the problem with the Blackwing would be that due to EU regulations it would get quieter and would cost significantly more. A Mustang in Germany (V8 Model) will cost you about 50% more, than in the US. So the Cadillac will sell for about 120k here in Europe. The M5 starts at 105k here. So you‘re right. The price-advantage you get with american cars in the US doesn’t really transfer to the EU, cause the taxes that make European cars expensive in the US apply to American cars over-here.
hi, austrian here. although for italy your arguments about kei cars might be true, i can tell you that at least for austria, germany and many other surrounding countries things like the size don't really matter. For example, even in cities like vienna, a kei car can't fit in places cars like the fiat panda or vw polo can't fit in. It's mostly about the price and fuel economy here and because of the weird shape/proportions, kei cars have such high aerodynamic drag that their smaller size doesn't make them better on gas than a normal european compact. Also they would cost about the same as a entry level compact here if you add the local, in most cases really high, taxes and import fees. Add to that that most people here are really stubborn concerning non european car manufacturers and you can see that they wouldn't work here.
@hk20000
Жыл бұрын
You say that but did you see modern kei car fuel economy numbers? They best the Prius at their own game and they churn out 28 to 30km to a litre of petrol.... That is a number the panda and polo can't even dream to manage. However in practice the kei class of cars actually will fail many euro ncap safety tests so....there is that one for ya.

@@hk20000 under 80-100km/h aerodynamic doesn't matter much, especially if the size is so small... And nobody will ever drive a kei car (or a Panda) on an Autobhan. In the city, the engine and weight are the only things that matter regarding the fuel consumption. The kei cars would need to be mass produced locally, bcs right now they would be very expensive compared to the already mass produced Panda, given the low volume of production and import fees.

Kei cars and citycars should have 100+ hp in order to become usefull outside the cities, and have better anti-noise protection... Thus being heavier. This would make them "less citycar".

That last example (BMW) just shows perfectly why big corporations are just so out of touch with the real world. The people who make the decisions don't listen or care about their customers and with all their experience and education still decided to try and sell manual cars to customer base who couldn't care less about stick shift. And then there are those who would prefer manual shift because its more fun even though it may be slower (in gear changes) but can't buy it because those in charge decided against their wishes. Anyway, rant over. Great video again, worth the wait for the humour 😀

HSV Maloo UTE was also released as Chevrolet Lumina SS UTE in South Africa. It's the same car based on the Commodore in Australia with different badges and headlights. the US market Lumina name was slapped on a huge awkwardly styled saloon, and an even more awkwardly styled MPV, and appeared during the emission strangled slushbox era right at the start of the "curvy cars" theme...and the whole of the mid eighties to today permanently tainted the american taste for anything curvy that isn't a corvette.
I think Kei cars should have a target here in Brazil as well! Some streets are really tiny, and some roads even more bumpy and uncomfortable. And because they're practical, it could be a hit here with the right prices!

for the last one, BMW sells M4 and M3 with manual gearbox, but the manual ones are like the 5% of the market. That's because in Europe the manual is the "everyday gearbox" and the auto/dual-clutch is the "sporty one", while in the US the auto is for everyday and the manual is sporty.

I don't agree on the Phideon. Sedans are not really popular anymore, the Phideon (which I love) would only sell if it was a Wagon. As a real A6 alternative, because pretty much every A6 here in Germany and Europe at large is a wagon. The Cadillac CT5-V BW is great though and I would have liked to see them bring it here to the European market. Not that it could really compete with the M5 and E63 in terms of sales, and definitely not with the M5 CS or GT 63 in terms of performance, but it would be a nice boutique option for people that want something special. Similar to why the A110 and Giulia Quadrifoglio compete with the Cayman and M3/C63. A car I would have added would be the Mercedes X-Class and VW Amarok. The X-Class was a Mercedes Pickup based on a Nissan while the Amarok was all VW and had a V6 TDI (the Amarok also looked very nice in my opinion). The X-Class was canceled and the new Amarok is based on the Ford Ranger. If Mercedes would have offered the X-Class in the US I could have seen it being much more successful. While the Amarok would have been great with a dedicated off-road trim similar to a Tacoma TRD pro. Although, if I was Mercedes I would have built a Pickup on the basis of the G-Class, which would be a great template for that. Offering an off road performance luxury pickup. Something like G63 with a bed and offroady tires. It would have sold like hot cakes with many people being willing to spend well above 100K on a Pickup in the US.

