Thank you very much. I've had every problem with my van that you mentioned. Now for tightening up the shifter gear on the steering wheel, I found that there are two screws that you can tighten up without taking the steering wheel apart. ( I had a 2002 Ford E-350) And I found that if you follow the brake pedal all the way up the steering shaft you will see two screws (You will need a 5.6 socket) you may need to tighten them and that should straighten out the problem. Or you can remove them and use " lock-tight." And that should stop it from happening again.

My mechanic who was great with beater cars doesn't have the staff to have my back as before and it is on me to get educated. I just replaced air filter which was a little tricky due to the design of the truck. As a very old(almost 80) gear head from the 60s, I got a kick out of your video. I drive an '02' E250, 3/4 ton extended van. I'm only the second owner/driver. Purchased it from the co. I worked for Jan. 2008. It was 6 yrs. old when I bought it. But, being a service vehicle, it had 153 thous. miles on it. It now has 333,000 miles on it.Been driven 4 times across country to Cal. and back to SW Fl. Plus many other long distance places. Oh. It has the orig. untouched(other than normal TLC) 5.4, 2 valve engine. And, orig. trans.. BTW, I still do my own oil/filter changes and trans filter changes. Biggest problem that I ever had, was that damn idle motor thingy on the back of the eng. I did an old school modification to the steel gas pedal. Pulled the wiring off of it. Installed my own idle adjustment screw. Been set up like this since Oct. 2013. So, it must be working OK. Set my idle to 550-600 RPMs. This old truck runs just fine. yea, chk, eng. soon light on all the time. But, I know why its on! Sorry for the long post.

Oh yeah, one more bonus, overdrive button short circuits in the shift selector. The positive lead wears thin and arcs out to ground, blowing the O.D indicator fuse. DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE TWIN-I-BEAM SUSPENSION. But any way, good job so far.

I've been in the skilled trades all my life and own a small business. All of my vehicles were econoline at a certain point because as a finish carpenter no vehicle has fit my needs more. That being said I've had each one of these issues and a few that I've found more common and GUARANTEED in certain years like power steering pump squealing like a hurt mermaid in a microphone, some serviceman damaging the plug thread where out of frikken nowhere the plug pops and your smooth running van sounds like a idling poorly tuned indy car but worse. Automatic doorlock/handle issues ESPECIALLY the rear door!, the accursed front suspension is a sure bet and at some point and won't stop until it's all fixed, gas tank leak gets honorable mention especially if you're in the North.

I love my 2005 e250 with the new front end kit. Costs more to keep replacing tires. Cleaned out the MAF and that 4.6 got a lot more torque and better mileage. Had a hose reel on my rear door was too heavy. The hinges can’t take it.

  • @vikingrobot4179

I have a 2007 E250. My from ball joint were worn so I replaced them. I plan on rebuilding the entire front end including radius arm bushings. I also have some sway and noticed my body to frame mounts in the rear portions are totally gone. This in conjunction with worn steering parts is most likely causing my front tires to chop and wear badly on the inside edges. My a/c and heat would quit working when applying throttle but at a stop O was fine. There is a quick and easy fix hack by finding the proper vacuum line under the hood and rerouting it under the pass side dash along with a check valve and a new vacuum canister ti fix it without removing the heater box -you don’t wanna go there. The fix takes about an hour or so but most guys brag they did theirs in a half hour….doubtful….lol. I dropped my trans pan to change the fluid and filter and noticed a yellow plastic ball floating in the pan….discard this as it’s a assembly only dust cap that pops out once the diptstick is inserted and it just floats harmlessly in the pan. I went nuts trying to figure out where it came from and scoured the web to finally get my answer….pissed me off. My parking brake dash indicator doesent light up with parking brake applied but the lights briefly flashes on along with all the other warning lights upon start up position2 with key as they always do. I think my P brake switch is bad. My tow/haul button on shifter no longer works and I have a check engine light along with a torque converter lock up code. The van runs like a beast but the trans does make a whiny noises and sometimes will slip and rev up every once in a blue moon between gears usually at slower speeds between 1’st and 2’nd gear. I have the 4.6 L motor and was thinking about changing my rubber oil cooler hoses from the oil filter housing. I have 240,000 miles. I had a couple bad coil packs and I’ve changed my plugs and could twice so far. I keep extra coil packs and a serpentine belt just in case. I upgraded to LED plug and play headlights which made a world of difference. It’s a work van and I carry a lot of equipment and tools for a mobile mechanic service but this van has been so reliable I’ve taken it from Ga to Fla twice and Ga to Pa 4X and would take it tomorrow I’m so confident of it’s reliability. What a great product Ford made with this van. One of the last good old vehicles that isn’t mired in bells and whistles, redundant control modules and creature comfort features. I keep looking at newer trucks and vans and just can’t bring myself to 1. Afford the ridiculously overpriced, over engineered junk and 2. they’re just too damned pretty and over gadgeted for a work vehicle. My friend had his 2006 F250 crew cab , Diesel, long bed, 4wd truck stolen so two days later he bought a used 2019 F350, same style king ranch and he absolutely hates it. It’s too nice, too many chimes and electronics….it’s just too rich for a damned work truck and way too many things to break. He hates the ridiculous add blue system and literally wants to drive the truck off a cliff because of all the problems it has due to over engineered BS.

Besides a transmission leak (thank god) you just nailed EVERY problem I've had with my 2008 E150. DAMN, you're good. That misfire, wow, that was an expensive nightmare and it was the coil pack but combined with a security problem which linked to and instrument cluster. In the end, it was (mostly) just the coil. Now I have door latch problems and a vibration like an improperly balanced tire - but I just had them balanced. Only happens between 99-103 kms/hr. Weird.

Amazing.......I retired a 1994 with 330K, and the engine was tired out, was on a 1 ton cube van. Van replacement was a 1992 1 ton cube van and at 127K the engine was shot, it had a bad life before I got it at 108K. Used the '94 roller cam engine for the core, and R&R the '92 with a roller cam engine, it's at about 154K now, and not used as much as I got a smaller '05 1 ton for work. Guess Ford got wise to this and stopped making the 5.0's and 5.8's and that style of van, cause that lasted too long.......sales went down.

9:40 I had the shifter issue. I almost got stranded because the shifter didn't want to go into gear. It turned out that the shifting linkage bolts had gotten extremely loose. I had to take off the trim pieces to get access to it under the steering column but once I tightened them up the shifter began to work like new.

There were millions of these made so there are TONS of parts and they are cheap to fix.The same basic design hasn't changed since 1992, so a lot of parts are interchangeable and they use proven engines. They are incredibly reliable, especially with the 300 I6 or 4.6 engines ( stay away from the triton engines....)The chassis is essentially unchanged from 1975's redesign of the econoline, so if you buy one of these new, underneath you're essentially driving a 46 year old vehicle, which is kind of sad, but also kind of cool.

@@BallsMcgrubber The spark plugs are a pain in the ass and have been known to blow out. They had a coil on plug design, which leads to a lot of heat on the coil. Also issues with the timing chain guides breaking off and ending up in the oil pan, and causing damage elsewhere because the timing is off, causing valvetrain damage. Stay away. Get the 4.2, 4.6, 300 I6, or if you're going older and don't mind a carb, a 302 or 460 will do just fine. They have much fewer issues.

All the Triton engines have a problem with exhaust manifold bolts: vans, trucks, SUVs. Now that these engines are older, I'd recommend checking the bolts over couple months or so. When and if you find one that has snapped, change ALL of them, because the rest aren't far behind.
