    Toranaga looks so badass in this sequence. It reallly gives you an idea he had a lifetime full of war and he became good at it. During this episode we see Toranaga may suffer the same fate as this man but 46 years later he is playing the long game, patient game, art of war game.

    @@liamgibson8602 the tale TOLD is that he did it one swing, so in the end from an outside view the leader failed. The general wanted Toranaga to chop his head and assist with the seppuku because it is rare for a child to beat a grown general in battle and the general truly admires the boy and wanted him to be the one to kill him because this would be like a glory moment for him.

    This scene to me wasnt so realist but it was still a great scene. When samurai committed seppeku it was very respectful how they did it because they wanted to be as humane as possible to their enemy. A samurai always gave the enemy respect no matter who won. They would not have some 12 year old child cut off the head of a grown man it takes a great deal of skill to cut off someones head they always left just a tiny bit of skin so the head wouldn't roll about and insult people then they would store the head carefully in a bamboo container and send it to the enemies castle, everything was very organized. What I did love about this scene was he was a man who accepted his defeat and didnt try to argue or fight like he said 'it was fate that made me declare a unwinnable war' taking responsibility was something the samurai always did they were very honorable .

    Seppuku was a Samurai rite of honour. Usually, when a samurai performed the rite of Seppuku, you would have a kaishakunin so that when the blade went to your abdomen, or if something happened, he would have ended the rite for you. The fact that Toranaga acted as a kaishakunin and beheaded the rival leader probably means that he respected the rival and ended the pain early for the latter. It is, obviously, the opposite of what the title of the clip implies. Yes, it is an execution, but it is an execution that honours your rivalling samurai by acting as his kaishakunin.

    When the guy said meet in the afterlife, what if this guy reincarnated as Ishido instead? Just a supernatural possibility. Toranaga was older than Ishido by age anyways.

  • @MetalSmith

    @MetalSmith

    3 ай бұрын

    Generally speaking, you wouldn't reincarnate until at least a lifetime later in the sense of shinto. You have 20 years as a child, 20 years and an adult, 20 years as an elder, and then you have lived a complete life and when you die you go to 'rest'. People who died before 60 were thought to become restless spirits, and warlords and samurai were generally not wanted in the capital city of Kyoto because they brought death into the city of the emperor. If they reincarnated, it would be more than likely several generations removed and a rested spirit without the burden of that negativity. That being said, Shinto is very vague about the afterlife and the place where the kami are, which is why they adopted Buddhism to fill in some gaps in their own mythology.
