i had a hard time learning this in school. I wish they had a animation like this. Thank you DLM

I was looking for this a few years ago, it is nice to see that somebody took the time to make it. Visualizing how these ubiquitous devices work is not so easy, a cutout or plexiglass view might be helpful. In the end it is elegantly simple.

Notes: 1:20 need to explain the purpose of the guide ring, probably has to do with separating the return flow 2:17 the axial cutout view is badly explained, heck it is not even described as being an axial cutout view. How are we supposed to guess? 4:30 the lockup clutch is a piston that presses against the "front cover" (really, *front* cover??), and not a plate clutch, apparently.

And yet you watched it all the way through to comment. Thank you very much. The guide ring function is pretty obvious showing that it helps to separate the fluid flow. I didn't say that it reduces turbulent by keeping the fluid form banging into itself. I could have added that but it's not super critical and I'm trying to keep the video as short as possible and still informative. If a viewer has zero clue about a converter then yes they will be lost that this is an animated axial cutout. The video is not designed for the totally clueless. It's more for those who have some sense of a converter but never really understood how it works or converts torque. The term front cover is straight from a Toyota training manual. The lockup piston does not press against a plate or a clutch. The lockup piston presses against the front part of the converter housing hence the term front cover. Yes, there are other terms that can be used just like in many things in life as well in automotive.

Great video. Pronounced “turban” not “turbyne.”

I have heard it pronounced both ways but if you lookup Turban it is defined as a headdress. If you look up Turbine you get a "A turbine is a device that harnesses the kinetic energy of some fluid - such as water, steam, air, or combustion gases - and turns this into the rotational motion of the device itself." ( energyeducation.ca/encyclopedia/Turbine ) Based on this information I prefer to use Turbine as my pronunciation.
