Shogun (2024) S01E10 : Toranaga sentence Yabushige to commit Seppuku

While Englishman John Blackthorne grapples with navigating the rigid hierarchy of samurai society, a more sinister plot unfolds. Blackthorne reveals the ambitions of European powers, particularly Spain and Portugal, who seek to not only trade with Japan but potentially reshape it in their own image.
"Shogun" promises to be a thrilling exploration of a pivotal moment in Japanese history. It's a story where the clash of steel and the clash of ideals will determine the fate of a nation. Will Japan succumb to the influence of European powers, or will it find a way to preserve its traditions in the face of a growing external threat?

I read the book first, watched the series second, and then I watched this second series third. The new series is better. The presentation is perfect. In many ways I wish there was so much more (like in the book). That's a good thing though, they made something I want more of. The original book and the two adaptations are all pretty great though, and the book is still my favorite. I like that they acknowledge that in the book Anjin was Yabu's second, but that in the series they created this also makes sense. It works. While I would not have made some of the narrative choices the creator's of the this series made, I really enjoyed watching it. It all was top notch. Toranaga's, Blackthorne's, and Mariko's actors in particular, but really there wasn't a single bad performance.

Poor Yabishige? Toranaga merely exploited Yabushige's nature, which he knew to be self-serving and treacherous (and it was). Toranaga couldn't have manipulated Yabushige that way, were it not for Yabushige's own character flaws. Also, let's not forget that he had a man _boiled alive_ -- and I am hard-pressed to think of a crueler death to inflict on someone -- merely for his own personal pleasure. Yabushige certainly is a charismatic character, and it's enormous credit to Tadanobu Asano as an actor for imbuing such a villainous character with so much of that quality, but Yabushige _is_ a villain.

He wanted the Anjin to do it as a “sorry my Brit”, but because it is in Torenaga’s plan to rid Anjin of everything (remember his “all men can be broken” line?) so that he can be the one to give him purpose and get his loyaty Torenaga refuses him.
