Ron Asheton has made some of the badass riffs in rock music, literally any of his riffs could make it to your top 5 and I wouldn't argue. lmao

Some of the badass riffs. Not ALL, but some of ‘em.
J Mascis said that Ron Asheton taught him how to properly play TV Eye. He said “when you bend the 7th fret of the G string, you also play the 8th fret on the B string.” I don’t think you are supposed bend the 8th fret B string, just keep it straight while bending the 7th fret G string, but I’m sure a little bend won’t be a problem lol.

Thanks for posting this, because everyone's TV eye always sounds a little bit too sharp.
Ron Ashton, such an influential yet somewhat overlooked guitar player. Everything here is amazing. I wanna be your dog has to be one of the greatest riffs in all of rock. Simple. Original. Brilliant
The 1st album is mostly Flying V into a Marshall and a strat for funhouse. the fuzz is a vox tonebender, which is a brighter version of a fuzz face, some people say he used a fuzzrite too. There are live photos with the tonebender so he definitely used that at least live.

Riff 1: 0:54 TV Eye Riff 2: 3:43 No Fun Riff 3: 7:15 1969 Riff 4: 10:37 Down on the Street Riff 5: 14:16 I Wanna Be Your Dog
Iggy told this weekend in his superb radio show on BBC4 "Confidential" that they were totally influenced by first Pink Floyd album, specially with guitar phrases and tones by Syd Barret. He played Interstellar Overdrive to ilustrate that, think now in I Wanna be yr Dog main riff and connect the spots. Syd was a primitive player but his tone ideas were incredible. East Bay Ray of Dead Kennedys also recognizes that when developing that piercing killer short-delay tone. 🤘

Funhouse is probably my all-time favourite record, and The Stooges one of my top five favourite bands. Thanks for the fantastic lesson, Adrian!

Oh man, yes that is an insanely good record. Raw Power is awesome, but for me Funhouse is the best. If I end up on a ventilator I really want them to put headphones on me and loop "Loose". I'm pretty sure they will find me with the tube pulled out and thrashing against a wall with my ass hanging out of the hospital gown. If I don't make it, well I can think of much worse ways to go out.

Great choice.Ron Asheton is definitely one of the greats
Saw Ron a bunch of times in late 70s/early 80s with Destroy All Monsters in Chicago. Not sure if more than 2% of the audience even knew who he was. And thanks for putting 1969 in your video, man.
“I’m looking for one new value, but nothing comes my way.” Great stuff.
My ears will never forgive me for listening to T.V. Eye late at night

Isn't that a killer riff?! I love James Williamson too, but Ron is my man. He played a killer bass on RAW POWER. I was lucky enough to see THE STOOGES on their reunion tour. RIP ASHETON BROTHERS
Your channel keeps getting better and better. You pack a lot of quality instruction into a relativley short space. And great fun to watch too.
Adrian you always blow me away with your lesson choices, brilliant video!
just now put this together - TV Eye had to be the inspiration for Sleep Now in the Fire. great vid!
Oh. You again. You're the geezer that taught me The Damned Fan club. Cheers
These are brilliant. Great to see you rocking on your toes......thanks Adrian.
*PS: I know Ron used a Stratocaster for Fun House and a Vox Wah (You can see his guitar on the CD booklet)*

On the first record he used a Gibson Flying V and strat into a Marshall supa fuzz and vox when into Marshall super lead on 9
Thank you!!! He’s so well deserved of being remembered. Fun House is the ultimate LP!
My friend, you are one of the best posters ever. I watch everything you post. You’re the only musician that I can watch the whole channel, let it flow...
Great lesson, my top 5 would be very close to yours: 5 I Wanna Be Your Dog (first song i ever learned !) 4 Down On The Streets 3 Loose 2 No Fun 1 1969
This was an awesome lesson. Thank you for your impeccable taste in music
Vale Ron. Your music will live forever.
One of my favourite online lessons. I often watch this just for fun. Loving the standing up . I try to practice standing up when possible, I don't sit down live. Thanks for the quality lessons. Nicely leftfield
Thanks so much for this, Adrian! Such simple riffs but there's so much attitude and expression in them. I've never been able to get the feel for "TV Eye" but after watching this I think I know what I was doing wrong. You've inspired me to try and teach myself "Loose" today! Cheers!
merci merci encore merci pour vos influences pour votre pédagogie et votre passions pour Ron !! comme vous je pense qu'il est les plus grand du son Proto !! YEAHHHH
Thanks so much for all your posts. I am across the pond in the US, as they say. Feel like I found a kindred soul in terms of a teacher who likes almost exactly the music I like. So much that I became a patron. Thanks so much!
Ron made such great guitar-riffs and he tops it off with being the most amazing bass-player ever. Thanks for this vid!
Superb breakdown of these riffs! thanks and bravo sir
The Stooges are my favorite band. Full stop. Ron knew how to rip a simple line that could make you move. He hits the essence of rock/blues guitar, make the people move with as little effort as possible while feeling good. Awesome video man
Buzzing to see this cant wait to learn these over the weekend, new JHS legends of fuzz bender just came today funnily enough 😎 loved learning the nile rodgers riffs too
T.V. Eye has always given me a headache while trying to learn it. I'll give this a go!
It’s interesting that the “secret” to the riff to Be Your Dog is the droney E, it gives the song such a cool vibe. Since John Cale was the producer and he loved droney stuff, like Venus in Furs etc, I wonder if he had an effect on Ron’s playing
@gusironside3735

