I'm sure Lego would've made slightly more profit, and having more options for collecting / REASONS to buy more sets outside of the few bionicles you like each wave. Bionicle may have gone a completely different direction if the masks would've been implemented more heavily throughout the later waves rather than just having the mask of life and the Vahi as "collectibles" Masks and mask powers were so integral to the story it seems silly that they got rid of it shortly after.

Although I am a member of the Bionicle universe, I still must point out that Ninjago has some very high-end collectibles, most notably the spinner collectibles, including multiple pieces containing spinners and accessories to simulate spinjitzu, and the flyers to simulate airjitzu. Whether or not these are better than the Bionicle masks, kraata, weapons, and projectiles, is a question for the greatest philosophers.

Aeturin Turaga of Shadow thank you for your insight, wise Turaga. The spinners are fun sets but not quite collectibles in my mind the same way masks are collectibles for Bionicle; they’re almost more akin to small sets or even projectile packs.

Yeah I just thought the Time Blades and especially the Reverse-Blade is probably the most powerful artifact/collectible ever in the entire show 🤔😂 I mean „If you control Time you control everything“ is so true in every sense 😱

I agree; it’s both a good and bad thing that Bionicle had everything so clearly planned out from the start - Ninjago gets to experiment a lot more and try new things a ton, but loses the sense of a really well thought-out world with set rules like Bionicle had. Still two of my favorite themes though!

I think the greatest thing Ninjago has over Bionicle is how easy it is to play with their stuff. It’s a lot easier to position and play with 12 minifigures on a battlefield you made than it is to set up 12 large action figures. Especially because in a house there’s probably not enough stable and derelict space than a section of floor. Or you just have big tables. But that’s not so much a brand thing as it is system vs technic. A lot more options come with system just because of the size. I hope that made sense to anyone. Lol

I am no Bionicle fan but your love for the series really astonishes me. Only when a male is as committed to something as you are to Bionicle does he really become a MAN. A real man is measured by his passion. And, my man, you dwarf me in this aspect.

You call these bad characters/uninteresting? Matoro literally went from a shy translator, only for him to develop into a selfless hero when he sacrificed himself to help awaken Mata Nui. Name a more interesting character in Ninjago.

Both have their positives, both have their flaws, but overall. They are both god tier themes in my OP

Charlie c fair enough! That’s why I put out conflicting vids, to spur discussion and gauge community opinion - this one seems to be in the lead judging by likes/dislikes alone!

There are similarities between the characters and story of ninjago and bionicle but honestly both are also radically different. Ninjago is cool for me because it's a lighthearted lego ninja adventure with good Asian inspired builds and bionicle is just the most amazing and epic tale of robots living on a tropical island. Nothing tops bionicle in story! Ninjago is great too though for its callbacks to bionicle (I've been watching the show) and it's on its own as a funny and cool adventure. Love em both.

Shouldn’t Jala’s revivial of revived Lhikan? Since it was he’s mask and just the mask was left or was their some other context I forgot?

I honestly have absolutely Zero interest in Ninjago. Never have and never will. Bionicle on the other hand? is legitimately the ONLY toy line I had as a kid that I still want. The only one I find just as interesting, just as exciting, just as magical and awesome as I did when I was a child. Bionicle really is special and Lego should be eternally proud of what they made.

I hear you. Bionicle is one of the main pillars of my childhood and my immersion with it is one of my best experiences in life.

Although I missed the old days of Bionicle, and still has Matoro with me to this day, I think Ninjago is still great and is the first non-bionicle Lego set I got, both series just bring nostalgia man

I think in 2010 bionicle got split in 2 lines - hero factory and ninjago. So hero factory upgraded the sets and Ninjago the story. Sadly, only one survived to this day.

