Top Prime Cine Lenses Compared - DZO, Meike, Zeiss, Xeen & NiSi - Entry Level & Full Frame

Фильм және анимация

Don't forget to read! Here's a quick series of tests between 5 popular entry-level cinema lens families all available in a 50mm focal length and in both EF and PL mount. The test starts off with a look at each lens shot in full frame 35 format on the Sony FX9.
The first round is a clean look at each lens, followed by a flare test, an Aputure 120D at full brightness pointed right down the barrel. The final section of the test is an in-focus to out-of-focus rack to see both breathing and the look of the out of focus area, popularly known as bokeh.
A lens designed for cinema is not just about the image it creates. Lenses in this category should have several mechanical advantages design for shooting motion images over lenses designed for still photography. This video does not explore all the aspects you'll want to consider when choosing a lens for cinema or narrative application, however it does do a very good job of showing relative visual differences/similarities of entry level brands making genuine "full frame" format motion picture lenses. We recommend opening multiple windows, watching on a big screen, in 4K. Pause often to see the subtle details and visual differences as needed.
Lenses Compared (all PL mount):
DZO Vespid, 50mm/T2.1
Meike Full Frame, 50mm/T2.1
Zeiss Compact Prime 2, 50mm/T2.1
NiSi, Full Frame, 50mm/T2.1
Xeen Carbon Fiber, 50mm/T2.1
If you don't know what lenses to get, please consider professional help. Call the team over at Hot Rod Cameras!
This test has been produced with standard scientific methodology, although it was not documented with the intention for it to be reproduced. This test is also not comprehensive, absent are the Sigma Cine 50mm and Schneider 50mm Xenon lenses which were not readily available at the time of testing, future comparisons will likely include both of these options.

Man DZO Kills it!! Beautiful Bokeah, No Breathing, and a nice lens flare. All 3 main things to look for when buying a cine lens.

Thanks for making this! What’s your opinion on the DZO Vespids vs the Meike? Haven’t came across much of people comparing the two thoroughly

Both are quite good. They are a bit different in form and performance. It really depends on what criteria matters most to you. You are welcome to call our shop and we can get into it in more detail.

Thank you guys for the fast post here. Would have liked a VO of your thoughts. But no worries. I’m also looking at the Meikes Full Frame for my FX9 as an owner operator, and rent the Zeiss CP3 every so often when budgets allow. But that Meike to me looks quite neutral and clean and not too clinical, which is nice. Still debating on the Meike vs Vespid. Here in Toronto, no one has the Meike for testing. And I hear the CA on the Vespids would be a bother after a bit .. still torn on the cheaper owner op set.

We didn't really want to color this test with commentary, we think it speaks pretty well on it's own. But if you call Hot Rod Cameras we can give you our feelings on each lens. If you are on a budget It's hard to go wrong with any of the lenses in the test. Your decision should mostly be personal preference for the look. We agree on the Meike. They make some really good images, the build quality also seems particularly high all of which is pretty impressive considering the cost.

Thank you very much for your review!!! Please tell me how these lenses compare to Leica R? I am interested in contrast, sharpness and color reproduction. I really love my Leica R set. Will I get more picture quality when I buy a Vespid set?

If you're in or near Los Angeles, you're welcome to come in to our shop to check them out and record some footage. Picture quality is a subjective thing, and is subject to personal preference. The Vespids will provide objectively superior mechanics, a much more accurate focus through, for more robust build quality (this is crucial if you'd like to use a clamp-on mattebox), larger apertures on the wide end, and a wider 16mm focal length. I also prefer having a 50mm and 75mm to having a 50mm and an 80mm or 90mm - the smaller gap in field of view is more cinema friendly, in my opinion.

Such an interesting test. I watched it several times with the names covered to pick my favourite. Turns out I liked the ones I already thought I didn't like - the Xeen was my favourite, followed by the DZO!

Thanks for watching! I remember a while back when Duclos did a blind test survey of lenses, and Xeen won a very high number of votes. It goes to show - the best way to evaluate the images a lens produces is by looking at them!

It's most likely due to the fact that the light in the background is a different temperature from foreground lighting. The difference is perceptible with each lens to me.

  • @hotrodcameras3656

    @hotrodcameras3656

We haven't had an opportunity to compare them. Xeen CF should give you a look consistent with what the original Xeens gives you, so this video should be somewhat helpful in making the comparison. The overall differences between the Xeens and Vespids (aperture, construction, focal length selection, size) are most likely greater than the differences between Xeen and Xeen CF.
