Even crazier, he did it as an Improvisation. According to the episode podcast, Toranaga never meant for Hiromatsu to die but because other lords there were already about to pull their blades, he took it upon himself to seppuku to preserve Toranaga's commanders. Real crazy SOB.

@@tayduatrinhcoi Yeah I had figures that much when Hiromatsu yelled at the other guys to shut up; then Toranaga turns to look back at Hiromatsu in a way you would think is anger, but on closer inspection there's a resignation on his face. There's so much subtext in what they say to one another to express their loyalty and care for each other after that. It's incredible.

Hiromatsu knows Toranaga is grieving I'm glad he tells his own son don't give up on him.

I love how human this scene is. There is no stoic bravery, only deep pain. Hiro Matsu was crying, Toranaga was crying, Omi, and even Buntaro were crying. There is no glory in war or death, only pain and loss.

@@Lach1234 Sadly, it's probably because it's limited that it's so good, they can spend more time making sure everything is as it should be.

This is not just fantasy or fiction. As anyone who has studied Japan history knows, from the Kamakura period to the Edo period, it was common for vassals to protest with their own lives by committing suicide by seppuku in order to remonstrate for the wrong judgment of the lord. This is also a sign of loyalty from the vassal to the lord.

In an interview prior to the release of the film, Sanada said that the recommended the production team to have Tokuma Nishioka play the role of Hiromatsu. He alluded to this scene as the reason why he chose Nishioka. "There will be a scene in which Toranaga and Hiromatsu need to have a relationship in which they can understand each other without words, and understand everything just by looking at each other. In order to play out that scene, Hiromatsu absolutely had to be Nishioka-san". In fact, Sanada and Nishioka have been friends in private for 30 years and know each other well as actors. In Japan, this kind of relationship is called "A-Un no Kokyuu," a Buddhist term where A means the beginning and Un means the end, Kokyuu means Breath.

Sanada's acting is crazy here. The way Toranaga is all "Do it then" and putting on the act that he's distant and broken but him visibly almost breaking down and wanting more than anything to tell him not to commit seppuku is so powerful.

Tokuma Nishioka is a veteran actor. He is an indispensable presence in period dramas. He gave an all-out performance. It was a time when I felt Ieyasu's wisdom, his deep thinking as a leader, his frightening ability, courage, and determination.

We regularly see Japanese companies leaders bowing in public to apologize and literal suicides after big mess up are not uncommon. Just a bit of an annecdote but I was in a group with a Japanese friend once and when she led us to the wrong way on a school trip, she kept apologizing for like 5 minutes.

The way the body collapses when the head was cut is so accurataly real. Love this scene too many layers❤❤

Oh God, I love my dad. I have tears in my eyes, imagining my father trusting his own convictions, and trusting me enough, to second him. And my father would deny me also, knowing I have a path of my own to follow. And being taught denial by my own father as Buntaro was - I could bear it from no one else. There is sadness, but love and honor in this scene.

Over all the shows I’ve watched.. this one hit home. I literally FELT the atmosphere and how they presented a view on sacrifice and loyalty. I cried deeply. For there is no greater love than to lay down one’s own life for his friend.

This is the first time in both Hollywood and Japanese media where I bawled my eyes out because of a seppuku scene.

Toranaga stares directly at Hiromatsu: "I will not yield." Hiromatsu: "Lord Toranaga... then this is farewell. Forgive me." I absolutely love this scene. I like to imagine the "forgive me" had so many meanings. Not being able to die with Toranaga for one. Not being able to see his ultimate victory, and for causing Toranaga so much pain with his death being a few others. The actors did an absolutely phenomenal job.

Brilliant acting by the casts of this show. You can see the rage that was flaming inside the Toranaga when his close friend commits seppuku. Love this show so much. Gonna feel sad when this miniseries is finished.

He's trying to make sure Buntaro understands that this is part of a larger plan.