Ron got the drone from listening to Ravi Shanker, before Cale got involved.
Ron Rocked a candy apple red strat with a fuzz and wah through a wall of Marshalls but this video is about his best riffs not tones. And this is awesome I'm glad someone is giving Ron some love!!!
So glad to see someone doing this I’ve been subbed for ages absolutely love the channel! Ron Asheton is so underrated and definitely too good to play bass in my opinion haha amazing player and also amazing video!
Thanks for this. Ron was a guitar God !! Full on germanium fuzz box misuse all the way 🖤 You're the best guitar tutor on here ! Keep up the good work 👌
the first time ive seen you was xlnt Morricone guitar...now the Stooges !!! you got it all going onman well done thanks
As a bass player, I'm really enjoying your riff breakdowns and using them to make a bassline
Thanks a lot Adrian! It was nice to see you moving around for the first time--a reminder that music like this is not appropriately played sitting down. (And congratulations on the haircut! I really must try that sometime too.)
So nice playing along on I Wanne Be Your Dog, and Adrian breaking into the solo part
Been waiting for this all of my life
This is fantastic, thank you. Would it be possible for you to do the same with five Wipers songs?

Great lesson, you really nailed his sound and feel! 👍😎
Ron was a phenomenally impactful and, influential guitar player!!! He was an even more phenomenal bass player...a relentless and ruthless bass assassin
Another great lesson! Thank you so much.
Best you ever sounded! Amazing tone!
great job Adrian - many thanks!
Absolutely brilliant!!! Thank you 🎸🎸🎸
awesome video! some of my favorite guitar music ever! 1969 had me moving in my seat
Thank you for making these!
How did I miss this? Dude.. the SV20H and Gibby look amazing.
so simple yet so evocative. awesome
Que buen trabajo. Gracias.
You are just a really excellent guitar human. Thank you
Great video with some fantastic Asheton riffs. But I have to admit I shake my head at so many comments focusing on the gear. "Actually, it was a flying v into a vox tonebender...with this specific model Marshall..." It's amazing how obsessed some fans are with the gear, far more so than the artist themselves who created it. The irony of that mentality is that it also misses the entire point. If all Asheton had was a Danelectro with lipstick pickups he would have turned everything to 10 and it would have sounded just as good. And today, the gear obsessed would be saying, "Actually, he used a Danelectro with hand-wound pickups into a Marshall speaker with a 2 1/4" tear. But first you have to pour half a Heineken, warmed to 78 degrees, onto the speaker terminals..."
Muy bueno ! Very good ! At least some Asheton riffs and his Link Wray influenced acid guitar !
legendary lesson dude! you have the best music taste, this was awesome!
Wow, nuts! You have Ron's tone down perfectly.
Thank you very much for another excellent lesson.

Photos from the first album sessions show Ron playing a Strat, but there’s also definitely the sound of a Gibson Flying V on there too. So he probably used both guitars on the first LP. I hear a silicon based fuzz on that too. On Funhouse Ron told me he used a Strat through a 50 watt Marshall head and a 8x10 Marshall speaker cab. Good job on nailing those tones.
I have to say, I do love your thumbnails
Groovy Adrian !
Rock n roll.cheers for the lesson ✌️
Hi Adrian, when did you start playing guitar and who was your influences? Have you ever been in any bands? This is easily the best channel on KZread for learning guitar, thanks
Super tone, sounds awesome!
TASTY!! TASTY!! Stuff Adrian !!!!!
I like Ron like I like The Ramones. It inspires us who don't have our 10, 000 hours in with guitar, that with 500-1000 hours total playing time with the guitar, we can make some damn good rock music too! :). Hence I get encouraged to trudge along rather than discouraged that I can never get there!
You got me at first measure “TV Eye” 🙌🏼
That's why i fuckin love this channel.
sounds great!!!!
kill city- yeah i know it was Williamson- Is my favorite song for this kind of sound-but i love what you've done here! as usual! (I hope iggy never sees this or you won't be home for a long time!)
Well that sounds fockin badass.
Any Asheton top 5 Should include the "1970" riff.

Yeah it’s the second one.
Ron Asheton is one of the greatest ... an Hard Rock way of riffing but brought so essential end penetrating that came to be an example (with Mick Ronson) for the early Punk. I think he used a Mosrite Fuzz instead of a Fuzz Face in JH Style. I think that for the Funhouse LP he used a Stratocaster, because the videos of the concerts and the sound of the LP put in this direction.
Gran tono, Adrian, eres un capo
You have great taste . Thanks
You are great Adrian
many many thanks !
Superb... (again!)
did more than "pretty close", this is the Stooges, well done!
Your LP is at the optimum position/strap length for you ,meaning weight distribution, personally ( cos it's different for everyone, of course)-to make the strong, finger vibratos go on forever, if you choose.A joy to behold !
Great vid
Excellent....I've been playing I wanna be your dog slightly wrong.. Cheers ..
I think it was a Maestro Fuzz or Tonebender Mk1 on the first album and a Vox Super Beatle amp. He switched to a Fuzzface later on in his 'career' and used Marshall amps live.
I Need Somebody. Great riff.
Ace as usual, yet still waiting for "Sense Of Purpose" by The Sound
Your tone kicks ass
Badass... no other words required
I like the guitar strap. Very nice.
Wow standing and groovy Adrian during the playthrough. I like it, I like it alot. (Creepy comment, much?)
