I've been wearing a full face helmet for most of my biking life but I only ride my classic Honda now, I'm no longer a dressed up Power Ranger so early last year I bought a retro styled DMD open face helmet and added a lightly smoked transparent peak, the difference is amazing, it doesn't make me feel claustrophobic, it's so light, I can breath better and see a lot more, yes it does make me feel more in control, alive and cool, I also add to this a pair of safety glasses when riding, some open face examples do look like mushrooms so just choose the right one, DMD versions are small and light, I will not go back to wearing my Aria full face helmet ever again for the type of riding I do now.

The only time I crashed I had deep scratches in the front of my full face helmet. Now I wear a 180 system helmet, open at low speeds, close at higher speed. Best of both worlds.

Bell 500 or DMD for me is only for the short slow spin to the shops when its roasting out, Bell is very comfy for my head shape (Arai oval) - awful difficult experience with Hedon (direct, not Urban Rider) and even when I got to hold my new Hedon helmet it was not worth the massive cost , the quality was not that much better than any of my Bells, it's no Arai luxury in case you think it is, sent it back as it started falling apart after 3-4 wears around the house. Just buy a Bell Bullitt and leave the visor open to get the best of both worlds 🙂

There is indeed one aspect where open face helmets increase your safety and it is often forotten; Since summer temperatures on south easy go above 35C during day, full face helmets may cause weakness, claustrophobia, feeling of lack of air, actual lack of awareness, and panick attacks, to some, or many riders, when weared in slow city drive. Therefore I preffer open face helmet in slow city ride. It is probably more safety due to increased driver's awareness. Do not reccommend open helmets for open road drive. Probably unbearable and dangerous summer heats are not issue in UK, however on Meditterranean are.

Open face is indeed fine for bobbing around town and slow speeds and even preferable in hot days BUT please use full face or modular helmet when actually traveling and using highways.

Here’s a question that maybe you’ve never had. Is there a helmet, preferably open face, that will allow for the use of behind the ear hearing aids. My hearing loss is to advance to wear the ones that fit inside the ear canal, so I’m left with trying to find something that won’t crush the hearing aids between my ear and my skull. The hearing aids also tend to come off with the helmet, and they are way too expensive to have them flying away and getting lost. Thank you in advance.

Hi Keith! It is true, we never had such a question before and it's tricky. What I could suggest if you are based in UK mainland to order one of those and try it at home to see if it will work well with a hearing aid as sadly it's not something we can check ourselves. Our apologies. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us at: info@urbanrider.co.uk - Iza

@@UrbanRiderlondon Thank you for the reply. Actually I’m in the states and I am wondering if something like the bell scout air might work since it doesn’t come down quite so far on the sides. Probably not the best protection, but losing expensive hearing aids isn’t really an option.

Agreed!! 3/4 helmet?? Yes, when going at higher speeds or longer rides. 1/2 helmet (shorty) all other rides; particularly in the summer when the 3/4 is overruled even for longer and faster rides. Times when a full face helmet should be worn? Never! Unless you're embarking for Mars inside a rocket, because that's what you full face helmeted guys all look like... So, rethink the whole philosophy -- get your face in the freakin' world. If that's too much and the danger is a concern, well, that's absolutely no problem - just take the car. Or better yet, stay home because that's safer still. Except for when you have to get on a foot-stool to change out a lightbulb in the kitchen ceiling, then put a helmet and other safety gear on. Just hang with this and listen to the profound words spoken by Max Schaaf: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4VsxpuFl9epqsY.html From southern California ~ Ride Forever!

Open face helmets are a terrible idea for too many reasons: * Bugs, rain and dirt in the face * Sunburn from the sun or cold from the wind * No eye protection, so need to wear dark + clear glasses for night time (or at least clear for all day wear) * No chin/face protection in the event of a crash ..they sure look cool, but I'd rather wear my full face helmet any day.

They work great for riding around town. Smaller, lighter and more ventilation/open feel for those scorching hot days. Plus generally more affordable so people love them for customization with paint jobs and decals. For touring though, definitely full-face always
