I have bought 3 caravans to date and usually trade them in around 60,000. I'm still driving my 2018 caravan with 250,000 KLM and seeing many issues. Transmission failed at 190,000 Klm and the oil manifold leaking oil at 245,000 KLM. The power door locks failed at 220,000 and now hearing ticking noise in the engine. But hard to believe the original brakes are still good. Great video!

Is another sign that your tipm is bad is that the vehicle will just shut down or won't crank. Do not make a mistake and replace the fuel pump or the alternator - it is the fuel pump relay and you can either wire a bypass or buy another rebuilt tipm. I learned this the hard way by replacing things that weren't broken.

The information that you've given me is that is exactly what I need seeing that I just recently purchased a 2008 Dodge Grand caravan sxt. With the information that you're providing me it's allowing me to actually understand and know the vehicle that I have. The more videos that you do on 2008 model will actually help me to fix any and all problems that I have currently and in the future. My heated seats switch doesn't work for either the front driver or front passenger side. It looks like I have a donut in the back middle section of the inside of the vehicle that looks like a table could go there which is odd. And I have that slippage a little bit in the transmission like you explained. So far so good, the more videos you put out the more information I received the better my vehicle will be running thank you very much you have a blessed day

As a previous owner of a 2012 I can surely attested to every single one of those problems popped up in my wonderful 3 years of ownership. The concept of this van is excellent. However, the amount of problems it had and the amount of dealership visits, and yes I did buy the “lifetime” warranty at the time was absolutely ridiculous. The dealership I used was so bad at customer service I drove out off their lot and right into a competitors lot and took a loss. Brakes, brakes and brakes, never ended. Transmission clunking to gear shifter getting stuck. Water problems in the door. Doors opening on their own in the parking lots. Air conditioning in the rear not working. Recall on rear vent windows, fix was to pull the plugs for a year until they had a “fix”. Dodge/Fiat whomever never again. They besides this van make great looking vehicles, maybe worth only leasing but not a long term investment. Good luck!

The fix for the premature brake wear is to upgrade from the original “single piston calliper” design to the “dual piston calliper” design. This upgrades the rotors from roughly 300MM all the way to 328MM. One stipulation is that you must have the 17” rims to accommodate the extra size of the callipers. To me, that’s well worth your money and sanity!

We’ve had more trouble with this ‘16 than the other two put together.American car manufacturers never learn. They went through a period when they ignored customer demand for smaller cars in the 70-80s, and everyone bought foreign cars as a result. Then they sold cars that rusted out in 5-6 years. Now they are cutting corners, putting out under built cars. We’ve had 3 Caravans. The next vehicle will be an import. It’s nice to support local, but they have to put out a decent car.

    1. The breakes were updated in 2015 to the "heavy duty" brakes, and 17 inch rims. Wear is a non-issue on these later models. 2. TIPM isnt an issue unless one drive in deep water, or carelessly hose down the engine. 3. The oil filter housing being plastic, is well known by oil change places by now, after 11 years. 4. Automatic doors is only an issue if you have them. They can also be manually shut, overriding the mechanism. 5. The retainer in the trans was updated around 2015. Basically these are solid vehicles with very few flaws, especially later models, 2015+

I have never read a post so true in my life. I have or am experiencing all of these with my 2008 dodge caravan. I've thought Midas was playing games since I find myself changing brakes twice a year. My headlights now do a delicate dance of off and on, my window will roll down at random and have had issues with both passenger doors. It's been hard shifting off and on.

Quick check before anything else on the power sliding door: open the flexible wire harness inside the track at the bottom of the door, and check the wires. It's very common for one or more of them to simply break from the constant flexing. This could especially be the case if your door first begins to operate intermittently, and then over a few weeks stops operating altogether. I found two broken wires in that harness - soldered and sealed them, and the door's been working ever since.

Never had an issue on my 2012, maybe I got lucky or traded it in before it got too old. Currently downgraded to a 2008 (needed a wheelchair conversion van for my mother, and it was already converted). This one has manual sliding side doors which I prefer anyways. I had a friend with the previous body style 2007 and he had issues with the sliding side doors, can't remember if it was both sides or just one. But, now he has a Dodge Journey, so all doors are conventional hinged doors.

Great video! If I could add a sixth - often the actuator for the rear heat/AC goes bad, resulting in one or the other stuck. In other words, you may have the A/C blowing cold up front, but when it is set to cold in the back all that comes out is heat! (This can happen for Passenger/Driver zones as well) The problem is an actuator that is small and easy to replace (inexpensive, too!) I've had both the rear and passenger actuator go out on mine. Quick and easy fix

We have owned our 08 SXT with a 3.8 since 2011. It’s always shifted hard from a stop but once going it’s smooth. The suspension is a little clunky especially compared to my BIL’s 2012 Chrysler. We’ve replaced a lot of stuff over the years and it does annoy me at times but it’s paid off and at 174,000 and will be our oldest first car.

