For sixty plus years, we have been lead to believe that India is a poor country and cannot afford the luxury of such facilities. It is great that even amidst tensions with neighbouring countries and pandemic in the country, such projects are going ahead. These tunnels requires contant and good quality maintenance. Otherwise, they deterioriate soon due to rain and water logging. I have traveled in Alps of Europe. This mountain range is cut across with scores of tunnels ranging in length from a couple of kilometers to maximum 17 KM. They save enormous of journey time between northern and southern europe, not to speak of saving on millions of tons of fuel every year. Almost all of them are maintained in excellent condition. I hope India will emulate them in maintaining the tunnels.
