Top Tips for Superstar Presentations by Todd Reubold

Nowadays just about everyone with access to a computer is creating presentation slides using PowerPoint, Keynote or similar software. But is the message being lost in the mix of templates, animations, logos, clip art and way too much text? Basic design principles can be employed to create clearer, more powerful presentations.
Todd Reubold is director of communications for the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota. He leads communications and presentations workshops as part of the Institute's Boreas Leadership Program. He's also co-founder and director of Ensia - an award-winning magazine showcasing solutions to Earth's biggest environmental challenges. Todd is passionate about communications and has worked with a range of scientific and topical experts to help them become more effective and engaging communicators.
During this informative and slightly irreverent talk Todd will discuss a range of design and delivery best practices aimed at building better presentations.

this video was SO helpful. im a graphic designer, but when i sat down to do my presentation, and i wanted to make it NOT bad, i didn't have a clue. even though i know the principles of good design, it was hard to know when and where to project them without disabling the information or distracting from it. i really needed the guidance. everyone should have to watch this before making a presentation. thank you!

Great information, HOWEVER, this and all similar offerings still continue to MISS A VITAL POINT! The speaker is the PRESENTATION; the slides are the VISUAL AIDS. The foundation of public speaking is the key to dynamic presentation, but still the presenters focus primarily on the screen. Todd comes closer than most to urging speaker competence, and the white board with postits is GOLD. Do the speech first, then consider the visuals. Excellent. Tell a Story, Keep it Simple, Edit, etc., he's got the best rounded advice I've seen. Well done!!

Few things I wish were included here; how do you effectively end the presentation where you don't lose the momentum where the audience don't feel like its a cliff hanger? And how do you effectively get back on points you forgot to mention in an earlier segment of the presentation?

What does luck have to do with creating a great presentation? You have just given us the tools and techniques in a 27.40 minute video and you talk about luck? Seriously, why do grown up people STILL believe in fairy tales, santa claus, tooth fairies and luck? That's just nonsense. Any person who has worked hard enough, hustled long enough and put in the hard work into something, relationships, marriage, a business, their job, preparation for a job interview and a presentation knows that true success does NOT come from luck. It comes from preparation, preparation, preparation and work, work, work! Stop this superstitious nonsense. Do and be the best ALL the time and you WILL succeed in ALL things. There is no such thing as luck, that is just an excuse and a cop out not to work long enough and smart enough but to blame a non existing supernatural force called 'luck' for your inability give your very best in life. Stop the BS.