I am inclined strongly disagree with your 5th point when regarding morality. There is *a lot* of nuance in Ninjago villains. Characters are constantly straddling the sides between good and evil and that makes far less black and white that I think the video makes it out to be. Another comment already provided several examples and I agree with them all and will even offer a few more. Garmadon was mentioned in season 1-2 but he really had unbelievable depth in seasons 8-10. He's struggling with losing his humanity and his held back by it even though he doesn't want to. I think the best part of season 10 was Garmadon, where it's impossible for him to understand human emotions but he disparately wants to. Like he knows he should be feeling something but he can't and I found that amazing. And then we have Skylor and Faith, people who started out as bad guys but become good. I find Faith especially interesting because she's essentially the same character as Krika. The only difference is that Krika felt bound by loyalty/destiny and stayed with the Makuta while Faith actively made a choice to trust strangers when they offered her something better instead of staying with an evil group. We also have Akita (pretty meh character in my opinion) but even she is more complicated than just good and evil. She's a good buy but she's blinded by revenge. She actually fights Lloyd just to kill Zane which is a very interesting 3 way dynamic. Now they could have handled her better in my opinion but her grey morality is still there in this rather subpar seasons. And Haumi, man I'm not even going to bother explaining Harumi, she's like the definition of nuance. She's the poster girl for complex yet understandable villain motivation that seamlessly fits into the story. I think Ninjago does way more with the nature of evil than that point gives it credit for. There are way more instances of good characters turning bad and bad characters turning good than simple mind control or and evil force controlling them. (And even that last part has been handled with more complexity than just automatically evil. Many of these dark forces are corrupting and seductive, like the Dark Side. They will change you but you still have a choice to embrace the evil like with Kai and Chen's staff.)

Obi-Wan Kenobi you bring up some very fair points and I can definitely concede on some. I think my overall point is that Ninjago has SOME nuanced villains, but Bionicle has a few every single wave. In terms of Garmadon, I think he had good nuance in season 10, but in season 8 he was just purely evil and it was really hard to get a read on his emotions, especially as Harumi kept saying she only brought back “the evil version.” This kinda continued into season 9, all the way up until the last episode of the season in my opinion. I’m gonna be totally honest, Skylor doesn’t really impress me as a character all that much. Her motivations are really strange, and they didn’t really give her enough depth as a surprise villain character imo - she just immediately became a hero and didn’t struggle too much with fighting her father, part of which is because Chen was so cartoonishly evil and over the top it’s hard to imagine any sane person believing he could be in the right. As for Faith - yes, I think you have a good point there, although again, there was kinda less of a struggle with Faith, and she just popped up and decided to help because she overheard Wu was with them. Harumi, I can give you that one for sure. At least season 8 Harumi was really great and hands down the best Ninjago villain. My point was that for every Harumi or Garmadon, we have dozens of Chens, Pythors, and Aspheeras - purely cartoonishly evil villains who want revenge, or power, etc. My point was less that Ninjago doesn’t have any of it, but more that in my opinion, Bionicle does nuance a little better.

I know there is many people in the comments that enjoy Ninjago more than Bionicle, and that's fine. However after the time twins arc, I kind of fell out of interest for Ninjago. As well as outliving its replacement lines like Legends of China and Nexo Knights. Both lines that I enjoy, but sadly came to an end. Lego seems to really want to discontinue it, but didn't because it was too popular to kids. However, after looking at some of the recent arcs, shows that the line has been dragging on longer than it originally can handle. Although it doesn't become too complex like Bionicle, remaining light hearted and having a simple plot for kids to follow, but the recent arcs rarely connect to one another, plot points usually get dropped and characters seem to rarely grow throughout the series. It seems that the story tone and characters have sort of became stagnated after the Airjutisu Arc. The most baffling part of the show to be is that despite having the characters as minifigures, there is no Lego bricks seen anywhere in the show. Not even their vehicles or buildings show any sign of being made of Lego pieces. They don't have to be everywhere, but it kind of funny that this world have minifigures to inhabit it, but has no a Lego bricks that the minifigures can interact with, nor doing something creative. Then again, that's probably something that only bothers me. The Ninja also gets nerfed in almost every arc by stripping them of their elemental powers through other means like magic or realm hopping. Now, I know you are typing on the comment section, saying I'm biased, and you maybe right. I'm just sharing on what's on my mind on why Ninjago doesn't seem to grow on me anymore. Anyway, nice video bringing going up many points on why I probably zoning out of Ninjago after a while. Because the line doesn't have a lasting impact like Bionicle have.

