@@DanK123 Agreed. Shooting the first part under-exposed so the people and aircraft are basically in silhouette provides some beautiful shots. it feels like this was done for two reasons - the backlighting emphasises the power and size of the machines, and two, so the reheat flames are properly exposed without changing how everything else is exposed. The second (Danger Zone) part is edited together brilliantly to give a sense of the controlled chaos of the fight deck. I'd love to know how they went about capturing the crew so perfectly. Did they spend a lot of time on the ship observing the crew and planned their shots accordingly, or did they shoot a lot of 'B-roll' footage & extract the shots they wanted. Either way, the end result is superb!

it actually took me until 35 years later watching this movie for the first time that in this intro, a small storyline plays out, the theme being "messed up first time, nailed it second time through regroup and teamwork". at 3:03 a Tomcat comes in for a landing and it is a real ugly pancake, the airframe bouncing, struts flexing, cables snapping messily across the deck. The landing signal team looks astonished, as all their heads turn: "we all messed up on that one". Then a crewman puts a hand on a shoulder as to say "that sucked, but let's run it back better." Now for redemption at 3:13: the black crewman with his pointing gesture readies the team's focus on the incoming Tomcat, which hits the wire clean, pulls to a smart stop, and the iconic kick declares it a success.

35 years later and this iconic scene still holds up magnificently, just unreal & amazing! Certainly it was ahead of its time by several years. And the music just draws you right in, that low steady beat that promises much & eventually delivers as it reaches that exciting & unforgettable crescendo! Everything about this scene screams perfection. Words cannot describe how powerfully & euphorically mesmerized I was upon watching this gloriously upbeat scene for the first time as an 11 year old back in the early Fall of 1986, totally blown away & wondrously riveted as I was! Had never seen anything like it. For all the various elements work together harmoniously & fall into place seamlessly, the music, sound of the jets firing up, the lighting & its overall, dream like effect, along with the sublime cinematography, all of it just marvelously knitted together, with the end result being this beautifully surreal, fantastically rendered, trance inducing masterpiece, one that still holds up today!

My dad was an aircraft technician for the French Army. I was born the year Top Gun got released. I got pictures of me as a 4yo kid wearing a pilots helmet way too big for my little head while watching Top Gun and pretending to be Maverick. I grew up with sounds of aircraft motors, smell of kerosene and a neverending love for aviation, for human beings who are able to push the limits to the extreme, for great pioneers who are ready to sacrifice themselves to go beyond. Fast forward to 2022, seeing Top Gun Maverick as a grown up 37 years old had me crushed into tears in a matter of seconds.

Glad you enjoyed the scene. But it’s actually steam escaping from the steam catapults that send the planes to 0-120mph + 20 knots over deck speed in less about 3 seconds. Invented by the British but only the US builds them, being replaced by electro magnetic catapults that are far more expensive and needs humongous electric power.

When I was a kid, the F-14 was THE fighter aircraft of the 80s. My dad was in the USAF, we were stationed at AFBs with F-15s and F-4s...but nothing could compare to the outright aggressive and fearsome look of the F-14 Tomcat. Top Gun immortalized this great airplane for an entire generation of aviation enthusiasts worldwide :)

The intro of this film gets me everytime. I can only imagine the pure adrenaline rush one may get from witnessing an F-14 tomcat entering and taking off from the flight deck. The view of endless ocean at sunset. The SOUND of a jet engine generating enormous thrust. Even the guy at 3:22 doing that leg shimmy once the cables have hooked. You can tell he loves his job! There can't be anything else in the world as exciting as this. I'd give up everything to do stuff like this for a living and be enthusiastic about what I do, being a part of something great. I was 16 when I first saw Top Gun in 1986, since then TG was like the theme of my life, i listened to the soundtrack on the weekends with family, dance the music in parties with friends, played TG nintendo game all night, listened to TG anthem for inspiration when im depressed and feeling down. Today I am 52. We watched TG maverick yesterday here in The woodlands, Texas with my wife and 3 kids. When the movie intro played, my 27 yr old said “pops its the same intro!” and DAMN.. the experience was so unreal.. like I time traveled 36 yrs back! it was pure pure nostalgia, goosebumps all over, i felt like 16 again! the movie brought a childs awe and smile on my face and i was teary eyed at the end.. TG maverick exceeded my expectations! Its as good as the first TG, I will watch again! so anyway.. after watchin the movie on my way home i was slamming my nissan armadas gas pedal like flying an F16 tomcat 😄Thank you so much! its just priceless 😍

My 2 son's and I love that movie so much! My youngest followed his brother's footsteps by going into the Marine Corps, and I'll never forget one of the phone calls to me... He said "Mom!!! This is just like Top Gun!!! It's so cool!!!" . He was 2 years old when the movie came out and he had to watch it at least every other day. When it came out on VHS we of course bought a few because the constant playing of it would wear it out. DVD was awesome, same thing. In the early days of BluRay, he bought it just so that he could watch Top Gun. It really inspired him and I'm so proud of both of my son's, who still currently are serving our country in The United States Marine Corps. I love them both so much! My oldest son loved the movie too but not to the extreme of his brother. 13 days after 9/11, my oldest son was on the bus to Parris Island. So in between the attack and on his way to boot camp, he was amazingly doing so much in such a short time period to join the Marine Corps and be on that bus 13 days later, which was Sept 24th. I am the proudest mother in the world to have my children want to go out and want to serve and protect our country. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

More like 1 in every 2000 even has a chance at getting into the cockpit. IIRC there are less then 3000 active USN pilots at any given moment. Meanwhile obviously, there's a couple hundred thousand non-pilots in the USN.

Navy recruiting did go up after this movie --- but most of them ended up being assholes stuck on a ship --- BORING

And just 5-6,000 men on a ship, they are needed! Though from what I hear the new ships being built carry fewer crew.

Love this opening, probably the best of any movie. The calm melody building up to the roar of those engines, then as soon as those F14's are catapulted off the ship... Danger Zone kicks in!

We Japanese also like this movie. I am grateful to the Self-Defense Force and the US Army for protecting us. The new movie "Maverick" was also very impressed. I work in an emergency hospital, and watching this movie gave me courage. Thank you for Top Gun. And Tom Cruise.🇺🇸🇯🇵

And back in the day there was no or little CGI. Also as well as the 1980s and 1990s having loads of amazing movies with real stunts and practical effects, the 1970s was a great decade for some proper groundbreaking movies - some of which are still relevant today. And back then no movie looked as though it was shot on a Go Pro.

Still one of the great film openings, and practically worth the price of the movie all by itself. Some of the great truths of film are that either A) beautiful cinematography or B) the skillful use of a soundtrack can make any movie seem twice as good as it is. Whatever failings the critics found in it, "Top Gun" had them both in spades.
