Top 6 Bow Hunting Tips for Accurate Archery Shooting 101

Спорт

In this video you'll hear about some quick, basic archery tips that can help both beginners and "experts" just as they help Phil and Riley be more accurate and consistent as they shoot whether for fun and target practice or during the hunt. Riley starts with his tips and his brand new Mathews Traverse bow walking you through 3 things that work for him. Phil follows by talking about anchor points, grip and over drawing. We both put plenty of arrows (both field point and broad heads) into our Block Targets and it pays off when the season comes around. We don't claim to be experts but we hope our simple basic tips can help you improve as well.

    This is one of the top comments we get and I have shot in league for years and watched many great shooters draw across their chest. What is the actual problem with drawing across the chest versus higher? From my perspective, the lower you draw it the more the larger muscles in your back can engage, the higher it is the more stress on your shoulder/smaller muscles which leads to less smooth draws and more struggle. I have tried drawing higher and I consistently shoot better when I come into my anchor points from below.

  • @clintskeens

    From experience when you draw across the chest it's because your drawing to much weight, for me when I draw with my elbow up I can get to my anchor alot quicker and I'm on target faster as well and in a hunting situation it's a lot less movement.

    Hey I was just wondering if you could help me out, I bought a new bow and at 20 feet it’s dead on split an arrow accurate, I go back 10 more feet it’s still accurate then I go to 20 yards and it never hits the same spot it’s either high or low and I’ve tried everything, I don’t know if it’s my release or my bow is just messed up

  • @WeekendWoodsmen

    It could be something in your mechanics or tuning. The further back you move the more mechanics and tuning issues become obvious. Are you brand new to bow shooting? How much high or low are you missing by? Understanding those first will help. However regardless I would start with paper tuning if you haven’t already and then either bare shaft tune or broadheads tune. Reminder to ALWAYS shoot your hunting broadheads and setup before hitting the field.

    I think for being a brand new bow shooter you are being too hard on yourself 🙂 Focus your eyes on the target, do NOT look at the pin, keep both eyes open and concentrate on executing the shot. Over time you should be able to bring your groups tighter. Was your bow paper tuned by yourself or the shop when you bought it?

  • @WeekendWoodsmen

    @WeekendWoodsmen

    70lbs. Not sure how, when you draw lower you engage the larger muscles in your back and you aren’t using your shoulder as much. Just like if you are at full draw and you need to hold for a long time you can hold longer if you lower the bow

    You draw the bow back incorrectly I'm 58 years old if I drew the bow back like you do my shoulder would be blown out by now. For the health of your shoulder you should learn how to draw the bow with your elbow up take some lessons my friend it'll save your shoulder

  • @WeekendWoodsmen

    @WeekendWoodsmen

    I played baseball for years so my shoulder is already crap 🤣. I have heard similar feedback and tried doing that and it made my shoulder feel worse. To me lowering your elbow actually disengages your shoulder and engages the large muscles in your back like an upright row. I appreciate the comment and looking out for my shoulder I plan to keep trying because it gets me to my anchor points sooner.

    Your points are good but man you have a pretty bad draw of your bow. Your elbow is under your nipple line and it really should be around eye level.

  • @WeekendWoodsmen

    Hear that a lot but I really don’t see the point in using the smaller muscles in your shoulders when you can use the big muscles in your back and I also like to come into anchor from below rather than straight back. I have tried it, but never felt comfortable getting into anchor that way. And if a deer catches me mid draw it’s a heck of a lot easier to hold it when you are drawing lower.

    The bow gets back and gets anchored, don’t really care how it gets back there. Some of the best shooters I know draw low and come up. Never really understood why you would want to draw the bow up high across your face using mostly your smaller shoulder muscles when you can control the slow draw much better by being lower and using the larger muscles of your back and then bringing it into place, especially when you have bad shoulders, that’s a lot of stress on those muscles.