I drive a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan and the first problem you mentioned about brakes confounded me. We bought it new about ten years ago now and it has 165,000 miles, and the brakes have never had to have been replaced. Last year I was sure it had been long enough but after bringing it to a mechanic to change the brakes he said they had only worn down halfway and that I theoretically could keep driving it for as many miles as I've had the brakes . . . which, at the time was 155,000 miles. I've never known any other vehicles to have brakes last as long. Edit: the only serious problem it has had is the flex plate has cracked, twice. The first time under warranty, the replacement around 140,000 miles. That should never happen.

Worked for a company that maintained a fleet of about 50 2011-2019 Grand Caravans (they rotated them out after about 230-250k miles). We did a lot of trans cooler lines, they develop leaks over time. Rear shocks start to rattle after about 100k. The front outer marker lamp bulbs burn out quite often, and they kinda suck to change. I would say the biggest issue we had was rocker arms going bad. The 3.6 Pentastar will develop a ticking sound, and it typically is the rocker arms going bad. My personal van that I bought from the company with 210k on it had a tick from long before I bought it. When I pulled it apart to replace the rockers it had worn 1 intake cam lobe each on cylinders 1 and 3 completely flat from the rocker roller locking up and grinding away. Van never felt down on power and never had a misfire or CEL. I ended up replacing the engine rather than pull it apart to put cams in it. But if you catch it early (as soon as it starts ticking) you can replace the bad rocker arms and save the engine.

We have 2005 Grand Caravan 3.3l Standard fuel injection. We bought it flood damaged. Yes! The TIPM would mess up the door locks. Pull the fuse and wait a minute, reinsert the fuse and they would work again. We have owned it for five years, from 160,000 to 270,000 miles. Tune up. Water pump. Belts and hoses. Radiator replace. Engine is worn but still runs smoothly. Transmission shifts perfectly. Just replaced starter. This is my all-time favorite vehicle to own and drive. Would love to resto-mod it but no time left to do that. Love my Caravan!

Brakes are not undersized, there was a design issue with the calipers, that causes the pad to be slightly stuck, so they create friction and heat even when no break is being applied. Measure the temperature of the rims after a long ride on the highway, they will be super hot even though you barley applied the breaks. Take the caliber bracket down and have a close look, you will see that it doesn't slide out properly. You can fix that with some hand-tools and a working brain, or get some QUALITY, name brand aftermarket calipers. Most of the harsh shifting between reverse and first gear, and stutter leaving in first gear, comes from the Eco driving mode. The engine / trans map is badly designed. Turn the Eco mode off.

I've put almost 300K km's on a 2013 and the oil filter housing is the only issue I've had. I can't help but think that the people going through brake pads so frequently have the basic single piston front brakes. There was a dual piston option, I've only had to replace pads every 3yrs or so. I think the transmission thing is blown out of proportion, as long as you don't consider it "lifetime fluid" you're fine.

Had TCM module issues, was kinda neat to be able to fix it by twisting the pins juuuust a little bit. Had wheel bearing failure premature. Also rattling exhaust issues (between the flexpipe and the muffler), poor aging on the AC system too.

I would definitely recommend the BR3 brake option for your 08-20 Grand Caravan! This upgrade gives you dual-piston front calipers and 1" larger front rotors plus the rear brakes are larger as well. Excellent stopping power and no brake life issues. Please remember that these are NOT lightweight vehicles...my fully optioned 15 Crew Plus weighs 4900lbs with 1/4 tank of gas!!

Bought a 17 GT model for my wife. We love the performance, room, storage flexibility and comfort of this vehicle. It's like a sports car with the capacity of a van. Why do they have a plastic oil filter housing? I perform maintenance on all our vehicles and this is the only one I have issues with. Placement of the o-ring on the filter housing is critical. I mistakenly installed it too high on the cap before a long trip causing a leak. Luckily we run full synthetic oil in all our vehicles. Could have been a much larger issue. Would love to see an upgraded metal housing or an upgraded modification to accept a traditional screw on oil filter.

If fuses, where is it and what number for this van? Lastly can the transmission relay fuse I see in the TIPM cause symptoms of a blown transmission if its bad? Thanks for the heads up! Especially on the brake pads. I just brought a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with 101,000 miles on it about a few weeks ago and so far so good. I put about 1,500 miles on it and no problems. People put these rides down but I've been a MOPAR fan since the '70's and owned a few over the years. Never had any major problems with any of them. Chevy's, Plymouths and Dodge most of my misspent youth. Started driving Lincolns and Fords in my 40's.Towncars and Crown Vics. All good cars, Recently had a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica for about a year, fun to drive, blew the engine. Shy away from Chrysler. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for these trouble spots on this years ride and if I need anyting I'll be sure to look you up!

Hello, I'm a taxi driver / maintenance manager up in Ontario Canada.. We have 2 of these vans, a 2012 and 2013 . The 12 definitely had break issues, but the 13 seems to have a much beefier break set up requiring 17 inch rims as opposed to the 16 inch on the 2012. We have had transmission issues where the bands seem to of deteriorated to the point they plug up the filter, starving it of oil pressure, rendering the van immobile. Both our vans run remanufactured transmissions built spasificaly for fleat vehicles. We also had issues with the rear trailing arm bushings failing... having to replace them every few months... i'm almost considering having a machine shop to make me some sort of solid bushing as the shop cost of replacing is adding up....

