Friday I'm in Love - The Cure. Nice single note line which is just played on a D chord and easy but interesting strum pattern. There is a Bm in there which is a barre chord obviously, but can be fluffed and just played as an upper triad.

I couple I liked when starting out were "Animal Instinct" by the Cranberries and "Find the river" by REM. They have some Cadd9 and Dsus chords but I think that still counts as beginner friendly. Maybe only small-a "alternative" though :)

Yes, good songs. Pretty sure that they could qualify as alternative!
Note to the beginners: Don’t learn the “common beginner songs” only learn songs you like It’ll help a lot:)

That's funny because most of the things I want to learn are way out of my reach. It's always either the intro or the riff that makes you think oh okay I can do this but then the verse and bridge drops and youre dead.

Thats what I've always done i fucking hate stereotypical song books, music is about expression and creativity so what purpose does it serve to us doing the same shit as everyone else. I taught myself

I learnt wonderwall, a song i hate, but really did learn some sweet strumming patterns learning it. I don’t think it’s always true to just learn what you want :)

I find this true. Learn the songs you like because you’ll know them. You’ll be able to express yourself through your interpretation. Once you’re confident enough you’ll surprise yourself as to how fast you can pick up “common beginner songs”
@deaddoll1361

@@falcodarkzz I think the rational is if you really like a song, you'll practice it to death, whereas learning one you dislike is hard work, regardless of how "good it'll be for you". Keep in mind that the majority of people who start learning an instrument give up fairly quickly.

Advice to anyone out there: learn how to play Nirvana's first album: Bleach! Its a great sounding, fun to play record but very basic at times so its very beginner friendly. I personally feel like this album helped kickstart my passion for guitar playing!

Merrilyn Tattersall a barre chord is when your index finger holds down every string on a fret, is if it were a capo. So on an F, your index finger holds down all the strings on the first fret.
Every beginner's electric guitar kit should come with a fuzz pedal.

Buying a Boss DS-1 or a cheap EHX pedal and dialing it in definetly helps with getting a decent sound out of a cheap setup. Learning how to use the amps EQ also helps!
The bad news is: I'm 51 next week and only just got a guitar and started trying to play for the first time (with any serious intent); the good news is: I've found this channel! A completely cool and non-boring selection with clear and knowledgeable presentation and no BS. Thanks so much, awesome stuff. Some Brian Jonestown Massacre would be the icing on the cake!

What a fabulous list of truly iconic songs of the alternative variety!! My first comment was made before I heard the whole list but when you stood up to usher in some feedback- awesome!!
Again I say ..best guitar teacher on youtube....thanks for your hard work and time you put in to teach us.
The songs I’d say that are great beginner songs and which I learned was 1. Californication by red hot chilli peppers (without the crazy barrechord stuff) 2. Hurt by Johnny cash 3. Nothing else matters by Metallica 4. Fake plastic trees by Radiohead 5. boulevard of broken dreams by green day 6. Whole lotta love by led zeppelin 8. Nutshell by Alice in chains 9. Rooster by Alice in chains (one of the best songs to practice barre chords) 10. Lose yourself by Eminem 11. In bloom by nirvana 12. Come as you are by nirvana 13. Civil war by guns n’ roses (great for learning alternate picking) 14. Killing in the name of by rage against the machine 15. Chop suey! By system of a down. I hope I could’ve helped a beginner out there, Keep being epic my dudes.

I have a pal learning as the moment after the untimely death of his beloved wife. He's running a gamut of emotions really, but your song choices are inspired. I will send this to him in the hope it inspires as much as it did me. You're a beautiful man and a beautiful spirit.
Great list and quick instruction. My greatest tangible growth as a player was learning "Rumble" and that descending scale. Also: that jazzmaster is beautiful.
Thank you for this list! +1,000,000 points for The Cramps and The Stooges! Would love to see a detailed video on the ones you haven't done yet! Thank you for being an awesome human being and making me a better guitar player!
Súper extra points for adding Guided by Voices!!! You have my absolute respect mate!
Most of the comments are from 3 and 4 years ago, saw one from 1 year ago, so hopefully this comment gets through. Thank you for the video, I am definitely a beginner even though I bought my first guitar more than 30 years ago. I took a couple of lessons, really only learned what you just showed here, power chords. Then I practiced lead on my own for a few months, and unfortunately, life happened and I never kept up with playing. So, after all of these years, I'm ready to start playing again. I feel this video will definitely help me get going, as it shows three or four chords, and the strumming used as you move between them. I am mainly looking to get good at rhythm first, really learn the chord shapes and moving between them.
A man after my own heart with what constitutes a beginners song - great! No F, Barre and no speed! Well done
Awesome song choices. You are by far my favorite KZread guitar teacher. You have the coolest taste in music. Keep the great songs rolling.

