Tori Amos - Reindeer King (Lyric Video)

Native Invader is an intense feast of melody, protest, tenderness and pain. In the summer of 2016, Tori took a road trip through North Carolina's Smoky Mountains. The intention was to reconnect with the stories and songlines of her mother's family, who were from the North Carolina and Tennessee Smoky Mountain area. That winter, two seismic events knocked the plan off its axis. The fall out from the US Election. And in January her mother, Maryellen Amos, suffered a severe stroke leaving her unable to speak.
The complex influence of America's alt-right Super PACs, lobbyists and think tanks informs much of the tension in Native Invader. "It wasn't going to be a record of pain, blood and bone when I began," Tori says. "It wasn't going to be a record of division. But the Muses 9 insisted that I listened and watched the conflicts that were traumatizing the nation and write about those raw emotions. Hopefully people will find strength and resilience within the songs to give them the energy to survive the storms that we are currently in". The sense of semantic distortion permeates Native Invader. Tori talks of the need to form a "militia of the mind" in the face of national lies.

I had discovered that I had developed a chameleonic mindset when I was younger which observed and took on all the qualities and characteristics I had perceived as "good", I had stitched them together into a seemingly single identity. I realise now I was so far removed from myself and that I had divided my mind so severely that I had completely forgotten myself outside of this mental Frankensteinian creation, constantly flicking between different personalities I had created, like an unknowingly self-created multiple personality disorder. I'm in the process of letting go of everything that isn't me and rediscovering who I once was, getting myself back to me in other words. I should have just been myself all along but even this intense suffering is just a part of the journey and if anything is still a miracle to be able to have experienced. Please look after yourselves people, your mental wellbeing is paramount. May everyone discover inner peace and love. Thank you Tori for your music which pointed me in the right direction when I was so overwhelmingly lost within my creation.

This song made my nose tingle like it does just before a sneeze; always the precursor to tears. The piano chords lull me to the bottom of the sea, not to drown, but to reanimate. This is a calm invigoration; a tonic for the soul.

So typical of Tori... a track that is fuzzy, dreamy, trippy, and one that takes me on journey... an experience in sound, voice, lyrics, vocals & visions... Together with a lot of depth, inspiration, mysticism & mystery that lets each listener have their own interpretation... Thanks Tori for another dream sound!

Tori's passionate straining vocal, strong musicality from the piano marching through the story and a tsunami of raw passion. One of my favourite Tori songs ever. Reindeer King reminds me a lot of Kate Bush's 50 Words for Snow album. (She talked about how Kate is capable of creating sonic paintings for listeners to walk into in Kate Bush's documentary and now she has finally been able to do the same, in a very long time) It is patient, wise, mysterious and haunting. Although it is 7 minutes long, not a single second feels superfluous, and the string arrangement helps to add a lugubrious yet majestic undertone to it. It contains the sort of wisdom that only an older woman can conjure up. It's as if the red-haired fairy has transformed into a tribal shaman.

The song reminded me of Kate Bush, indeed. I was never really impressed by her post-Scarlet work (except for the instrumental version of Night Of Hunters and some separate songs), but this time her work sounds more experimental and inspired. Kind of like the progressive side of Kate Bush. I hope the entire album is good.

I definitely connect this with "Snowflake", in particular, from that album. It's the ability to create a specific atmosphere. And one of the things that's really struck me about the first 3 songs from Native Invader is that they've all had a strong sense of their own atmosphere.

I've listened to Cloud Riders a lot because it has a unique sound to it & Up the Creek is equally great. It isn't often that I don't initially respond to a song that Tori has made, and even then it usually grows on me over time. Reindeer King is one of those songs for me -- I think it's something that I have to listen to more to be able to appreciate. I'm sure by the time the full album is released I'll enjoy it just as much as the others.

Transmogrification: The Art of Transforming from one state to another, as if by Magic. That's what this song is for me: it hovers between the Reral and Imagined, and not even a glacier can hold it back. THIS is the Tori I grew up with and adored (and still do) as a teen getting into his 20s, and looked to for strength at times when everything was so horribly uncertain. The glorious Lady is at her prime in this song, and I ache for more! Never EVER stop, dearest Tori - I love you!

This song seems like there are two stories being told about "ourselves" Ones bout a darker and lost being yet still pure being . We need to find ourselves a better place; Away from the pain of hate , war , loss, and all that makes us evil. The second story is a Nature story that unseen but not quite seen all the time. The mention of the Reindeer King being is the ruler of calm and peace he is trying to unify the forces of all these simple things we take for granted.

