with my head in my hands, in awe.🫶🫶

I'm a rough arse builder and I've watched this 100 times. I remember watching it when they won 🏆

No one will ever skate like these two

Back when artistry and choreography were as important as jumps. Now all we see is endless jumps and setting up for them. I really miss the performances with stories and emotion like we saw 10-20 years ago.

Torvill and Dean's sport was ice dance, not figure skating. They are not allowed to do jumps and the lifts are strictly regulated. In the same era the figure skaters would be doing triple-triples or triple-doubles in their routines.

It is this day as it was in 1984 - thrilling, beautiful, moving, flawless. There was a grace & dignity, as well as strength and beauty, to the performance these two wonderful artists gave. It was and still is stunning.

I’m now 83 years old and remember how touched my husband and were watching this epic skating experience . Not just the beautiful skating but the incredible passion and emotional closeness of of Torvil and Dean.

Remember watching this 'live' at the time and you didn't need know anything about ice skating to see you were watching something pretty special.

That's exactly what felt when I watched it on tv. I didn"t know anything about ice scating but it was usual to watch the competitions on tv year after year. I used to like it but that time it was different. I was shaken ny the music and the beuty of the performance. You would say the music jad been composed for.them.to scate to it. I immediately knew I had witnessed something unique. Theirs are the only icekaters names I remember. They changed the iceskating world.

Without a doubt their performance was then, and stands today as absolutely the most romantic, most sensual dance ever completed on ice anywhere in the world. Truly the greatest ice skating duo of all time. Perfection personified.

I've watched the Olympics every year and these are the only skaters I remember. Now I know why.

I'm 53 years old and I still get a lump in my throat watching it. Just perfect

I remember watching this live. They stopped the world with their performance. No one had ever seen anything like it before. And dare I say, since.

36 years later and it still gives one chills watching this performance. One never tires of seeing perfection.

2022 and it is still an awesome performance.

Even after having seen this numerous times, I'm still entranced by their elegance and precision

40 years later it is still a magnificent performance.

I clearly remember watching them and they were all about using their athleticsm to show light as air artistry.They skated as one and they seemed to fly effortlessly through the air. Their routine did not rely on tricks and multi-spin jumps as ice dancers and other figure skaters have been forced to adopt to present themselves today.Such a treat to see Torville and Dean once again!

Just pointing out, ice dance and figure skating are separate sports. Ice dance does not incorporate spins and jumps, and never has. I think you might be conflating the two sports. The ice dance winners at the 2022 Olympics were Gabriella Papadakis and Guilliame Cizeron of France, and the figure skating winners were Sui Wengjiang and Han Cong of China. It's worth looking their performances up to see the difference in the two sports.

Never, ever, will there be a better ice dancing performance.

"What can one say?" The ice dancing couple and the ice dance that changed the sport forever. Still getting chill from watching.

Torvill aged 64 and Dean aged 63 still skate like a couple of youngters, they're amazing

Been a hard rugby player all my life but this is the greatest sporting performance of all time.

I love how the commentators just stayed quiet and let the viewing audience just enjoy this beautiful performance. I wish they’d do that for every skating performance. Oh and Torville and Dean completely made Bolero their music. Whenever you hear it you think of them right away!

This is one of the few skating performances I have ever seen that gives me goosebumps over and over again. Absolute perfection.

It was the most stunning performance I have ever seen, now almost 40 years later it remains the all time classic!

They were brilliant. To my knowledge there hasn't been an ice dancing duo to beat them. They are still GB's greatest ever ice dance duo

Hypnotic. This is perfection. Ice dance became an art form with this skate program and has never been achieved since that day.

That era of figure skating was so amazing.

I saw this in 1984 and it was absolutely breathtaking. Watching it again today it is still as breathtaking. Skating ; along with many other sports, has changed but not necessarily for the better IMO

Besides their outstanding performance the thing I like best is the lack of skating “expert” commentators yapping endlessly during the entire performance as we have to listen to today! Beautiful performance and no distractions!

The world certainly isn't sane now, but if you think it WAS sane back then, I have a feeling it's probably your nostalgia talking. But this is a beautiful routine, I'm with you there!