Such a brilliant idea. I wish there had been something like this when I was starting. Apart from anything I would have learned about a lot of great bands that took me years to discover.
I’ve been at it for almost 25 years and still liked this video. Great choices!👍
These are some pretty cool songs I've learned as a beginner: •Bad Moon Rising by CCR •Boulevard Of Broken Dreams by Green Day •Zombie by The Cranberries •A Horse With No Name by America •Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen •Free Fallin by Tom Petty •Wonderwall by Oasis •Island In The Sun by Weezer •Hurt by Nine Inch Nails •Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones

Swam - much better selection of songs than the hipster selection this guy gave ( wonderwall is a great song , just because it's overplayed doesn't change the fact it sold more than any of his choice picks ) His taste has a lot to be desired .
I seem to have a lot of friends with kids learning to play the guitar right now and I always send them a link to this video. Fun choices, with good pedagogy. Really helpful!
Thou art brilliant. I was smiling from the first to the last second of this video. If anybody had told me thirty years ago that this is possible ... people who are (in a way) like me, on some kind of telly, teaching me stuff that I like, whenever I want to.
I jumped straight into bar chords with and they're a nightmare. Its very sweet of this guy to of made this video
Wow, thank you SO MUCH for turning me on to these great songs I have never heard of (except walk on the wild side). As a beginner I've been avoiding open mic nights because I was embarrassed to stand up and play the tired old beginner standards. Now I've got a good reason to stand up and introduce the audience to new tunes, even with my limited skills. Thank you again -- I've subscribed!
A really good beginner song for someone who is new to power chords is The Hardest Button to Button by the White Stripes. I remember learning it in the first month or two of playing guitar.
First time I’ve seen your videos and just wanted to tell you what a wonderful time I had watching you doing it. I hope I can reach a decent level one day soon. From Texas, thanks a lot Adrian !
Yes! Iggy, Cramps, Link Wray,... inspiring alternative songs I really love for a beginner like me. Thank you!
Totally cool collection of tunes. Especially liked the inclusion of Lou Reed. Well done.
Thank you very much!!! I learned Sunday morning with your video like 4 years ago!! I´m so glad you still share this kind of music. Lou Reed is somethig I really didn´t appreciate so much untill I started playing the guitar, I love how he could make beautifull music with simple stuff.
Love your video themes/ideas and song picks, they're fresh and original
Love your guitar collection matey, I've got a left handed Jazzmaster on order, can't wait for it to arrive. I've just started giving a friend guitar lessons and he's an absolute beginner. These songs will be perfect for teaching him the basic chords in the context of some great tunes.
Dude!!!! when you played the Stooges at the end... deadly!! Ive only been playing for about 7 months. Up to this point, KZread and self-taught. This is the first time Ive watched one of your videos. I really enjoyed and am practicing what you showed, hehe. subscribed
I love that the I Wanna Be Your Dog lesson has the feedback.
Not even kidding. Immediately liked and subscribed as soon as Eels were mentioned. My favourite band ❤️
As always enjoyed this presentation, thank you Adrian. 👏🏻

