Miri is a Malaysian city on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo. At the Petroleum Museum, on Canada Hill, hands-on exhibits explore the region’s oil history. Outside is the Grand Old Lady, a 1910 oil well and local landmark. In the city center, vendors at Pasar Raya and Tamu Muhibbah markets offer fresh produce and handicrafts.
The local population in Miri has indeed started to extract oil from hand-dug wells for centuries. Historian found a documentation from the Song dynasty of China, mentioning the imports of Borneo petroleum in the 11th century.
On December 1910, oil was struck after 130 metres (430 ft) of drilling at the well. Since then, another 624 land wells have been drilled around Miri until 1972 which are collectively known as the "Miri field".
Miri grew as fast as the rate of oil production by the Shell company.
In 1920, roads were built in Miri. By 1921, there were 40 shop houses in Miri.
Eyeing on the oil fields, on 16 December 1941, the Japanese troops landed on Tanjung Lobang Beach, Miri without much resistance.
After the fall of Singapore on 15 January 1942, skilled workers that went into hiding with their equipment were sent back to Miri by the Japanese. They were immediately put to work for the Japanese oil supply.
After the war, the Oil exploration moved offshore,
In 1974, the formation of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas led to co-operation between Petronas and Shell.
In 2005, Miri was upgraded to city status becoming Malaysia’s 10th city.

TQ CK for introducing Miri & some of its food 😊 my beloved hometown ❤❤❤ To some ppl the hainanese curry rice mayb overrated , but for some Mirian , we grew up eating it. It is a nostalgic feel / taste. I like it just the way it is , for its uniqueness And bear in mind , tat chicken curry rice at Open air market is 1938 version 😊 Thus , shudnt compare the curry taste with wat we are familiar with 😅

as far as i know, the old form of Hainanese Curry Rice in Kuching here was to imitate the Indian's curry through using different spices by Hainanese. where they used starch powder, pepper, etc

hahaha in past, when they migrated to Sarawak and settled at Kuching waterfront's Carpenter Street, Hainanese's main business was selling food. often, you see very old kopitiam (Asian coffee shop that serves breakfast, lunch along with beverage) or restaurant with its name containing 瓊 or 琼 (qiong) word are belonged to Hainanese. you can find many in Kuching. Hainanese was well-known for their culinary. even hired by British or Brooke as chef if I remember correctly. you may try Hainanese coffee + butter at corner of Indian Street. it is used to soothe the throat after smoke the opium. @@CKology

Local Mirian here…You missed out Tutu fish in Bekenu… good that u found HILLTOP kitchen, one of my favourite place. The hainan rice and that kolok mee is overrated. Seafood, the best still at Yihahai

Most people in Sarawak hates Taib Mahmood. He pillaged Sarawak's resources for his own. Read Sarawak reports to understand more. Not really a good example of famous people from Miri. Especially a corrupted politician. One of the most corrupt people in Malaysia. Najib is peanut compare to him.
