Less than 100HP is a beginner bike? That’s ridiculous. What’s really ridiculous is street bikes making over 175 HP and can go over 200MPH. Where do I ride that?

As some one from Europe, the reason we class 4-500s as a middle weight bike is because of our licensing system. Most people start on a 125 so going to a 500 is a big jump. So seems more middle weight. It’s also restricted to 46bhp in the UK so a 100-150bhp bike is not middle weight.

Plus our narrower roads and terrible conditions (both road and weather) means there’s less need for the extra HP above say an average 650cc 75hp bike. 100+ would likely be classed as a big bike

I learning on the street triple r 765. Not gonna lie a year of riding and I’m happy with it but I wish I got the rs or moto2. I considered the trident but I’m very happy I chose the r over it. The safety features and my age probably helped because I was cautious. But if you’re older and looking to start riding a bike I wouldn’t start lower than a 650.

unpopular opinion...the tank on the z900 looks like it sorta melted into place...really round and lacks presence. it kinda makes the bike look sad ultimately making it ok looking, but not gorgeous or as good as it could look. now, with most other bikes you have to put up with ugly headlights...which apparently is the most difficult part of a bike to design cause almost no bike has good headlights...Triumph Street and speed triple lights have ugly bug looking lights, all the Yami MT bikes have ugly unfinished looking headlights, KTM lights.....angular and ugly. Honda Hornet headlights....droopy, pointy, and ugly. Suzuki naked bikes....derivative and ugly. And it goes on and on. so, its either headlights or gas tank...i guess the tank is less noticeable...

2023 XSR900 here.. Dunno, hard to beat the newer Yammer 9 triples what a package. got mine for $10.3K. Get it tuned with a long tube header exhaust, upgrade the front pads, maybe the -1, +2 sprocket change if you like competitive racing 2nd tier liter bikes to 120 and don't like loosing ALL the time. Living the life. Suspension is good! learn to adjust it. 420 Lbs. is worth a few pony's for this beauty it's the Big Block Torque/pull at low RPM you want. Most of the time, you never finish out the wind up. The Z900 would be my 2nd choice, not a big fan of the formidable Thumper twins. Back in the day, the Air Cooled 4 cylinder Honda 750's were Wide! The 6 cylinder was Silly! The 3 cylinder H2 only had 3 cylinders (but still air cooled), was about as wide as a bike could be without dragging the alternator cover. Now with water cooling, even a 4 cylinder is fine. your mileage may vary.. whatever you pick, the quick shifter is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (worth at Least 0.5 sec in the quarter), and get the ABS as a requirement. You can always turn it off.

So…. How are these bikes for noobs? I’m a responsible person with a mature age and I want to start riding. Seems like a headache to get a 400cc +/- size bike only to have to sell it later, then buy a larger bike (capable of sustained highway speeds/distance is the goal). I’m really leaning towards the TKM, possibly the MT-09, as a first bike. That means testing and learning. Last time I road a bike solo was eighth grade… DECADES ago, literally. Everyone I know has a bike, even my girlfriend, Honda Shadow Phantom brand new off the floor.

so the speed twin 1200 is basically 13k, the street triple R is 10k.....so which is better bang for buck then? i won't be doing any track days, Love the aesthetics of the Trident, but want little more kick in the rear, the Daytona 660 engine in the trident would really have me interested...ALOT....but, that isn't an option, so, the R is 3k cheaper, but i would imagine the twin is more suited for daily cruising? but how much more suited? is it better than the R to the degree that its worth the 3k price difference? or is it more nominal where you are better off saving the coin cause the R is maybe better in corners or something. which has more range for weekend day trips with my old duffer harley homies? i know the twin would fit in little better with the cruisers, but more important i don't want to be "that guy" who always is low on gas when everyone else has half a tank.

I think that list is not that great. Having the Street Triple and MT09 on the list, but calling the Z900 too ugly? What the hell, especially the MT09 is one of the ugliest nakeds on the market in my opinion, the Street Triple is actually quite a nice Bike, but the headlights....horrendous. I´ve driven a MT09 (not SP) and I didnt like one thing about it besides the quickshifter and blipper, the seating position is more like a supermoto, which I dont like at all, the handlebars are in a very weird spot, way too high, the risers look awful and look at that exhaust...what is that. I know its hard to meet all the new regulations and stuff but slapping a massive steel box under the bike with no design whatsoever and ugly welds, thats not it. To make it all worse, I dont like the new headlight design at all, the old one was way better, but both are way way way too high killing the line of the bike. As much as I like the R1 and R6, that thing is a design nightmare. Anything under 100hp is a beginner bike? Oh boy...must be an American problem. 90% highway and 10% what you guys call "twisties", basically a road with very minor curves.

Well he did say that “In 2024 anything less than 100hp is just a beginner bike” so there’s your answer right there. Numbers aside, I rode a ninja 650 and it is noticeably weaker than the bikes he’s putting forward. Even the RS, with its 660cc, has 32 more horsepower and in fairness that does kinda put it into another category. IMO there ought to be ‘small mid’ and ‘large mid’.. 1000ps for example divides the middle class in that way.