I actually love the songs you chose, PROPS TO YOU MAN. Also, your video on Feel The Pain helped me a lot cause I was struggling with that solo, keep it up man.
This is one hell of a list, excellent band/song choices
Great voice, excellent lesson. Thank you for a refreshing beginners lesson. Mighty fine sounding/looking guitar.
I've been playing less that a week and I figured out the beat happening's Indian summer. Thanks for the GBV
Excellent stuff! GBV & Stooges, superb & good to hear someone play I Wanna Be Your Dog properly. Stiff Little Fingers, another alt/indie/punk band based very much around open chords. They taught me how to play. Alternative Ulster is an excellent example, but it does have a B minor in it (not necessarily a barre chord). Keep up the good work!!!
Your videos are very pleasant and understandibly clear. I'm glad I saw this one! Thank you.
These are great. Thanks for putting this together.
Great list. Cramps, Link Wray, Stooges, Lou Reed....happy to be here.
Thank you for this list! It's quite hard to find beginner songs which are not oversimplified and still sound good.

Happy to see your video on alternative rock...nicely done! Thanks for sharing.
Really liking your refreshing different take on beginner songs. It would be great to have a dedicated video on how to play I Wanna Be Your Dog. Thank you.
my favorite guitar channel! thanks great lesson
This was a GREAT list of songs! well done!
I’m glad you chucked in BEG at the end .. what a classic !
Exactly my taste, feel like this list was made just for me, thanks so much! :)
Quality! Thank you, Adrian - great stuff
Excellent list! I’m a total beginner and have been working though “Human Fly” and “Rumble” which happen to be some my of my all time favorites regardless of their beginner status. Now I’m very inspired to learn “I wanna be your dog”. On another note, I would love I eventually see a tutorial for “Head On” by Jesus and Mary Chain. Can’t seem to find a good lesson for that one on KZread and it sounds very fun to play (once I develop a little more dexterity with beginner songs). Hope you’re staying well and thanks for sharing your musical talents!

You are going to have to learn the F chord It shows up in a lot of songs
That's a great, easy to play and easy to learn beginner's list. We can get into the nuances of different ways to play chords (barred), major 6s, minors, 7ths and sus's later. For a beginner, with a few simple chords - it's just the way it is (i.e. don't worry about why, it's just the way it is. We can get into the why later).
What a great tutorial, thanks really enjoyed, that song from 'Lock Stock' is amazing!
Gereat, great, great selection of songs. Kudos! I' going to play Human fly all of the day now
The Dandy Warhols! Love your taste in music Adrian. My fav guitar channel now! This and Sonic Youth on another vid...you've got me! I'm not a beginner by a long stretch but I really enjoy your videos and the song selection, I mean Link Wray!?!! Alright!! Keep up the great work! Cheers from Louisiana 🤘🎸
Love this. Cool , understated songs . Thankyou x

Why do I get the impression this video could have been six hours long? I could have watched just to see where your mind goes next. NICE LIST!
i've been playing guitar for a few years now and i've never tried 'I WANNA BE YOUR DOG' even though I absolutely love The Stooges and Iggy Pop (his Post Pop Depression concert is one of my favourites ever). WHAT A POWER! Thank you Adrian

I love this, so motivating!! Thank you :)
Grateful to find this channel finally someone who has good.taste
As a low intermediate guitarist (really a singer but forced to play rhythm guitar in my new band!) I really appreciate these choices. You also have extraordinarily good taste!
Great list. I think "Redemption song" is another easy to play beginner song. You should listen an indie band from Argentina, it's called "El mato a un policía motorizado" and the song is "Amigo piedra", really great and easy song.
SO GREAT! thanks for all you do!
I love your channel, thanks for everything
Lovely tunes ! You make it look so easy !
A little late to the party, (just subscribed today), after watching another one of your vids. To come to this one, and find that our dearly missed Mr. Reed is song #1 - wow!

Thank you for introducing me to Eels. Fantastic.

Great video man. Definitely gonna try some this stuff with my fender jag gonna get next week first electric guitar!

This guy is so spot-on, I'm just giving it a thumbs up and I'm 1 minute in...
Hell yeah man, thanks for the list! Gonna learn stooges tonight! I enjoy your points about lame beginner songs out there. I got tired of people trying to teach me hotel California, ended up learning 3 chord social distortion songs instead. This video has given me some inspiration as I haven't played in While.
Great choice of songs.
I'm glad I sat through the first 9! 10 is worth it!