I would like to answer the question, "Hiromatsu never had a meeting with Toranaga, but did he read Toranaga's true intentions and even throw away his own life on the playacting set up by Toranaga?" As a prerequisite, I would like you to recall that the plenary meeting was a mixture of vassals loyal to Toranaga and enemy spies who were in touch with Ishido behind the scenes. Therefore, Toranaga could not tell his vassals the real plan in that place, and he had to deceive Shidou's spies first. There is a proverb that Japanese people have used frequently since ancient times. It's "in fooling the enemy first deceive your allies." Toranaga's actions are based on this theory. The answer to the question of why Hiromatsu was able to read Toranaga's true intentions without having a single prior meeting with Toranaga, is also hinted at by a proverb that Japanese people have often used since ancient times. Hello! I am Japanese. I use a translator. Let me add something. I believe that seppuku in this case is not for the sake of honor. 1. to deceive spies. (I agree with your consideration here.) 2. to quell the vassals who might be inundated, and to allow Toranaga to carry out his true plan. 1. is an outward role, including Ishidou. 2. has an inward role. Looking ahead to future battles, if the Tranaga camp's plan worked, victory would save his vassals, friends, and family. So now, he was willing to sacrifice his own life for the sake of those important people. That is what it means to "serve the cause. Tranaga immediately understood Hiromatsu's true intentions and did not stop him from committing seppuku. Tranaga was not allowed to die. Many of his vassals might die on his own. He must somehow win the battle. Hiromatsu understands such a mind of Tono. Therefore, he moves rationally for victory. Forcing a large number of vassals to commit seppuku now would be a great loss for the future. This is a critical stage. Tranaga respects the loyalty and true intentions of Hiromatsu and silently observes his choice. Tranaga and Hiromatsu have the same goal. That is why, in the end, he vows that he will never let Hiromatsu's sacrifice be in vain. He entrusts his "victory" to Toranaga.

Sanada-sama is just such a fantastic actor. He conveys so much with so little. A tiny grimace or smirk tells you a lot about what he's thinking. Conversely, he inhabits that character so thoroughly that he knows when Toranaga would remain completely stoic. I bet Sanada-san would be a great poker player!

The acting in this piece is sublime, Japan is giving us a clinic as this is one of the best acted shows I've ever seen. The amount of emotion each actor shows, especially the non-verbal acting when the camera is on their faces, is extremely well done. Sanada looks like he's experiencing 1000 emotions at the same time when Hiromatsu commits seppuku, Buntaro even more. Even Omi and the brief shot of Yabushige shows that they are extremely upset and conflicted during this scene, and that is extremely difficult to convey without speaking. Just a brilliant scene in a brilliant series, this show absolutely deserves every accolade that it is receiving.

This is one of the best scenes i've seen in any media. Every actor in the secene in superb.

The Best Series since Games of Thrones. . .The Plot and Storytelling is IMPECABLE. . .

Expecting your son to second you/cut of your head, is asking too much of any son... no son should have to carry that burden and still be requested to continue following his lord... wow what an episode...I honestly, admire Buntaro more and more!

Damn, it's rare to see such a graphic seppuku scene. Most movies would just shy away from the actual gutting and beheading.

I cant finish this clip, it breaks my heart! The acting was so intense and realistic...

Subtle how Hiromatsu stops the other vassals from digging a hole for themselves by saying, “This is between me and my oldest friend.” Knowing now that Hiro was aware of the ruse and his role, this scene becomes so much richer with all the subtext involved.

I mean this was the scene of the whole series. The whole damn tension and suspense!

この目線の会話、海外の方にも伝わってる人とそうでない人がいるみたいだけど。 それほど複雑で上手過ぎる表現なんですよね。でもちゃんと伝わっている人には伝わってる。すごい時代ですよ。

同じくです！文太郎に言い聞かせている所もぐっと来た。簡単に死ぬことを許されない頂点に立つ虎永が背負っている物の重さと意味、そういう人を今後支えていく者としての心構え。文太郎の「父上」にこもった凄い愛情。こんな日本的なシーンをハリウッドで撮れたことに驚きです。

@@tasjan9190 "Dream within a dream" very appropriate title. Anytime one is trapped in dreams within dreams it is a nightmare.

This scene is already legendary. The look on their faces. The dialog. The screenplay.

Buntaro is probably my favorite characters in this series, heroically loyalists at its finest...i feel he captured the true rare glimpse essence of an samurai.

This was one of the best episodes of TV ever made if you ask me

If you watch closely in this scene, you can clearly see in their eyes that they knew "its time for the ultimate deception" and toronaga's acting tough but deep inside all emotions wants his eyes to burst into tears " farewell my friend ty for your sacrifice youre my closest friend and ally this is the only way, say hello to my son "

Buntaro didn't kill his father. This is a seppuku, he's the Kaishakunin.

You have it the wrong way around. The whole point of seppuku having a second, is to make it a non-suicide, or an execution, such that the 'sentenced' has a final chance to demonstrate resolve. But the circumstances have already sentenced him. The 'suicide' is not the point, because the honor-bound circumstance, of which the kaishakunin is the extension, and tool of, are what kills the object of seppuku. It's not his pure, individual choice to die, only something he must endure well. This is all the more evidenced by the fact that it was quite common for the seppuku to be purely ritualistic. The person about to die didn't always use the blade on himself, but simply symbolically moved it, to signal to the kaishakunin to make the cut. So yes, Buntaro did kill his father, as an extension of the honor code. And he disgraced himself while doing so, since the head is not supposed to come off, but remain partially attached. Being the second was a dubious honor, because there were so many ways it could lead to disgrace. No samurai wanted to be the second, if they could in any way avoid it. Of course in some situations samurai would perform seppuku themselves without a second, when there was no time or possibility for a ritual, for example on the battlefield, or if they were already so disgraced that it was seen acceptable to deny them a second. But this was not an ideal situation. Emphasizing the suicide aspect is inaccurate, because it is the environment driving the person to seppuku. Execution with expected participation is more in line with what it actually is. Kaishakunin is the executioner.

