Ep. 2 Torque Converters 101: Lock-Up Torque Converters

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this episode, we're discussing lock-up torque converters relative to original OEM design and function, as well as how the aftermarket has adapted and improved upon this OEM technology. We will be taking a deeper dive into drag racing-specific torque converters in a future episode, as the technology, function, and operation is a bit different as compared to OEM technology and function. Please be sure to subscribe to our channel, like, and share our videos. Thanks for watching!!

I have a 2,800 stall in my Art Carr 200-4r behind 502 with HD solenoid and manual switch which will lock it on the freeway, but when I switch it off on offramp, it doesn't disengage until several surges and drop below 40mph. I may need to get an aftermarket TC.

I have a question, only info I've been able to find is on forums which can sometimes be questionable info. Basically, the cam I've got my eye on recommends a 2600-2800 stall speed. Now I've been told by almost everyone I ask that your highway cruising rpm should be higher then your stall speed BUT I've also been told that a good lockup converter will compensate for it and be fine to run in a street/strip/daily driver combo. So are they ok to run that way and not run too hot or limit the converter life? Cruising RPM would be around 2000-2200 BTW if that's important. Apologies for the lengthy question.

Great stuff. I have an RPM built 4l60e tranny that I have dialed in for the apply and release. It was perfect until a shop rebuilt the engine. After recieving the car back, the clutch will unlock when it shouldn't on the highway at say 4th gear at 70MPH when the load decreases or I ease up on the throttle. Could something have been damaged?

Hello, saw your video on lock up converters, I have a 1955 Chevy truck 265 engine with a 700R trans. I have a B&M dial box controller. What would be the best speed to dial the knob on the box to lock out the converter. Right now I’m setting the dial at about 40mph when the green light on the box comes on meaning the converter is locked up, would this be correct? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Len

I have a 37 foot rv with a tag axle, 4l80e powered by a gas 454 tbi, dual 2.5 hedders. I will be getting the transmission rebuilt soon. Since I will be towing with my 17k RV will I need the triple disc XTM converter? Will it tear up my transmission? Or should a just settle with the XTM single disc converter. When I call into Hughes Performance one technician says go with the single XTM single disc because the triple disc is for a deseil engine which is high torque, and the other technician says go with the 25Blxtm that it will not tear up the transmission. So, for once and for all, what is the verdict? Thanks.

@Hughes performance, I have a 4 speed automatic transmission and I notice lock-up of TCC happens at 40 mph on the overdrive gear. I do cruising speed in the city at less than this and it causes poor fuel efficiency. I would like to make a manual switch for the TCC that i can lock it at lower gears as long as it is past stall speed. . . Is there any problems with doing this? Is shifting from 3rd to 4th gear alright while TCC is locked up?

just a guess. sounds like someone hooked up the 3 gear pressure switch into the tcc. if you have a 4 gear external port outside your tranny case. hook up a pressure gauge n run it inside the cab. watch the pressure value as the vehical shifts into 4th. on the freeway at say 65 mph see what the value is. then buy a pressure switch closest to that. thats when it will lock up for you. more work for sure. better outcome. just sayin.. larry

I always thought that it is the line pressure coming from the solenoid and valve body that engages lockup clutch in my oem torque converter but obviously i was wrong. Great video series very educational i love it. Do you guys do any ZF transmission parts or torque converters ?

We can build a ZF torque converter for higher stall speeds and can also incorporate some features to increase the converter strength. We just need your converter core to build.

Yes sir, any converter with an active stator is capable of achieving a reasonably efficient part throttle coupling when properly matched to the appropriate engine modifications, axle ratio, and tire sizing.

Not all apply strategys are the same. At 8:50 you say that the clutch is not applied by pressure but rather by natural internal forces. The stock 4L60E does indeed have apply oil supplied from the pump and between the hub shaft and the stator shaft.

I keep trying to think of a best of both worlds design combining the advantages of an auto with the advantages of a manual. As a daily I can't drive auto cars because they are so boring I start to stop paying attention and I kinda go into a brain fog, sometimes falling asleep (happened twice, second time I got in a crash) which is why I drive manuals now. But I understand the advantages to an auto for racing. I used to argue against that for a long time but I'm drag racing an auto wins hands down. I'm on the fence for any other racing. I still can't think of anything where you have complete mechanical control over the trans but can shift immediately with an auto. So I'm still sticking to manual vehicles. Oh, an auto can't bump start yet. Yes I've utilized this many times. For me, the perfect setup would be 1- manual clutch control. 2- manual gear control (no shifting when you don't want to). 3- instant gear changes. And that's it. The trick is instant gear changes while having manual clutch control. Big advantage to a torque converter is stop and go traffic on the highway. So it's a constant back and forth between the two for me.

It will lock in 3rd as well as long as its above the speed that the computer is telling it to lock. In D it is usually after its shifted into 4th tho. You generally have to have it manually in 3rd for it to lock up because of the speeds its programmed to shift at.

Why do so many smaller displacement engines making well over 1,000HP have a recommendation to not run a Lock Up Converter? I've heard of guys in the 2JZ world that engage the lockup 400rpm too soon and it can completely grenade a Billet Block. Why is that? how can just engaging a Lockup a few hundred RPM too soon send Billet Rods through a solid Billet Block? I've also heard the same in the Chevy LS world. So why?