Well, the main reason Kei cars are not sold in Europe is that in the 80s, they banned Japanese companies from selling on their turf, and after problems like that, they would not risk selling Kei cars now as they would endanger local car companies like Fiat and eat into their profit, which they would not like and it would be 80s all over again
they used to sell a lot of kei vans in Europe, they had the engines replaced with something bigger but otherwise the same, the reason they don't sell them anymore is they did not meet the crash safety regulations... Besides they were too slow, people casually drive at 140-160kph outside city.

I believe the Ford Fiesta and Focus would sell well if they were brought back, same with the Toyota hilux, great reliable dependable vehicles, fan favourites
Fact: New BRZ has a huge weight reduction with aluminium sus from GR86's steel one, but still offered at a noticably lower price. The alunimium sus also eliminates extra oversteer so that u go faster on tracks. And our anime influenced fellas would choose a GR86 over a BRZ without a think. lol
I think the argument about the M5 manual is overlooking something. European firms’ bread and butter are very affordable cars. Little hatches and city cars, that most North American buyers have never heard of. They usually come with manual only to keep costs down. I watch a lot of European car media and I got the feeling for the performance market, more manuals offerings are stateside. So yes, 80% of cars in Europe are manual, but only a small proportion of those are cars that you and I would pay attention to.
When i was on holidays in Italy, driving mk3 Octavia it was not fun time driving in cities. But could be worse, seen many people struggle in SUV´s.

I think Kei Cars should work alright in Europe but their image is the same as a Smart Car's: Do not use this outside of town, it's inadequate everywhere else! And as long as there are cheap Smart cars, VW Ups and Aygos...why pick anything else that's MORE quirky and less agile? In Europe there's usually some space between cities and you don't want to own a car but use rail everywhere
also considering how popular the vw ute was in europe i could see the maloo sell in europe too (altho maybe with a more fuel efficent engine)
@BatMan-oe2gh

Maloo only had the V8. You would have to get the standard Ute with the V6.
The new Caddy is pretty cool. It sounds amazing. It's probably going to be a lot more expensive to run and maintain in Europe with gas prices. But you could buy the MT Blackwing and have 40k euro for gas and tyres. The Honda E would be one of the coolest EVs to have in the States. Way cooler than any other EV in its price range. Way cooler.

Here in Brazil, the fiat panda is called UNO. one of the best fuel economy car here
Actually the Camaro used the Holden/HSV Chassis called the Zeta platform.
For one, the Honda E would do very nice here, in a four door configuration, to compete with the Prius Leaf and other EVs. The Maloo could have been a low production truck, but when Pontiac was axed, everything went down the crapper. Life is too damn fast and hectic here in America for a manual in practical use, but it's still fun to drive on the weekends.
a modernised vw beetle with modern tech to get better fuel milage and power while retaining the rear boxer engine and basic bodyshape would sell like icecream on a hot day in todays market, cheap, efficient and practical while also being a classic and good looking compared to those boxes most companies are puting out nowadays

Note: a few rebadged Kei cars have been sold in Europe! The Suzuki Wagon R (and its successor, the Splash) was sold as the Opel/Vauxhall Agila up until 2015.
The main reason the US never got the HSV Maloo (or its less-extroverted brother, the Holden Commodore Ute) can be summed up in two words - 'Chicken Tax'. Given that the Commodore was built on the same platform as the 5th-generation Camaro, I always wondered if it might have been possible to assemble the various Commodore models (sedan, wagon and ute) from CKD kits in the same factory as the Camaro. This would have given GM a direct competitor to the Dodge Charger / Chrysler 300, and a unique vehicle that nobody else in the US market had. It would also have increased Holden's parts production volume, although I'm not sure if it would have been enough to prevent their closure.
Due to the import taxes based on engine size in Europe, US cars become more expensive than local , in greece a 2006 c6 Corvette base edition cost more than 40k euro the new mustang v8 more than 120k after taxes

As for kei cars in Europe, in late 90s and early 2000s Daewoo tried to sell some rebadged models, but besides Poland which was in need for any cheap car it flopped. Also Daewoo reputation ofc. As for the new ones, impprting costs would rise a price for those a lot, and no one would risk producing it in Europe in case sales would be too low. So Pandas would be cheaper. Also those tiny kei car engines don't meet strict EU emission standards and are rather high revving, while european engines are designed for low end more.
