    I live out here in the Copper River Valley. Wrangle St. Elias National Park is my back yard. We have conversations like this every flippin day out here. I'd say .338 Win. Mag. for Griz. 10mm side arm. 30-06 for Caribou. 12 gauge for the truck. Ak47 for the Ruskies. Couple.22 for sguirels, the true enemy. Peace

    A .338 Winchester magnum a great choice for distance shooting with scope lol that's how I would go.. But just to carry around hiking ect a Marlin1895 45-70 6+1 would be my first choice.. Only heard about a 10mm they say its perfect..but I'll stick to a S&W v460 magnum 5 shot..probably only get 1 shot on the bear if we surprised each other not saying I'd live thur the Encounter..

    Being a retired LEO, my arsenal for the wilderness hunting includes: Remington 700, 30-06 Springfield rifle; police extended barrel Stoeger 12 gauge shotgun with a pistol grip; and a double-action S&W .45 colt revolver. However, if I hunted in Alaska, I would upgrade to probably a .338 Win mag. rifle. I prefer a revolver in the wilderness because I don't have time to clear a jam in my semi-auto when charged by a bear. Just a word to the wise; If you are planning to purchase a large caliber rifle with a man-made stock for the weight, a muzzle break or suppressor installed is a must.

    I found it interesting that the 30-06 was not mentioned. Although the 7mm has advatnages over the 30-06 , the 30-06 has some advantages . First, the 30-06 can fire bullets ranging from 110 grain up to 220 grain and you can handload these rounds. 30-06 ammo from, from what I understand, is more available and you can handload it easier versus the 7mm. Just a thought

  • @AlaskanBallistics

    @AlaskanBallistics

    11 ай бұрын

    Handload easier? All handloading is about the same. .30-06 is not as powerful as 7mm Rem mag nor as flat of shooting and has a lower b.c. for the same bullet weight

    Hey Chuck, I'm looking to possibly move to SE Alaska for a job and was wondering about the handgun I have. I carry a Glock 30s with hornady critical duty .45+p, great for people but what do you think about using it in a bear defense role as well? Do I need to try to get a .460 Rowland conversion upper or is .45acp+p probably enough? Atleast to start out with and I will upgrade later.

  • @AlaskanBallistics

    @AlaskanBallistics

    5 жыл бұрын

    I carried mine as a back up to my g21 before I could to afford to buy some guns... 200gr +p speer lawman tmj bonded would be the thing to carry. But no not my first choice. The .460 Rowland or .45 Super conversions are good but require you change out the mag springs which makes it tough to get all the rounds in there. My advice keep your 30, and if you want that size gun, get a 29.. same holsters. G40 10mm reigns supreme. I've got several videos on my g21 .45 super conversion as well

    I think a big game rifle and a bear defense rifle could be one rifle, a 375H&H or Ruger. The H&H is the classic, but the 375 Ruger can get to decent working velocity out of a 20in barrel for handiness in tight quarters.

    @@AlaskanBallistics ha ha! You notice I didn’t say it replaced 3 categories! You still need a meat hunting rifle. The 375 is for the biggest, moose. However, if one hunts in a brushy country where game is taken from a 100 yards or less, (kind of like normal 45-70 kind of hunting) you can hand load 220 grain bullets meant for the 375 win with 5744 powder and have some serious loads underneath in the mag because I have heard that in some places, when the bears hear a rifle shot, they come running like it was a dinner bell! I have to say that would get on my nerves!

    45-70 HMS 430gr +P hardcast flatnose gas checked bullets....or maybe a 225gr+P extreme hunter from Underwoods it would definitely go thur the bear...Going to test it on a old bowling ball this week. And 12 water jugs all with 1gallon of water in them..I'm a Marlin 1895 45-70 government kind of guy...But if hunting one I'd prefer a good scope and a .338 or .375 H&H

    So would a 10MM Glock be worth it in bear country? I live in Indiana and we have it easy we are the apex predator, I couldn’t imagine deer hunting with bears in woods yeah I’ve seen things in woods that they say our not here I’ve seen a wild hog boar I’ve seen a wolf and I’ve seen elk, but they was all pets they got loose over the years, wild bear man that takes some balls

    Stopping a bear is all about shot placement and bullet construction... people have done it with less and .357 mag was the default for years before the 44 mag came out. 10mm just barely eeks out .357magnum in my video and you get 16 shots

    Actually it’s “good luck” getting any round off as you would have to be gun up, ready to pull the trigger to do any possible good for yourself But research (one anyway) shows bear spray is better than a gun......but nothing is 100%, if you believe that gun will save ya then so be it.
