I adore Tori's interpretation of this song. She made it sound as if it was her own. So dark and disturbing. Beautiful.

The only artist who I have adored consistently since I was, ohhh, much younger than I am now. Always provocative. Always interesting. Always gorgeous. Always Tori.

This is exactly what a good cover song should be, an impassioned interpretation that brings something new to a well known piece.

I loved VH-1 in the old days. It was great seeing such great performances like this all the time... until “reality Tv” Programming ruined the both VH-1 and MTV.

Tori has covered this song at least 33 times, the latest of this post was on 4/3/2023 at Royal Albert Hall and it was beautiful. I think that she said Michael Stipe was there, they are close friends still.

Tori always goes to her 'place' when she performs, whether it be live or a studio recording. She casts a different persona if not becomes a whole new character sometimes. That's why we (well, I) love her!

I can't get the image of Tori and Kate Bush together out of my head. What a show that would be!

While ithat is true, it is possible it might cause a rift in space-time or causing the universe to implode if ever Tori Amos and Kate Bush sang together, or even if they were just in the same place at the same time.

I'm so sick of people comparing the two. Tori is so much better than anyone else, I think her with anyone would be a letdown bc she would have to be brought down to anyone else's level bc there's not a person alive who is even remotely near the level tori is. Not even kate bush (but I also don't like her music)

wow - i remember when Ears With Feet were some of the most amazing, kindest and most generous group of people around. I was in a wheelchair at a show in 1996 (in OKC, i made her a mask, hey to anyone who remembers :)) and a stranger took off her coat and gave it to me to wear for the day, someone offered to find me some food as we waited in the M&G line. I wish that still existed, and it CAN if you focus on the music and what we have in common. Thanks!

I always thought she kicked but with this cover. When I heard her recording of this song on the Higher Learning soundtrack, I never wanted to hear REMs original anymore.

Not only that, as far as i can tell Tori and Michael Stipe are personal friends. So this is a homage more than anything.

Yes!! I was just talking about her covers on another song. This skill she has of just owning the songs and making them something new while still staying true enough to the original that we know what the heck it is (hehe) is incredible.

+AkelasanAK That doesn't necessarily mean that the ones who don't get her are wrong. Maybe the ones who think they do are. This is just rambling of random lines that happen to be from the same song in no coherent order. If one wasn't familiar with the original, it would make absolutely no sense, and it barely does even if you are familiar with it.

I love Tori! Like, a whole lot. But I've always wished her vocals on this version of the song were better. I love the piano bit she has, but her interpretation of the vocals is not my favorite. :-( Too bad. I love her though, in general. Pretty much if my soul would write songs, it would just re-write the ones she's already written.

Tori Amos is the intersection of artisty and insanity. Sometimes her crazy sounds like art, and sometimes her music just comes off as lunacy.

I wouldn't say that its better than the original, but the musical interpretation is beautiful by any standard. I don't like when she goes off on tangents of nonsense speak in my opinion it is distracting and takes away from the beauty and the flow of the song. @W4SG1J Your comment made me facepalm, because I can't see where you are getting "happy feelings" from the original song. It's certainly more up-tempo, but that's a different matter. And yes, I guess we indeed do have different types of music taste. I'm not big into covers in general tbh. but I feel like Tori has done some very excellent covers, because her interpretations are unique. I dislike covers, which are dull or could've been done by any similar band. And I do like metal.

@MrXevier I KNOW!! :) I also had my "Tori-Amos-Period" in the 90's.....still think she is one of the best female artists ever but she can also be so annoying if your not in that period/mood.....

At times when she doesn't remember lyrics she acknowledges it, laughs and apologizes... But sometimes she makes up her own to put her own twist to it. Who knows 😄 it's still good IMO.

I disagree. You should try to play an instrument, like a guitar, with Tori Amos covers. "Father Figure" was ridiculously, radically, changed. But I still really like the way she did it. This song is just "over the top". If you want to change a song so much, why not just write your own song? Tori is feeding off of us that know these songs so well by the original artists. If she presented these covers without our awareness of the cover, they would simply be a flop.
