Really enjoyed this overview of the adventure. Too many reviews are First Impressions and "first read-throughs" of the adventure merely restating or summarizing what it is about. This is a true review of the game with your experiences added in and I really appreciate that!

Thanks! The main obstacle for me to grow my channel at the moment is time. I work full time and find it hard to balance my time so I cant release videos as often as I would like. But I dont plan on stopping anytime soon,.

Wish I would have found this when I first started running this. I'm on chapter 4 right now and I've been having a super hard time with all the information the module throws at me. My group is also less than easy to run for as this is my first ever campaign. Thank you for the tips, let's see if I can shoe horn it all in at some point!

Thanks for the video! I'll make sure to look up your main chain about it. One big problem (or should I say, giant problem! ... okay sorry) about the campaign, is that even if even the autor say you shouldn't be afray as a GM to make the players loose a fight, etc., the camping is written as if they were winning everytime (cf one of the first big fight against giants, withing one of the three city you can choose where to guide your players). Of course, now I took in more experience as a GM (about this campain in particuliar) and I can adapt more easily, but that really didn't help about how to take it at first. Also, what doesn't help, is that funny enough, the danger aren't the Giants most of the time, but most simple monsters in DnD5E. While I was confused at first and a bit afraid to touch the monster's sheet, now I understand that I have to tweak almost every single monster because 99% of them have the capacity to oneshot any player in one turn, specially in the first level. I don't mind confronting my players to difficult monster, but as long as they can one shot someone, no amount of strategy will help them, even though they're against a bunch of weakened orcs and such. To spice things up, I combined my campaign, by opening it in a more "open realm", with the Adventure's League Scenarii. They really help giving ideas about what the players can do when they arrived in Chapter 3, where they can explore wherere they want. They also give a few firm objectives to the players instead of just letting out in the wild and ask them "now what do you wanna do?" (tho the campaign does offer some ideas of what they can have as objectifs to help them, like pursuiving The Weevil, or meeting SEER). Also, it gives more opportunities to discover the teleportation circles around the north. Finally, as to give the players a big need of confronting the giants, I'm intending to "give" them Khundrukar (from the same book as Against the Giants), the big dward fortress wich is actually at the ideal place to confront a giant invasion: up in the north, a bit up of Mirabbar. They already cleaned it fully and I'm preparing a few stuff, but giving the players more responsability will surely make they more motivated to fight the giants, and not just fighting them "because we're the good guys in the story" or "fame and fortune". Well, it's all in preparation and it'll need some testing, but I do hope it'll spice things up. Making them work for a fortress to hold will also give them the "hope to fight against giant", that will be a key point to the situation where they're running from them to it's time to put up a fight.

I added a link to the Wyrms of the North articles that I found online. Must have either accidentally deleted the link or forgotten to add it. Most of my notes when I ran STK where written in a physical notepad, but If there is any specific thing you wanted to know more about, I could let you know.

Holy cow so to play this module correctly i not only have to own the PH the DMG and the Monsters Manual but also have to have read about 5 other books from the last 3 editions? Urm do i even need the campain book or do i just pluck it together from other stuff? I am really confused here on how to even approach this. We had plans to run this module after we completed Phandalver and i was really looking forward to DMign it but now i feel that i have to be some kind of D&D historian to give my players some kind of satisfying experience.

  • @DungeonSmith

It definitely helps being a D&D historian, but you can definitely run it just with the information from the adventure book. Your campaign is after all your own story, so in the end it wont matter if you contradict something from a different book neither you nor your players owns. The materials I talk about from previous editions can help to expand on and flesh out the story, but are not 100% essential to run it.

Sorry to hear that. I had originally intended to make more videos in my series on Storm Kings Thunder but I had to move on to other things at the time. It's been a few years now since I ran SKT so It is not exactly fresh in my memory but there have been others who have suggested that I return and make more videos on the campaign. I have other plans in the immediate future, but it could still happen someday.
