Great information on torque converter one-way clutches (sprag)... This why I've already bought 1 Hughes torque converter and my next one will also be a Hughes. Thank you very much...

I have to second that, Hammerhead. I found it very useful to know the sprag clutch can be felt to operate in one direction. I just took out mine from my non-running car and sure enough it rotates in both directions. And another I have works correctly. Diagnosis Positive. So, much thanks.

Thanks! this helps me to understand deeply the function of the Stators one-way clutch inside of a converter.😊👌🏼

Thanks! Long time garage hobby mechanic, went into engines, etc. never knew exactly what could fail into a torque converter. Automatic transmission, it's obvious - clutches, solenoids, etc. Torque converters are so simple, always wondered. Thanks! Compliments on the demonstrated deep knowledge and understanding on the matter. I would like to know what causes the rough 2-3 shift in 6F55 behind 3.0 ecoboost at lery low acceleration or accelerator let off at 13-14 mph. - you asked :D

Is there such thing as a spragueless converter with a lockup function to keep the heat down?

Thanks for commenting!! It is possible to build a lock-up torque converter as a spragless model, but unless this type of converter is being used in a dedicated drag racing application where the duration of usage is very short, the converter would still overheat due to the fluid shearing happening between the impeller, stator, and turbine even when the lock-up clutch(es) were applied.

How about info about 10”-11” 2800-3600 rpm stall and which does what and you can expect from each to give people an idea of where to start,I would think this a popular area of though

Thank you very much. My Mercedes 722.1 gear must have a problem with the stator clutch, as it takes time to pressurize. The stator must be trapped by the clutch.

I have a question. I have been trying to diagnose a loss of low end power. Is it possible to sieze the one way clutch, what would that look like? I was accelerating from a stop when the power loss occured. I've tested everything I can. The trans fluid was changed 2 months ago, had to do it again today. It was getting dark again. No chunks on the magnet. Edit: 99 ram 5.9 gas 46re

What can a symptom of a failed stator sprag be? My trans(5R55s) in a Mazda Diesel Ute here in Australia is acting up. When stopped and in gear(any gear or reverse) is wants to creep really badly and almost stall. It also has a slight whistle noise as well. The stall speed has dramatically lowered to virtually non existent (used to be around 2600rpm) and feels as though it have no torque multiplication ant all!! It changes gear perfectly and the lock up clutch engages and disengages as is should.

Everything you've described points towards a sprag failure inside the stator 100%!!

I wonder whether I should buy a new TC or go with the used one I have? Having driven stick mostly I am not familiar with the ways of automatics. I remember that back in the dark ages of the 50's the big economic threats were the ball joint and the torque converter. Would I be looking for trouble to install a used one? The one way clutch works and the TC never gave any trouble in use. Or is a TC more or less a wear item? If so, are re-builts reliable. ?

A used torque converter is always going to be a bit of a gamble. If you know the history of the torque converter and know that it's a good match for your combination then you'll probably be okay re-using it. If you don't know the history of the converter then you should really send it to the converter manufacturer of your choice for disassembly, inspection, and freshening. You don't want to risk damaging your transmission with an unknown component.