The whole of Britain held its breath when this was televised. Stunning performance

Their performance is still iconic. Notice what this also has over performances today? No commentator talking while they performed. I've contacted the stations to ask that no one speak during a performance but they ignore it. They need to watch this and see how much better it is, how superior an experience, without announcers yattering throughout.

I so agree! I was watching my fav cooking vlog…this Asian woman has the most infectious laughter, the cutest giggle…her mom has a hilarious-attitude….someone on their production team (*I think I know his name), started adding music….NOOOOOoooo! I said please NOooooo! Please “____”, I can’t hear her words or giggles! I remembered his name from a prior vlog, so I used his name….I don’t know if he stopped permanently or not, but, I watch daily.

I have loved them from the beginning. I watched this in 1984 and was mesmerized then, but even more today. They are the best ice dancers ever!

To this day no one has surpassed this wonderful performance.

37 years later, it is still the best I have ever seen on ice.

Hard to believe this was almost 4 decades ago. I remember it as if it were yesterday. No much how better any since might seem they cannot be better, because This pair broke the mold and set a far higher bar. All that have come since have ultimately been because of them. They set the style. They are the true and only originals.

38yrs later and noone has surpassed this amazing performance from Torvill & Dean - Bolero

Not to take away from Torvill and Dean but when it comes to Russian ice skaters no one can surpass them ,It’s a known fact that the judges were always very unfair to them especially before 1990 during Communist era when in fact Russian had the best training technically and especially artistically.

@@jennymoore2083 I know this for a fact ,the judges always wanted to “ punish “ athletes behind the iron curtain mainly the Russians .If you watch scores you will see the discrepancy. The West always had a problem with the Russians despite the fact that Comunist Russia produced the best ballet,ballroom dancing and ice skaters in the world . The artistry of Russians is like no other .

I remember the live broadcast. This was a breathtaking performance. Still is. Set a whole new standard for the sport.

I will never hear "Bolero" and not think of Torvill/Dean.

2021 and I can still remember seeing this as it happened and I was spellbound then as I am now. The best routine the World has ever seen, nobody could beat that, impeccable timing, so much emotion in their movements and so beautifully executed. 😍 ❤💯🙏

I just watched this again. And I’m still astounded. They danced on ice . Still the best ever ever. Truly the GOAT.

i wonder if any pair of skaters today can duplicate the moves they invented. and all done seamlessly - effortlessly. a true work of art for all time!

I'm sure I had known of Bolero previously, but this performance burnt it into my brain and has been my favourite classical piece ever since.

I've been watching this freestyle since 1984 on Valentine's Day, ( the day they became Olympic champions with 9 x 6,0 ). 38 years later this is still as stunning as it was then....And the Bolero I listen at least once a week.....

I remembered this routine and indeed it was the most outstanding skate that I have ever seen. I loved the drama in the rhythm of Bolero. What wonderful choreography!

I was 8 and still remember this so well. 🇬🇧

I remember watching at my grannie' s house. I would have been 9. This is still one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever seen. I feel privileged to have seen it.

I saw this at the time but I am even more impressed today. Their interpretation of the music can only be described as perfect. Has there EVER been a more impressive skating pair? Truly joyful to watch.

Watching it again on valentines day 2022. It's timeless .

They not only won Gold but became the highest-scoring figure skaters of all time for a single programme, receiving x12 perfect 6.0s!!!

I remember watching this when I was14 yrs old. They killed it. Their transitions were so smooth, pure artistry. I had loved Torviill and Dean before this performance but after this I really fell for them. They deserved this top honor.

Fun fact: they could only condense the piece to 4 1/2 minutes but skate time of only 4 minutes was allowed. That’s why their skates didn’t touch the ice for first 30 seconds 😉

I remember watching this as a small girl and being completely mesmerised...... true artistry. Still as good 40 years on !

I SAW THIS ON TV WHEN THEY DID IT ORIGINALLY AND EVEN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS IT IS STILL THRILLING TO WATCH THEM....SHEER PERFECTION

They simply kept one hand on each other the entire performance. It was as if they were intertwined. It was a fantastic routine.