@@jonirischx8925 I always thought having a second is so you don't need lay in agonizing pain for several hours waiting to die as having your stomach cut wide open is extremely painful.

The eye contact between Hiromatsu and Toranaga, and the pain in Toranaga's eyes as he sees his most loyal friend performing his duty one last time for the shared cause. Man, this is where acting peaked!

The detail I love the most about this scene is Toranaga moving himself to have his whole body facing Hiromatsu as he is preparing, and then performing, seppuku. It's like an acknowledgment of what's happening and also having the bravery to face what was happening

Buntaro was a fantastic character. People see him as an abusive husband, but he was simply a man of his times. He was unwaveringly loyal, and the idea that his wife would have a father so dishonorable as to kill his own lord was a stain he could never wash off her or himself, not knowing what to do with that he resorted to keeping her alive every year as punishment for her fathers disloyalty, but from the books and the movie he mostly kept to himself and no matter her posture towards him was relatively peaceful at home. The scene from the show is the result of years of resentment between the couple that boiled over into his suspicion of her liking towards Anjin which further boiled over with the severe amount of drinking that they did. Only those not in these characters shoes would image themselves as Blackthorne and not Buntaro, which I think is a mistake. Even in the end, even seconding his own father, even seeing his father protest his own lord, he never once betrayed his faith or loyalty. I felt the most for Buntaro here.

Buntaro is what you get when you max lvl Strength, Bravery, Badassery, Loyalty, but miss out on Rizz. He never got the girl to love her back.

@@devanshudwivedi5875 My great-grandfather donated the sword to the museum a long time ago. The only proof that my ancestor was a samurai is the family tree kept at the shrine.

Finally saw episode 8 last night. I was saddened by this scene because I loved this old man. Such an incredible actor.

This easily became one of the greatest shows I've ever watched. What made this scene so great wasn't just the acting, but the fact that most people expected this to be a ploy, a game of chicken, so the way it ended was both heartbreaking and shocking. I've watched others react to it and you see many say "Why do that?" "It's so stupid" "What is this?". It's a lack of understanding regarding the severity of Japanese culture back then. Seppuku wasn't just self-deletion as its seen today, its an honorable end.

Hiromatsu know his old friend too well. My respect for him. This is all part of the Crimson Night.

What a scene this is, so tense, so controlled, so bad ass. I watched the old series when young and It has been one of my favorites. I was so happy to learn about the new one coming and and I knew it would be masterpiece as soon as I saw the actors involved.

This is pure tragedy, as well as pure beauty, in a sense. The most selfless act a friend could ever do, offer his own life for his friend's dreams. It may or may not be obvious, but here I offer my humble analysis from the dialogue. It shows their deep love, and mutual understanding as outlined in comments past. "My one and only friend" -> "my dear friend, it must come down to this" "I stood by your side" -> "you know, I have and will ever support you" "Then die by my side in Osaka" -> "don't do this, it's pointless, stay with me" "You are throwing away all that we fought for" -> "if I stay, you really will throw all of your plan away" "I have made my decision. Make yours" -> "if that's your decision, so be it" "So you do believe in pointless death" -> "you see its necessity, you know MY death isn't pointless, dear friend" The look on Toranaga here is wreathed in pain, he knows his plan won't work otherwise but he is desperately not wanting his friend to die. "Lord! Your vassal dies in vain!" -> "Lord! Your vassal dies for you!" "Then die" -> "then do it" Omi tries to stop it, not getting the unspoken truth. "I will not yield" Buntaro here isn't shocked, but kind of relieved, you can almost see him smile... he gets that his friend understood the full lenghts and costs of his plan, and has accepted the strategy of the situation. He then, says True Farewell, he isn't crying because of his decision, he is glad his friend understood him. Buntaro then tells his son to live for his Lord, be his support, even when the Lord has given up on himself. Toranaga is human after all, you can see it on his face he is trying his damn hardest not to cry, not to beg him to stop, as he steels himself. Buntaro offers his last attempt, a "Forgive Me", he begs forgiveness because of the anguish he is putting his dear friend through, a final "I'm sorry, but I know you got it from here".

