Love this one! Pterodactyl is short form for Pterodactylus, though most people use it to refer to any flying reptile(formally known as Pterosaurs). All of them could certainly fly, most of them quite well. Pterosaurs were around roughly the same time as the dinosaurs(though they're not the same!), and ruled the skies for around 200 million years, ending when a massive asteroid struck the earth 66 million years ago. The Oxygen Disaster(aka the Great Oxidation Event) occured around 2.4 billion years ago, before complex life- and was actual a disaster because MORE oxygen appeared. Most life at this time was used to a different atmosphere, and expelled oxygen as a byproduct of them producing energy. Eventually so much oxygen became present in the atmosphere that it killed most life, the guys that couldn't breathe it. All life today is descended from those that could take in oxygen, Pterodactyls included!
