The 4Kids era was an interesting one, to say the least. The effort they put into censorship was somewhat admirable. At the same time, though, it was clear that a studio literally called "For Kids" wasn't really meant to dub an anime like One Piece. If they wanted to live up to their name, they should've solely focused on family-oriented and kid-oriented anime, which Japan has made plenty of, believe it or not.

Thing is, they didn’t really want One Piece. Tokyo Mew Mew, the show they actually wanted, was only available in a packaged deal with OP. It was both or none. They went with the deal, and figured that they might as well do SOMETHING with OP while they had it.

Truer words were never spoken. All of the previous series they had dubbed were originally marketed towards kids and families, as such, it made little sense to market One Piece towards kids and families since it wasn't intended for them.

Makes me glad i never saw the 4kids dub of one piece. Funimation handled this show greatly

(dark skin, big red thin lips? have you ever seen that caricature before?) 4kids tried to correct it by making the skin lighter so it doesn't appease to the stereotype

My first intro to one piece was the 4kids dub it was a pretty jarring but overall pleasant experience to realise that one piece was even better than I thought.

Nothing could have prepared me for Shanks’ voice. Also Helmeppo’s weird…spring-loaded hammer(?) is the funniest thing I’ve seen in awhile.

I don't even understand the point of a lot of these. For example changing the gun into a hammer? I mean it's still essentially a death threat so is the weapon really the issue? Then there's changing the color of the bottles, changing rice cakes into cookies, and don't even get me started on 1:08

I think a lot of you are misinterpreting the censorship at 1:08 I'm pretty sure they changed the skin tone because the original one resembled racist caricatures of black people popularized in earlier American cartoons. They weren't trying to censor black people themselves, but lightened the skintone to avoid showing what could be interpreted as a big oval lipped, very dark skinned racist caricature. Just look up "Blackface in cartoons" and you can see what I'm talking about. That being said, I'll admit that I don't know the true intentions of the editors. But as a black woman, this was the first thought that came to me when seeing the changes in the video. I also feel that there are better ways of editing the censorship that could keep the character darker skinned, but it seems that they tried. Edit: I forgot I made this comment. Genuinely surprised that I'm getting so many replies over a year later. As a bit of extra clarification: I still believe that the example in the video was an attempt to make something that is racist appear less so. But ultimately, the look and mannerisms of the character itself are so flawed that no matter what they tried, it would be pretty hard to near impossible to remove all of the problems the design poses. So yeah. I feel like they tried something to make the character less racist than the original, but it wasn't the best solution, coming off as erasure instead.

Ok a few of these are actually pretty clever, like at 1:24 how they edited in a completely different scene to tell the same event, Zoro being stabbed, without showing the blade piercing his body. It feels like some really talented people jumped through hoops to comply with those weird requests. And you can laugh all you want at there being censorship in the first place but it's kinda natural, there also are changes/censorship in the original Japanese anime compared to the manga. Out of these very scenes for example, Zoro's wound was much more bloody on the pages, and at 1:54 for whatever reason they gave Luffy a happy expression while in the manga he had an angry, more menacing smile.

@@blackriverjack4722 It does. He speaks on how in Xbox parties kids often us the N-word, but Xbox and Ps4 have made it possible to report parties to decrease things like that, but then you have republicans like y’all who find things like this acceptable.