Uh it's Hiromatsu, not Buntaro

Soundtrack picked perfectly

The way Hiromatsu says it's between him and Toranaga, Toranaga telling him to do seppuku and die, and Ishido laughing later when he hears about Hiromatsu's death-they're all linked. Hiromatsu shows his loyalty to his lord without even speaking. He's a true hero'matsu.

I was just crying like everybody was in the scene. That’s all.

Hiromatsu's actor (Tokuma Nishioka) is probably the best acting performance in this series. His role doesn't feel easy to play and he doesnt necesarily even say much, but in scenes you can feel his pressence, especially if he said 1 word. A close second (for me) is Yoshi Toranaga played by Toshirō Mifune and this scene is a great example of why. He manages to look "stoic" in his crying, but he acts in such a manner that you feel like Toranaga with every fibre of his being want to stop Horimatsu. Great performances overall in this series, from most of the key roles, even though there are a few you could critisize, in my opinion.

I have not seen a series episode that made me this emotional, since The Games of Thrones Red Wedding. This episode made me drink 2 shots of Don Julio 1942 at 10pm. What an EPISODE!!!

Truly, this was by far the best scene in the entire show.

This scene is masterfully acted and directed. It was a surprise to me and I was hoping it didn't come to this but when Buntaro gets up i knew its happening. Its especially hard for Buntaro because he doesn't even knows that this is being done as part of a larger plan...

It is tragic and profoundly amazing that when Toranaga and Hiromatsu came to the decision to go through with this plan they knew Buntaro would be loyal even in the face of his very father being the one losing his life by his sons hand. Buntaro is my favorite character as of now. A warrior who stands on his business regardless of what is laid out before him...even when utterly betrayed by his wife whom he shamefully struck because she had laid with another man...he bowed and asked to be forgiven by the very man she had betrayed him too because it was still that man's home...even when he was left behind at the dock he drew his swords and engaged hopeless odds in defense of his Lord...even when his own father who he respected and loved asked him to take his head...even when he had the man who laid with his wife under his sword he knew he could have killed the Englishman easily he withdrew his anger... even when that very Englishman needed help with recovering his ship Buntaro grabbed the rope and pulled with all his strength... Buntaro is the epitome of Bushido and to me represents the soul of the series.

What an intense scene! Bravo to everyone involved RIPower Hiromatsu 😢 💔

Epic. Beyond epic. Best thing on television, perhaps ever.

Hiroyuki should’ve been getting major roles like this his whole career. He’s always been the scene stealer side character but barely leads a project and when he does it’s fucking glorious. The emotions bleeding through his face as he’s trying not to overreact to his friend’s suicide was impeccable.

For people who may have misinterpreted this scene: Toranaga and Hiromatsu both can tell that Yabushige is playing both sides. This is a massive risk to allow, but they cannot just kill him. What they need, is to remove Yabushige from their ranks, or force him to fully commit. If Yabushige tells Ishido Toranaga is not planning to surrender, then it's ALL over. Toranaga NEEDS Yabushige to tell Ishido and the others that he has truly surrendered, without a doubt. We saw when John Blackthorn went to Yabu that Yabu still did not believe Toranaga was truly going to surrender. This could not be the case, this must change for their plan to work. Yabushige HAS to believe Toranaga is truly surrendering. The only way that Hiromatsu saw that he could do this, was by publicly disobeying his lord, putting himself to the sword. It was a statement to Yabushige, that if you are not willing to die for Toranaga right now, that you are not truly loyal. Even at this point Hiromatsu was not certain that Toranaga was actually surrendering, he stated many times that he truly did not know. This move by him was to give Toranaga a chance to finally best Yabushige and Ishido. When they say "Osaka needs to beleive" what they really mean is, Yabushige and Ishido need to truly believe he is surrendering. Both men know that Hiromatsu is Toranaga's oldest friend and ally, and Hiromatsu knew that the ONLY thing that would make Yabushige finally run away, was certain death. If Toranaga surrenders, they are all put to the sword, even Yabushige. Yabushige does not want this, he is only staying allied to Toranaga because he has to legally, and he doesn't want to be executed for disobedience. Yabushige's only goal here is to not die and to get land at the end of it all, he doesn't care about loyalty. The move was to convince Yabushige more than anybody else. That is why Mariko is present when John Blackthorn visits Yabishige, so she can report back to Toranaga what is happening, Yabushige knows this, which is the only reason he refused John Blackthorn's allegiance.

I disagree. I think the demonstration was for the sake of an Ishido spy located in Toranaga’s ranks. Because at the end of the episode, Mariko apparently updates Yabushige on Toranaga’s plans anyway….