You make a lot of valid points, although I would encourage you to at least revisit seasons 8-9 of Ninjago - the time twins arc, AKA season 7, is widely regarded as the worst of the worst, as they had temporarily replacement writers do a rush job for a season after the movie was delayed. Seasons 8-9 are incredibly good and almost Bionicle level in storytelling quality and characterization

@@DuckBricks I guess, but what bugs me is that people are saying that the Ninja in the show are more powerful than the Toa, like in powerscaling, they considered them continental level of power. Yet they kept getting nerfed in many other seasons. Making it hard for the ninja to reach their full potential when they keep losing their powers by other means as well as rarely growing up in character. Even when they do, it kind of gets reset after a season or two, to return to the status Que. I'm not also certain that the ninja have resistance to their elements like the Toa have. Maybe they do, or not. But what do you think?

As a fan of the Ninjago show and a collector myself, I honestly wish the show to have a nice ending and have the set production outlived the show. Dragging the show too long would eventually damage itself, as it keeps contradict and retcon itself over time, over and over again. Let's it just be a collectable building theme for a good amount of time, since the quality of sets is just getting higher and higher every year.

In my opinion, Ninjago's prime year was the Serpentine. That one had actual character development and some pretty high stakes too. Plus, the Serpentine were just awesome! Bionicle is still superior though.

@Nondroid I wasn't just referring to the show. The set lineup for the Serpentine was my favorite too. Ninjago these days is all over the place and just weird. As for Bionicle, I gotta agree with you for the most part. It's prime was when it was just confined to Mata Nui, from the first canisters washing up to when the Toa of Light was revealed. Not to say the rest of it was bad though. Karda Nui and the Glatorian were some of my favorites too! But the first year or so will forever reign supreme as the best moment for Bionicle.

Same, I love both equally as well which is why I put out two conflicting videos, but there are definitely clear pros and cons

you know what Ninjago should do in a modern season have an astronomer (I can't believe there isn't one yet), who spots a distant planet with moons and some cosmic clouds and the planet shoots 6 objects towards Ninjago eventually found out, to be mask cue the Ninjago, Bionicle crossover (and Chima if they want to, since Ninjago and Chima share the same world)

I love how this is a top ten list, which implies that there are many more.

@@heyguysiguessthatsit4610 Zane sacrificing himself probably was based on it, but the rest seems purely coincidental, Nya wasn't originally supposed to have the element of water, she got it all the way in season 5 and by then we already had seen tons of girls, Wu and Garmadon were pretty much confirmed to be based on Star Wars, so don't consider that, as for the whole elements thing, there are tons and tons of franchises with characters that have elemental powers, what makes you think they ripped off Bionicle of all things? As for the Golden equipment thing, they didn't need ''equipment'' they just needed the weapons which have elemental powers, I bet it's nothing similar to what happened in Bionicle, as for the gold ninja thing, I don't follow Bionicle so I can't say if it's accurate or not

I've always been a Bionicle fan, but only recently did I get into watching Ninjago. It's sometimes a hit or miss, but I think it rightfully deserves its spot as Bionicle's torch carrier. Still my second favorite theme.

obvious Bionicle fan here, while i do mostly agree with your points the two i disagree with are the following. 1) while ninjago's consistent cast of 6 limits the story, it's better for brand identity. seeing the same consistent characters makes it so casuals and non fans can easily recognize the series it came from. its why every pokemon anime stars ash and pikachu, just put those characters on a blank page with no show logo and you know where they're from. if next season it was a brand new never before seen creature on some other random kid's shoulder, if the name of the show wasn't above his head no one would know what they were looking at. if they retired ash as a character and made the next anime about a new trainer who also has a pikachu, that'd work however, but it's still on some level a risk. translate this to bionicle, year 1-4 there was at least one red charcter with a hau, a hau was used on a ton of promo material. hordika phase out any hau users and ignition trillogy makes the ignika the new mask in the promos. even tahu's return doesn't even have a hau shaped mask. doing that took a hit to brand recognition built in the first 4 years, and relies on only name and recent iconography. ninjago's approach is less exciting, but safer. 2) having a TV show that's the central piece of canon was a good choice. if you're a new fan, catching up is as simple as bing watching on netflix. Bionicle wasn't as centralized thus having a starting point to follow through end is hard for new fans, even outside of fan guides. Closest thing to a centralized comprehensive story (outside the novels, which can't be the main source BC no one reads books) were the comics but they aren't fully comprehensive of key elements (like skipping Takanuva VS Makuta and saying "watch the film") and they didn't have an accessible backlog at all times. The website often removed older issues and reprints of the trade issues weren't until the end. In fact, it's easy to forget that MNOG was hidden and then straight up removed, making the true starting point lost until fan distribution. I'd say lego's treatment towards bionicle's legacy story content was more instrumental in franchise decline than narrative complexity. Ninjago treats both as a problem, for better and worst.

