    Overwhelming majority of us are not good enough where any of these "reliefs" would make much of a difference. I see people give themselves better lies and lines all the time, but they are struggling to break 90-100, and frankly, if it helps the pace of play, I don't care. They will not playing to win a tournament anytime soon.

  • @hobo7070

    @@lylealexander4861 maybe maybe not. In my experience, these players do not necessarily hit a decent shot from the unauthorized relief. In other words, they are not good enough to consistently take advantage of the relief to make a different (e.g. topping a ball from a divot versus topping the ball after improving its lie -- either way, its a topped ball). No way to really know for sure. Regardless, I'd much rather they hit 90-100 with the unauthorized relief than slowing up the pace of play hitting 100-120...round of golf is already slow enough.

    I started playing golf about 5 months ago. A few of my friends like to bet when we play. My average is about 110-115. After 18 holes, they usually beat me about 3-4 points. Found out that they moved their ball a few inches here and there to get a good lie. When thought that the ball has to stay wherever it landed. When I asked them, they said we're not pro so anyone of us can move the ball, including me. Since I've been doing that, I dropped about 6-10 strokes so I shot, 100, 101, 98, 105 and 102 the last 5 times I played. I don't think it's coincidence. It definitely made a difference.

    What do you think of gimme putts/mulligans/skipping penalty strokes (ie hit ball in the woods then hit 2 from the tee, or dropping next to the woods and hitting 3 from there) during your rounds where you are trying to break scoring barriers? Same question for when you claim a new all time lowest score (but with 2 mulligans and a 3-4ft gimme putt for example)? Fairly new to the game so I was interested in hearing your perspective on this

    You want find out if someone has character just play golf with them. I tell everyone you play the way you always play. The way they play doesn't effect my score. God know the real score and so does most of the people they play with.

    I always like it when people move their ball and claim certain rules for different seasons in the year. Unless it is ground under repair or a man made object… play it as it lies!!!

    Casual money or not, I play the root rule. I'm not rich enough to go breaking clubs on roots when its totally reasonable to move the ball away some. If it isn't USGA, then don't break your club over a few bucks.

    I've never seen anyone in our group do any of these things??? Most problems arise from someone NOT hitting a provisional, and then instead of declaring a lost ball and going back and re-teeing, they just put a ball out approximately where they entered the woods and adding a stroke and playing on. It's stroke and distance for a lost ball. Most of this video does not apply to the people I play with.

    one guy notoriously find is ball in the high fescue and then looks for the green/landing spot, all the while tramping the grass in a circle around his ball. not only improving his lie 100% but clearing his stroke 1000%

    Is it technically cheating to funk your stance a bit and get relief from the path? Or is that just using the rules to your advantage? I think if a guy does that, you just tip your hat to him and let him drop, no?

    Question: Can you deny your playing partner a provisional ball?

  • @michaelj170

    @michaelj170

    Rule 18.3 deals with provisional balls. It does not state that you can deny your playing partner a provisional ball. My suggestion is to check before the match begins as to which ball and number they are playing. When another player states that they are playing a provisional ball, you ask to see what number on the ball that they are going to use. Make sure that they are marked differently.

    It is legal to move the ball away from a root, but it must be nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole, and dropped, not placed.

    I believe only if the root is in the fairway or marked as gur. Otherwise I believe you have to declare unplayable if you wish to move it.

    Great vid overall but "the score already doesn't even really count"... Uhh, if the local rule that day is for lift, clean, and place then the score is just as legit as when the pros get that advantage in a real tourney. Granted the tour will only go that route in very bad conditions while your local may opt that way for mush less but still...

    The best is when golfers give themselves 3 footers or more on their putts because their frustrated. "Dude, I need to see that". Golfers who start making excuses before they tee off and keep making them. Dude, you're a crappy golfer. That 7 iron you hit well once today is not your standard of play. Golfers saying they shot 85 last week and there's nothing in their golf game that will make you think they broke 100. Golfers who finally par a hole and say, "that's more like it". They're 20 over and we're on the 6th hole. So many.