2012 T&C van 160 ,000 miles. At about 140xxx It would crank and not start at random. I noticed the fuel pump wasn't coming on all the time. The fuel pump relay circuit on the TIPM was bad. This is so common (apparently) that I found a company that makes a fix for it and it's almost plug and play. My wife installed it while i was at work. I drove it to California and back (4900 miles) up mountains and though the desert without issue.

I have a 2018 and can confirm these issues based on my experience, or on experience from other owners in the online car groups. I had to replace the lock actuator on the passenger side. It was cheap. Took 3 hours because I had to figure it out and it was hard to get to. If I had to do it again, I could do it in half the time. It was still under warranty, but it would've been more of a hassle making an appointment and waiting. Also, I don't like people working on my cars. Second, the TIPM. Heard of this issue. Also, twice in 3 years my lights and wipers went crazy for a minute. Fuse box gets super hot. Electrical materials used by manufacturer are garbage and melt. Fuel pump relay is common, but I haven't experienced it yet. But my drivers side blinker socket melted a bit. That shouldn't happen. Oil filter housing I'm careful with. It's plastic, and plastic gets weak and brittle over time. I should buy a backup for when mine breaks. Brakes, I haven't had an issue with. Purchased in 2019 with 36k, and am at 70k now. Not a big deal. Brakes are easy to do. I'm very interested in the part name mentioned about the transmission. I havent had issues yet, but I like to do my research before I need to do a job. I changed the fluid and filter at 40k miles. Theres no drain plug or dipstick, so they don't want you to do it yourself. But there's a trick to be able to use your oil dipstick. I'm going to change it again in a month or two. They say every 60k miles, but I do it every 30k miles. It wasn't hard to do, but having a drain plug would've helped. Also, never use eco mode. One thing that should have been mentioned is the rocker issue. I havent had that problem yet, but look it up. Starts with a loud tick. If you stay on top of it and fix it when the symptoms start, it will be easier. All of that being said, after 3 years of ownership, these aren't that bad. Every vehicle has their weak points. I am not a chrysler fan at all. I have low expectations. It was just cheaper than the competition, so what do you expect?

This explains the brakes on my 2013!! My husband has replaced them a few times already and it's driving him crazy! I've also had issues with lights either not working (trunk light, had to replace) or at one point the interior lights were staying on and I had to manually turn them off each time! Then one day they just started turning off on their own again! My van also doesn't shift well (she hates 3rd gear), which kinda scares me now! 😳 I do love my van, as I can fit my 3 kids, their stuff and the kitchen sink in it, but I also don't have any extra money for repairs! Lol Cross your fingers and say a prayer for me! 🤣

If u haven't bought it yet, PLEASE save yourself tons of $ in the long run, frustration, dangerous situations, & wasted time with break downs, towing, repairs, etc..., & just get an Odyssey or Sienna instead, if at all possible! I made a long comment about what's happened with mine, since I bought it, & the 2 years since having it, if you're interested in reading about it. Nowhere near all the problems, but just the tip of the iceberg, & a few of the major ones I've had, since driving it home from the lot. Whatever you decide to do, best of luck to you! But in my experience, I've owned Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, & Chrysler T& C (same as Dodge Caravan). My mechanic warned me when I was shopping for a new one, NOT to get the Chrysler/ Dodge, but my ex ignored his advice & would ONLY buy the Chrysler, or nothing, & I've regretted his purchase every single day since. The Sienna & Odyssey each had 200,000 +, & over 300,00, when we sold the Sienna it was still running, & we still use the 2006 Odyssey, that we've owned since 2007 (bought it with 12,000 miles on it)- @ 315,000, it drives WAY better, & is more reliable than my Chrysler 😔 The other vans felt safe, like heavy duty, & would fare well in an accident. The Chrysler feels like a disposable car, cheaply made, that falls apart at little bumps in the road, & it scares me to think of what would happen, if we ever get hit. It's also way more crowded feeling, with the same amount of passengers, than the other vans.

I have an 08 Grand Caravan. Havnt had a single one of these issues. Had the van since 2012. I've changed brakes twice, radiator twice, rack & pinion input shift seal, and power steering return hose.

As an owner of a 2011 Grand Caravan I say you pretty much nailed all of them. Nobody should be scared off if these vehicles though! From a overall standpoint, the Grand Caravan of this vintage is an Excellent ride. The 3.6 under the hood is a torque monster that is a beast. I highly recommend these vehicles. Great job A1 auto!

I preferred the 4.0L in my Chrysler Town and Country to the 3.6L. More torque and more bhp. I am sorry it wasn't offered in my 2018 Caravan GT because it was far better.

I have people say really good things about these vehicles. That's why I want to purchase 1 to be a fulltime Nomad.

Have a 2015 . Use it for work. Tools and materials. 240000 km so far. No major issues. Have a rocker noise issue at the moment. Changed the rear brakes and rotors at about 200000km and the front at 225 000km.