I find all of Tori’s works move or motivate in some way..even the daft ditties often have an effect. But her ability to reduce me into mind melting moments of sheer wonderment also pop up from time to time. Cloud On My Tongue, Tear In Your Hand ( who remembers that incredible lyric ‘maybe she’s just pieces of me you’ve never seen’? ...mesmerising, desperate), Gold Dust ( ...’how did it go so fast, we’ll say as we are looking back. And then we’ll understand....we held gold dust in our hands...’) Just the way this is phrased the last time towards the end of the song is up there with the best ever written by anyone. 1000 Oceans is heart-breaking from start to finish, so much so I will repeat myself, 1000 Oceans is heart-breaking from start to finish! Her most moving cover, for me, is Zepp’s ‘Thank You’. Or how about ‘Baker, Baker’? Another one that on the surface seems a pretty song but dig deeper and you’ll see it’s emoting in so many ways it’s tragic! Onto the most recent album, Native Invader. No one seems to mention Breakaway. So, I’m mentioning that as up there. It’s beautiful both lyrically and musically. Anyway, after Gold Dust, my favourite, I never thought Tori would tear me to pieces ever again. Then along comes this immense, seemingly tame (on first listen) ‘Reindeer King’...and after only a few listens I was whisked away to the local rehab centre for the abandoned and lovelorn. I’m still here, destroyed and picking at cushions 24/7. I try not to listen to it anymore because I think it could possibly kill me. So, in the meantime, if you see Neil......

This past year has been very chaotic. Before the 2016 election, I never considered myself cynical. After the election, I couldn't shake the feeling that so many people hate me for who I am: Asian, son of immigrants, gay, etc. I used to want to see only the best in people. And now, I have days when I feel like I hate everyone. This song is very healing. Thank you, Tori.

Hey, don't feel hated just because the other candidate won an election. Sometimes people are shit, sometimes hating is a good thing. There is no such thing as "only good", and I think it's better to let ouselves experience all emotions we, as humans, are capable to feel. But cut the victimist bs of "omg Trump won everybody hates me!"

ebromero2....please. You hold a golden ticket. If you are gay, you practically sit on a throne. If anyone picks on you because you’re gay, they will have a lynch mob sent out after them. This isn’t the 50s. Gays are golden gods in this era. You are almost untouchable. If you think you are oppressed because you’re gay, that’s because you were brainwashed by the media to believe in fiction...a false narrative that doesn’t exist in the real world. If you are feeling like a victim, it’s because you fed into the bullshit narrative d’jour. Try being white, of European descent, straight, and Christian. If you say anything with pride in your heritage or culture, you are automatically labelled as a white supremacist, and told to check your privilege. If you are any of these (European Caucasian, heterosexual, Christian) and male, you are prime enemy number 1. It is almost encouraged by social/mainstream media to hate them. That is the current popular narrative. Guess what. It’s all bullshit. The whole “Trump is Hitler and everyone who voted for him is a Nazi/white supremacist” is bullshit. A lot of people who felt they were screwed over with economical situations, due to Obama’s administration, didn’t want to go the way of Hillary, which would have continued it. Then there were people that hated Hillary, because they saw her corruption and fakeness. And they would rather vote for a complete dufus like Trump than a crazy corrupt lobbyist loving, insider,/establishment politician like Hillary. And they voted for Trump, not because they liked him, but simply because he wasn’t Hillary. Also, they voted for him because they hated all the politically correct rhetoric....they hated identity politics and false narratives and they voted Trump in spite of it all. And then there is the media that milks the small SMALL percentage of assholes and makes it sound like half of Americans are racist, hateful nazis. I assure you, they are not. Walk up to most people and they are very reasonable and accepting and down to earth. The media exaggerates and magnifies any little story that displays “mean world” syndrome. In other words, don’t believe the world is the way it is portrayed by social media, the news, or Hollywood/mainstream media. it is not. Step into the real world. Walk around town. Talk to strangers. You’ll find that most will be very accommodating, kind, down to earth. Even people that don’t agree with you on many issues will still treat you with respect, so long as you are respectful. It’s all about reciprocity and finding common ground. It’s not about identity politics. I don’t care what colour you are, what gender you are, what sexual preference you have, what ethnic background you are. It’s all about character and principles.it’s about finding common ground. If you act disrespectful and go looking for a fight, you will find one. If you go into a place, thinking like a victim and looking for a villain, you will be a victim and you will find your villain. Most people just want to be left alone and live their lives. If you start pointing fingers at them and blaming them and insinuating that they are bad, they will get pissed and resentful and even become hostile. And that is 2017 in a nutshell. Pandering and blaming. It is a play on emotions.
