Tormek T-8 sharpening system: Getting Started with Alan Holtham
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Alan Holtham, English woodturner and journalist, shows you step by step how to get started and use the Tormek T-8 sharpening system.
Learn how to:
• Use the jigs included with the Tormek T-8.
• Mount and dismount the grindstone on the machine.
• Apply oil and honing compound on a new leather honing wheel.
• Sharpening with water and why it’s important.
• Use the scraper to clean the water trough.
• Use the Stone Grader to adjust the grindstone to a finer surface, and back again.
• Use the Truing Tool to make your stone round and flat, if needed.
• Use the “marker method” to repeat an exciting edge angle.

Alan, excellent video very informative. Thank you. I just bought my first Tormek T8 Black. It would be great if you can do a video using the T8 Black. It's a bit different as I understand it. Diamond wheel won't wear off, Leather does not need honing compound and also water need anti rust fluid. So if I tip my water out everyday then I need a lot of anti rust fluid or should I just lower the water trough down?

Hi there! Happy to hear, welcome to the Tormek family! Here's a link to a video about the Tormek T-8 Black: kzread.infoLQ3gcUhk29U?si=l7i_i1QGLZGP2H9C You can reuse the water mixed with ACC-150 Anti Corrosion Concentrate, just make sure to lower your water trough so that your diamond wheel doesn't rest in it. Let us know at support@tormek.se if you need any help going forward. Good luck, and stay sharp! /Hugo from Tormek

If I only have $200 but I want something like this what can the market offer?
Hmmm wonder if I could get one of the jigs to clamp onto a longsword...
@matthewpipoly
5 жыл бұрын
I think you could use the long knife jig and you'd just have to sharpen like 8 inches at a time and keep moving the jig down the blade until you reach the tip.
Alan is very knowledgeable about the T8 that’s for sure. Honing the flat back of a woodworking chisel is really bad advice. It’s better to keep that part for a good flat stone.
Greetings Alan. I have just purchased my T8 and I have a Q For you. When one has finished using the wheel for the day What is the drying procedure as I intend to take the wheel off each time I use it. I have a small heater in the workshop so no problem with frost or low temperature. Really like the video have liked and subbed to this channel. look forward to seeing more. Many thanks.

How to order sir
I rarely see anyone using the Tormek in an edge trailing scenario. It that because it is not recommended or is the sharpening factor affected? I experienced a stone catch by the blade in the common edge leading configuration. I managed not to get cut but it would have been a disaster considering a very sharp blade and fingers all over the jig and blade.
@TormekSharpening
2 ай бұрын
Hej K3Fyguy, the quality of the cutting edge is much better when edge leading compared to edge trailing due the fact that the burr is much finer and easier to hone away. You have also better control over the alignment of the blade on the stones surface, because you can easily see ow the water runs over the blade. Important is only to have a steady pressure forward and therefore automatically down on the universal support. Just check our Live Sharpening Classes for all the finer details for your to succeed with your sharpening. kzread.info/head/PLGpQjduHna4DOfmVeoXe0J9J9dEEqU0UN //Wolfgang
Where to buy in india ?
I’m having a very big issue with my T-8. The gear that drives the water holder fell out of place and I had a hell of a time getting at it. I am now in a position where I had to takeoff the bottom blue cover plate to access the issue and try to take out the switch and just cause even more problems. I have a feeling I may have broken the switch itself. Is there an email address I can send pictures of my situation to and or if I need this to be repaired, who in the 60194 area code can do this for me? Ty. Michael

Hej Michael, can you please write an email to support@tormek.se, explaining your problem and sending photos? Thank you!
The thing I don’t understand is how you get your chisels sharp using only 1 grit? Or are you expected to buy multiple wheels and go through the grits?
@TormekSharpening
Жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, Great question! What grits you might need to go through is of course dependant of the condition your tool is in. The SG-250 Original Grindstone has adjustable sharpening characteristics equivalent to between 220-1000 grit, using the SP-650 Stone Grader. After sharpening, you deburr and polish the edge on the LA-220 Leather Honing Wheel with our PA-70 Honing Compound, which has some, super fine, abrasive medium as well. You can read up on all of these products on our web, and I'd recommend starting with our grinding wheels, since that seems to be your interest: tormek.com/en/knowledge/the-tormek-way-of-sharpening/grinding-wheels-guide All products mentioned above is included with the Tormek T-8 Original by the way. Hope this was helpful. Stay sharp! /Hugo and the Tormek team

Bought the T-8, read the manual, viewed the videos. All My chisels end up with an angle, not 1 is 90°. I've tried to adjust the micro adjust nobs, lined up the lines on the SE-77 but nothing works. Hi Brian! We have just upgraded our knife jigs to be self centering. They are now KJ-45 Centering Knife Jig (www.tormek.com/international/en/grinding-jigs/kj-45-centering-knife-jig/) and KJ-140 Wide Centering Knife Jig (www.tormek.com/international/en/grinding-jigs/kj-140-wide-centering-knife-jig/). The jig for scissors sharpening is SVX-150 Scissors Jig (www.tormek.com/international/en/grinding-jigs/svx-150-scissors-jig/). Does the t8 give a hollowed edge???
@TormekSharpening
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it gives a slightly hollow edge, although we talk about extremely small differences. For example, when you sharpen a knife with a 2 mm bevel with a 250 mm grindstone (T-8) you'll get a concavity that is less than 0,005 mm. To get a completely flat grind you can use our Diamond Wheels and sharpen on the side of the wheel. Watch this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYZ1w5qGcZC0opM.html

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm kzread.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.