Actually for the Ninja losing their elemental powers for the Ghost Season, it makes sense. In the Stone Army Season the Ninja find the Temple of Light and through a ritual give some of their power to help Lloyd unlock his Golden Power, eventually the Ninja decide they need their powers back as the ELemental Blades acted as a substitute, but the Ninja don't have them anymore (You can definitly criticize that nonsense.) ANyway they basically reverse the ritual and Lloyd gives the Ninja back their powers, yet I think this then established Lloyd as basically tied to each of the Ninja, so when Morro possesed Lloys this messed up their connection to him and they lost their powers until Lloyd was unpossesed. THe Golden Weapons acted as like a crutch, it allowed the Ninja to use their powers easily, as we see the Golden Weapons can allow anyone to use their elements. THe Ninja just made use of them so much they naver learned to use their natural power, they were like this until they got the ELemental Blades and lost their pwoers to Lloyd, the Blades acted as a new source, then in rebooted they got them back, and with no elemental weapons this tiem the Ninja actually used the powers themselves, and weaponswere still used but largely due to them still being ninja, and it meant they could fight an not always needign to rely on SPinjitsu or powers. But yah it got realy bad when powers and abiities were just randomly dropped like Airjitsu and the Elemental Dragons.

Duckbricks I know Lego sends you sets early for review so I know you have a really good relationship with them. Is there any way you can ensure a Bionicles reboot sometime that reboots the original story that started in 2001 incorporating alternate universes and time travel? That’s my dream!!!! Well it’s one of my ultimate dreams!!! And if so can you ensure the Lego pieces are like bionicles used to be made from in 2006 2007 and 2008? I feel that those joints and pieces were the perfect design!!!

Why Bionicle is better then Ninjago? 1. Bionicle is Bionicle. 2. Ninjago is not Bionicle. It's that simple.

I like Ninjago a little bit better personally. It was a bigger part of my childhood. I also like the sets better because Bionicle sets are fragile sometimes. Still. Bionicle is a close second.

Nice! I actually did put out a conflicting video of top ten reasons why Ninjago is better than Bionicle, as they’re very close to me!

Well, Bionicle is obviously better than Ninjago because it’s the first them to have a lot of media that tell it’s story, which feels like an actual story, and the heroes take things seriously. Plus, there is more than one character who has an elemental power rather than one character.

No, no. What I trying to say is there many types of characters in their species in Bionicle, and each type has an elemental power. For example, there are many Toa of Fire. In Ninjago, each family of Elemental Masters has one elemental. For example, Kai and his dad has Fire. You get me.

@Cool & Emo That’s what I’m trying to say. Bionicle characters are cyborgs with the same elemental power in each type. Ninjago, though, has humans, and a generation’s elemental power is passed on to another generation. Type of species and family are different things. I mean, let’s say that there is much more Toa of Fire than Elemental Masters of Fire. I basically like having more people with the same elemental power, like Avatar: The Last Airbender (I’m looking at Bionicle). Lol. Ninjago is sort of like Xialon Showdown if you know what I mean (it’s an old show in 2003-2006 that I used to watch).

i think love isn't canon is 1 of reason why bionicle is better than ninjago,because since ninjago season 11 sometimes there is a shipwar between harumi x lloyd and lloyd x akita and sometimes make ninjago fandom become a toxic fandom,and because love isn't canon in bionicle so bionicle fandom isn't toxic because a shipwar

One has transcended the lego medium itself due to their design, and is more than just a Toy even to general audiences, while Ninjago will always be seen as Lego toys and its medium will never transcend that of being associated with Lego due to the iconic look of Minifigures

They're both equal in my opinion

Both Bionicle and Ninjago are good. Just love the mask collection and each new piece for each wave.

Bionicles IS better than Ninjago, I’m not trashing on ninjago but it’s just facts.

