I have learnt on thing soft blows cut more harder ones your skull bends and flexs as it's ment to and for whatever the reason tends to bleed less In reality for it to be a setup the crew wouldn't allow it it could go horribly wrong

I don't want to say that Hammond or May are any sort of actual mechanics, but Hammond is pretty decent wrenching on car stuff and May seems decently capable as well. It's just Clarkson that seems to be a half wit when it comes to doing really any sort of physical labor lol.
