As a Costa Rican, You know if you’re gonna visit a country and you don’t speak the language the least you could do is learn how to pronounce the name of the country correctly. Like how hard is it to pronounce coast.

On these travel advice videos about Costa Rica, I like to mention to tourists about a uniquely Costa Rican thing - you're in San Jose, or one the suburbs, and come to an intersection and it has a stop sign, AND a traffic light. What to do? Well, if the traffic light is green, you proceed through the intersection, if it's red, you stop until it turns green. The Stop sign is there for the numerous occasions when the electricity goes out, and the traffic light doesn't function. The sign then is to be obeyed. Also, traffic lights just sort of hang there, and are used for all four sides. So, they're difficult to see, and I would suggest you hang back at an intersection to be able to see the light through your windshield when stopped. You can't be a timid or doodling driver down here, I like to refer to driving here, as being defensively aggressive. Pay attention at all times, and don't get distracted. I tell my passengers from up north to not point out anything they find interesting, and let me drive without distractions. I constantly check my mirrors for motos, as they're always surrounding you. This is more applicable to urban areas, which you may never get too. I also drive with a dash cam, it's a witness that doesn't lie, and makes me a better driver because I don't want it recording me doing something stupid if I do need it as a witness. Tico drivers for the most part, are quite courteous, and will allow you in, or to turn at difficult intersections. A quick flash of the emergency lights, a quick beep of the horn, or a thumbs up is their way of saying 'thank you', and you should do the same when you're shown a courtesy.

I didn't think prices were bad, besides 1 or 2 obviously touristy places that i ate at. 1st time i went was 300$ for a week at an air-bnb and 300$ round trip flight. And definitely local money (from bank) not the airport... much better exchange rate.

Regarding scorpions in Costa Rica. Their sting is less painful and less harmful that that of a honey bee.. Since learning of that I like catching them by the tail. is not as cheap as neighboring Panama or Nicaragua, with experience it is very inexpensive. But f I live here and rent a 7 bedroom/5 bath house with 3 car garage on 23 acres foe $161 a month. Lesson learned long ago, rent and do business with Costa Ricans not North Americans here. And taxis charge me less than they do my Costa Rican wife or others. In fact locally taxis all give me free rides knowing I will pay them more than if they asked an amount. I do not drive here. I walk and bike and stay healthy. In rainy weather or over 12 kilometers I am known to take taxis or the bus.. As for Tamarindo , yeah that place is as expensive as Hawaii, caused again by too many North Americans..

And choose not to ruin things by a bunch of American Pilgrims moving into the area. I left the US as much to be away from Americans as I did to be away from its government and the rest. Not about to surround myself with it here. I moved here because I like it and in no way want to change anything. For that my Costa Rican neighbiors not only treat me like one of them, but as family.

Don't pay full price. Tourists pay double what residents pay for adventures. You can very often work out a lower price. Example: a couple girls wanted to go parasailing and the price was $150 for 2 people. I got the price down to $100 for them. Also if you are going to Manuel Antonio you don't need an expensive car rental. You can take a bus to Manuel or Quepos and there use taxis or the local busses. from downtown San Jose the direct bus to Manuel or Quepos is $10. Local busses are around $.50

They won't accept 3rd party car insurance for tourists. A hidden secrete we know is to go directly to INS, they have agents, and buy your insurance from them, it's relatively cheap. INS is the government run insurance agency. The car rental companies won't like it because it cuts them out of juice commission. Before you come to CR, look up INS and get a hold of an agent. You do need the MANDATORY liability insurance, which can cost $13 to $25 a day. Most car rental companies will not disclose that online. There are a few that are upfront about this, and I would suggest you rent from them. This is not covered by your credit card insurance. If you can provide a credible source to back up your claim, please do so. Costa Rica is an outlier for renting vehicles. Some credit card companies exclude Costa Rica, or won't permit travel off of a paved road, good luck with that in Costa Rica. You really need to do your homework here, and know exactly what you're getting, and how much it will cost. Also, I believe renting at the airport will cost you $12 a day more? Take pictures or video before driving off indicating all the previous damages. Some companies are notorious for charging for prior damage. Other companies are great to deal with, and may not be the well known international chains. The bad ones are exposed in reviews.

@@ADVENTURECAMPitelli Very true, my friends that come here don't do that the the CC company does block their card until they prove to the CC company they are in CR. Also, DON'T CARRY YOUR PASSPORT, carry a copy.....except when you go to exchange money in the banks, then you will need the original PP. Supermarkets accept $$ and do give you a good rate, same as a bank. We have Walmart and I use $$ there sometimes, saves me a trip to the bank. Also, when you exchange money, go to the government owned banks, much better exchange rate than private banks like Scotia or ProAmerica.

Thanks for sharing! I've been to Costa Rica three times. And I've seen some changes.... The first time I went to Costar Rica was in 1997. They made paper from banana peels adn we would see people really caring for the environment and being sustainable. They were much thinner than now. The restaurants provided typical food and international food (not fast food). When we turned on the radio, we would listen to salsa, merengue, cumbia.... When I went back there in 2011 and then again in 2015, there were lots of fast food restaurants, so a lot of fat people. The music on the radio was in English...It was very difficult to find a place to dance salsa and merengue. They know how important it is to be sustainable and to preserve the nature but, in my opinion it is fundamental to maintain their culture! And about tourists, the most important DON'T is Don't leave trash all around... Pick up your trash!!

I've lived in CR for 20+ years and cities are not that interesting, there are a few nice places because some owners have good taste, but in general architecture is pretty bad, a lot of ugly fences, barbwire, no regulations, no matching colors and styles of facades. Interesting cities, to me, are in Europe or Japan. Here in CR, the best is diversity of plants, animals, nice beaches, mountains, and stable weather year long, although it can rain a lot between May and October.

I have lived in CR for 20+ years and what you have said is basically true and factual. Yes, when I first came here, it was cheap. Now it's very expensive unless you live like a Tico. Which I do. Food is fairly cheap. Meat is expensive and horrible. Chicken is cheap as well as pork. Gasoline right now is about $4.50 a gallon, but you don't drive that far. Remember, it's a small country but because the roads are in poor condition, it's takes you a long time to get from point A to point B. Personally I prefer Nicaragua, it's much cheaper but it's a real culture shock to those wanting to live there and Ortega and the government are unstable. Taxes here are getting out of hand, the big daddy government is taxing everything. I really am considering going to live in Nicalandia, let's see what the elections do.