All agreed. Also i have sets from both themes. Ninjago i have more but i feel Bionicle is just better. Nexo knights or Chima can easily beat both of those.

Is funny how this video has very few dislikes but I’ve seen videos that are the opposite saying that ninjago is better than bionicle and those have tons of dislikes, lol The toxicity of the community 🤷‍♂️

LEGO Bionicle & HERO Factory what made these very Brief but Significant Group of Fans from 2001 to 2014 that really Saved LEGO when LEGO really needed help to Survive! No offence , but Ninjago seems to be made for the target audience of Children , so have not own a single Ninjago piece until today! My most Precious LEGO Sets would be the Bionicle Piraka Gang & the Toas from the Mata Nui , Voya Nui & Mahri & Preston Stormer , Evo & Furno from the HERO Factory! >>> 🌷🌿🌍💖🇩🇰

This is mostly right, but some of this stuff just feels bias. I am a Bionicle fan and Ninjago one. Ninjago does have progression, and just making everything canon is not smart and Bionicle's lore is a reason it was cancelled. Ninjago is smart as it's easy to keep up with the story.

Same here - I’m both a Bionicle and Ninjago fan, and also put out a video on the completely opposite end of the spectrum - the point was to compare and contrast both from the perspective of someone who loves both properties as LEGO themes

Simplicity of lore and story narrative has its pros and cons though. On the one hand, if you have a story that's easier to follow and make sense of, you may not have a story that is as interesting or worth following to begin with. On the other hand, if you have a more complicated story and worldbuilding, it is potentially more interesting and immersive. However, it can also feel intimidating or overwhelming in the required effort to make sense of it and keep up with it all.

I also don’t want to play with little yellow figures. I want COOL SHIT.

These are very good reasons.

I disagree with the affordability of the characters, because many sets include multiple main characters and to have the full Bionicle main cast each wave would be like 60 dollars a year, without any villain's to play with on the side. Buying each separately adds up over time, and the lack of opponents would make for dull play, unless you spend EVEN MORE money.

You make a really fair point and yeah, you can definitely get most of/the full Ninjago team in most sets (although sometimes you get the occasional Nya locked behind a $80-$100 set exclusively for some reason), but imo the nice thing about Bionicle was being able to focus on one or two main characters, be it a hero and a villain or any combination, and not really break the bank - unlike Ninjago, were nine times out of ten all the cool villains/main antagonists are only in the most expensive sets

@Tesla-Effect at least you weren't Danish and had to pay even more. Only because LEGO factories were in the US... despite it being Danish. Makes sense that the factories aren't in Denmark though.

I like ninjago but this video is spitting fact honestly ranking this three Lego show’s by darkness and machete Bionic is the most machete then Moinke Kid and then Ninjago

What I like most about Ninjago's story (and what elevates it above Bionicle in my eyes) is that it doesn't take itself to seriously. Bionicle's melodrama gets a bit grating after a while.

Bionicle is better for newcomers. OG ninja go is the only thing that comes close or rivals bionicle. I’d argue they’re equals in a sense.

I think Ninjago is better because the characters have more depth, the story is consistent, it has great world building and the sets have great prices. Also I think its a bit unfair to compare ninjago and bionicle, bionicle had books,comics,movies and games, ninjago just has a show

As I progress further into the lore of Bionicle, I think I don't agree with Ninjago having better writing than Bionicle. Ninjago has a lot of retconned details and doesn't really have a good set of guidelines to follow. But there's something to point out, the initial point of Bionicle and Ninjago are different. Ninjago takes a straight forward and simple plot line, where Bionicle tends to show its mysterious and deeper story is yet to be revealed. Collecting wise, I think both have great collecting value, but as a specialized theme, Bionicle is definitely more expensive on face value. I'm a fan of both lines but started in 2011 with Ninjago and Hero Factory first, then Bionicle. I think you should have sometime to explore Bionicle more and then re-evaluate both lines.

The sets don't all look the same.

The ninjago characters do age and it shows that esspecially in season 9 with master wu and Lloyd is shown to change in season 8 when he seems to reach puberty

That is true, but in general, as the creator stated, they’re “perpetual teenagers” which is a little odd to me but makes sense for a kid’s show
